    There's plenty of incurable diseases on earth today, and bacteria transfer over from the strangest places. Even with the rich life Earth has, we still haven't seen any all-conquering all-devouring super-micro-organism-to-destroy-anything here yet. Why would they exist on Mars?

    A: I know they're referring to a specific event. The reasoning still applies. B: The only difference between a theory and hypothesis is one of scope, which really doesn't make much difference; neither can be proven.

    For those who of you claiming they met their responsibilities and that the Indian government was somehow to blame here's some food for thought:
    An enquiry towards the official position on their stance on the whole debacle received this response (translated by me, reads pretty much the same in norwegian):

    Union Carbide have nothing but the highest respect and compassion for the populace of Bhopal, however Union Carbide have no interesents - nor any responsibility for - the Bhopal-facilities.

    I think the clear discintion you're making is here invalid. Along the same notes;

    "Gravity to blame for stuff falling down" != "Gravity can be blamed for stuff falling down"
    How many people don't believe in gravity?

    Its per definition impossible to prove a theory, as you will never ever know if a second theory will provide the same results.

    In the end it aøø comes down to a matter of 'when do you have enough evidence to claim its true' and clinging to the 'its not been defitivly proven yet'-defence is just a straw-man, as it never can proven (in the end, one may claim god did it, and mankind didn't affect it.. as far as theory goes, how can you debunk a statement like that?)

    More likely, they just don't have the manpower to hunt down the thoughtcriminals just yet.

    Well..then you already have decided they're evil.

    More likely, I think its a matter of scale. The generaly populace will complain if stuff gets cracked down too hard on.

    'The Party' which rules China is made up of chinese. There are no(few) cultural/race/clan differences to justify how 'the others' are evil and should be prosecuted. They simple won't get the consesus needed to go after people too harshly.

    As sidenote, I frankly wonder if there is a larger difference between the general populaces opinions on politics and what the politicians actually do in the western world than in China (see European support for Iraq war for example).

You're discussing wether 'Department of Education' should know which students go to which college for christ sake! And the general consesus is that it breaks your privacy!?

    As far as I've understood from my chinese friends, they couldn't care less what you read/think for yourself. As long as you it keep it for yourself, or to your inner circle of friends nobody cares. It's public agitating that will get you in trouble.

    Only truly unobtrusive client I've seen. Default behaviour for when you get a message is to change the taskbar icon.I heartily recommend it.. and its Open Source (for those who that matters to)

    but most people will choose IE, or complain if you hide IE, so they don't have the option.

    I've yet to hear a single dissatisfied non-techie complain about Opera :) .. Setup the mail client properly and they'll love you too.

    Even if AdBlock were responsible for preventing a user from getting a virus this time, that's hardly enough to make up for the theft of services and fraud that people who use it commit every day.

    You're a troll, but I'm biting even so.

    We are under no obligation to play by whatever crooked-up business model a company cooks up. Unless I sign/click an agreement to view the ads, they don't have a legal leg, nor a moral one for that matter, to stand on.

    They offer a web-page because they have something to say. I select how to view it. What more is there to it?

    I guess you're ok with printer cartridge prices too? After all, its 'their business model' and not following it would be 'theft of service and fraud'?

    What more than requiring employees to justify access before they get it, and signing NDA first can you reasonably demand?

    Do you want them to deny reasonable justified in-house requests for database access?

    It certainly cuts the core of the issue atleast. First you invade, then you legislate. However, whatever you do, its damn hard to change the fact that there are a damn lot of iraques in Iraq with a damn lot of weapons.

    When article mentions driving snowstorm, this does actually mean a driving snowstorm with lots of snow and cold and wind and more snow and everybody trying to stay inside?

    Or does it mean that it was fairly windy, snowing abit and it totalling a couple of centimeters on the ground and people who had watched to many catastroph-movies lately bandied about in Libraries burning books and being faintly surprised about how little warmth it produced?

    I have one machine with SP2 and one without. For some reason it made my network go crazy on my dell laptop with a 100% freshly newly installed newly updated Windows XP. Don't know wether to blame Dell or Microsoft though.

