    Actually, it's mainly left up to the distros who usually put in a default choice with an option to change filesystem if you really care.

    It depends on your background. If you spend a lot of time writing C/C++/Java then PHP is a whole lot more attractive than Perl. Because of the similar systax and structire of the language there is no need to spend time getting into a completely different mindset.

    Personally I have nothing against Perl, it's just that I spend about half my time writing server apps in C and the other half writing web apps to interface with them. It makes me more productive to be able to switch languages instantly.

    And Oracle's preferred platform is now Linux. So that cuts Microsoft out of the deal for a high number of Oracle servers. After all, who really cares which operating system a database server is running? Easier just to go with what Oracle says.

    As for MySQL, it can't compete with Oracle for very high reliability systems now. How about in five years? In ten? Twenty? More?

    Some countries definitely will get to vote. I will as I live in the UK, for example. I'm fairly confident of the outcome too - we said no to the euro, we'll say no to the constitution.

    It is fast. WinXP takes around 10 seconds to boot into the desktop on my machine, while Linux takes around 30-40 seconds to enter runlevel 5.

    Huh... I'm running SuSE 9.2 with KDE 3.4 RC1 and it's only using 209MB of memory out of 512MB at the moment. It can't just be "that's the way Linux is".

    The Apple fanboys that happen to be mods are out in force today. In their world, any comments in an Apple story negative towards Apple must be modded down. Of course, if this was a Microsoft story, they would take the opposite stance.

    95% of posts from Windows/Linux/OS X users bashing each other. The other 5% claiming to look at a text terminal all day without actually attempting to jump through a window at the top of the building. (or maybe they bounce when they try?)

    Personally, I'd love to get by without most of my distractions - that would be email (mostly from the sales team, the rest normal business overhead) and the phone ringing constantly. Not to mention that as a programmer in a small business I also have a server admin hat, a DBA hat, and a technician hat. Whole days can go by where I don't get a single line of code written and yet barely have time to eat my lunch. My OS doesn't have a chance to make me unproductive! :)

    I always find that very weird. Gentoo is one of the best distros and yet it has a torturous install process. I'm all for letting people tweak what they want but maybe they could provide a simpler install for those of us that don't actually care about all the optimization.

    MySQL powers a fairly large chunk of the internet so of course you're going to see some MySQL errors.

    I was unable to access part of a site due to MS SQL deadlock errors a few weeks. Why is this relevent? It was part of microsoft.com*! Surely they know how to use their own database server.

    * The order system that lets you download the beta of Windows XP 64-bit.

    And the signal would be different than any other signal how? As I see it, there are two possibilities for the call-home: a), it talks to a satellite. Satellite phones are hardly rare, to give just one example. b) it uses GSM or GPRS to transmit data (or whatever you Americans use instead) which every modern cellphone in the country will have. Even if they somehow track the GPS communications, lots of people have GPS devices to.

    I've been wishing for ages that SuSE would quit using RPM, as it's quite limiting. YaST based on APT or the Gentoo package manager would be awesome.

    I'd suggest one of the easier distros such as SuSE or Red Hat. They'll be much happier with a distro focused on KDE too, as it makes more sense to an ex-windows user.
