You know, it might help if you actually installed a Linux distroD. OS booting from hard drive beats OS booting from CD - well, of course.

Scripting languages I won't comment on - except to say that Linux has all the choice in the world, not to mention the ability to modify the actual source code to add whatever features you like.

I'm not even sure what you are talking about when you mention Java - I'd assume that people generally use, well, Java.

Well, I recently built a new computer. The CD that came with the gigabyte motherboard includes a program called @BIOS that can update the BIOS firmware. The hairs rose on the back of my neck - you can do that from within an operating system? Worse, the program doesn't give the correct binaries for download by default! I'd hate to see the average user using something like that.

I don't know about the other distros, but with SuSE a new user can basically click ok through the entire installation and arrive at a functional KDE desktop. Sane defaults is the key - I'd be shocked if there was a modern distro that didn't have them.

Since all that has kept and will keep Apple going against cheap PC hardware and Windows (and increasingly Linux) is their public relations I doubt it was worth it. Microsoft can keep going because the average Joe knows only Windows. Apple relies on geeks and professionals for their business - and geeks and professionals tend to read sites like slashdot which expose the litigation-happy Apple.