    Either way, I just want to respond to the points you make and how they don't have any relevance to me. As far as I'm concerned, SP2 hasn't anything thats really needed, and with the amount of people experiencing trouble with it I advise people to stay away.

    1. Firewall; there are plenty of ok free firewalls out there. Everyone who's bothered/competent at granting/denying permessions to various programs seem to be doing it already in my experience.

    2. Windows update: It was either enabled by default before, or rather easy to spot. Casebased proof of this is that my father enabled itself when he installed windows xp on his machine.

    3. IE-related feature: I give Opera actively to everybody I know. Everybody has loved it so far. (My little brother for the skinning and the looks, my father/his friends the simplicity, personally I love the excellent default behaviour (middle click to close a tab f.x.))

    4. IE-related feature: Read above.

    5. IP configuration GUI Improvements: that isn't new with SP2. Its right here on my laptop too.

    6. I don't use bluetooth (weak comeback yes :p)

    Here in Norway, its illegal for companies to make claims in commercials they can't back up even.

    Are you aware that Norwegian is not the root of all language? I believe it is heavily derived from Danish and Danish from German and German from Indo-European and so on .

    It wasn't a particurarly serious comment.. There's no need for ill informed posts about the roots of my own language :-)

    Partly due to Danish/Norwegian union, written Norwegian and Danish are largely similar. Nygård means New Farm, and is the modern (ie: post-viking) spelling of Nygard. This holds for both Danish and Norwegian. The name is a regular name in Norway, while a fairly uncommon in Denmark. Most likely his family was named Nygård and it was Americanized and mispronounced to Nygard.

    When was the last time you heard of any other country that disciplined its military people for war crimes? Seriously.

    During WWII, under the german occupation of Norway, a girl was raped by a german soldier in my hometown Horten.

    Some citizens complain to the Commander of the garrison there. Within days he had tracked down the guilty soldier. The following day the soldier was promptly executed publically in the town square.

    In the '70s and '80s, they followed Friedman and and the Chicago economists and started freeing their economies and privatizing their pension systems. Their economies started to make some progress, until the populists and the socialists managed to turn things around.

    Amazingly.. only in America..

    You know, quite alot of people have argued quite well that the failures of many South American, and New Zealand show how badly the capitalistic model conforms to societies without entrenched and working courts, unbiased military and police etc..

    As an example; take your own country (which I somehow assume is the US), how badly would your corrupt politicions (by our standards) fuck you over if they were allowed 100% free reigns to take kickbacks from the industry?

    And now think again why it isn't happening? It is because you have an elaborate system of checks and balances right?

    But yet you still want to impose privatization on those who have not? Even though you are perfectly aware that the conditions to battle corruption just isn't there? Even though they still have large lower classes which would be thouroughly fucked over by the changes?

    So how about instead of blaming the evil socialists, how about trying to take a real look on whats been happening?

    They interviewed 500 people out of 185 million Americans with Internet-enabled computers.
    The number of people to choose from doesn't affect the variance of the result, only the number of interviews. As far as I know, 500 is usually enough to get quite good results (as long as all normal procedures for random sampling etc are followed).

    To prove it to yourself, setup a webserver with extensive logging. Find somethig to measure, and measure it. Now ditch half your sample size and measure again. Do it a couple of times, and see how little the averages change until you start hitting really low numbers. Now apply that reasoning to generall statistics.

    Reading 100's of strangers passing their respect to yet somebody they've never met dieing gives me a funny feeling.

    How many people die each day? And of those, how many lead sorrowfull lives, filled with pain and suffering? How many of you pay a thought to them, and of those of you who do, are you willing to take a large dent in your own wealth to help them? Are you willing to spare your own time?

    Its a common fact that people really don't care about strangers, but this shirade of caring when the opportunity arises makes me want to puke.

    (To those who knew the victims, apologies for ranting, this was certainly not directed at you)

    For less than the cost of a decent bike lock, you can buy a bike that's not worth stealing.

    I had my 10 year old rusty, locked up bike with a flat tyre stolen from my yard.
    People will steal anything, especially when drunk and/or bored.
