Uh, what? Only MMORPG are on subscription models. Games that you download are not. If there is some sort of authentication method like Steam, you will need a crack. But you can still copy that data to more permanent storage and use it in the future. Assuming that your system will still play it...which it probably won't and so your cds will be useless as well. If you are really worried about this, just stick with console gaming.
Hate to break it to you...cds are far from permanent. Actually, they decay a lot faster than people think.
If some company goes out of business, people will release a crack. So there is really nothing to worry about. Other than you being surprised when your permanent physical copies don't work in 10 years.
Yeah, your argument is old and tired. Of course, the counter to your argument is what you used to post on Slashdot. Computers are a perfect example of a thing that does multiple things and does them well. What is a gaming console/handheld? It's a computer in a smaller case. Why shouldn't it do more than play games? Obviously, if they screw up how the game plays game to stuff in more functionality then it is dumb. If they do it right though, you have a powerful gaming system that can do more.
You remind me of a child with his hands over his ears screaming "lalalala". There are so many good games out right now that are not FPS that there is no way that you could have played them all. The only genre that really lacks at this point is adventure games...but there are some if you actually look.
Just because a game is rated M, it doesn't mean it has stopped being a game. So what if it has violent or sexual content? Just because it has it doesn't make it gratuitous. I enjoy good games. Whether they are E or M (I haven't played an AO).
I am very excited to see what the Nintendo controller brings to the table. But seriously, if you put even a half assed effort in to it, there are a ton of fantastic games out there that you haven't played. A lot of them are in the bargain bin. Unless you are unemployed and wealthy, you should be extremely happy. Here are some suggestions: Civ IV, geometry wars, tales of symphonia, shattered galaxy, KOTOR, guitar hero, dragon quest VIII. Those alone would keep almost anyone busy for a year.
What the heck are you talking about? Killing Indians in Civ? I don't know what game you were playing. You might find some tribal villages that would give you some gold or technology. The graphic for this was a hut disappearing from the map. Or do you mean the barbarians that ran around the map attacking you? You can win the game defensively even by going for culture, diplomatic, or SS victories...so yeah, you are comparing apples to kittens here.
Obviously the boycott of this game is stupid because it isn't specifically about killing Indians. Many people of different races occur. If you don't know why a game about stringing up slaves in the Civil War is offensive, though, you have some serious serious problems. With everything, there is a line to be crossed.
Yes, bad things happen in history. But even the history books we make our kids read are so skewed that they have no idea what really happened. If history books can't accurately depict these things, you expect people to get this from games? I am not saying a game like this can't exist, I am just saying that games do very little to teach anything today. A game about the civil war cares more about shooting the opposing forces...not education why slavery was thought to be ok. As soon as a game becomes overly educational, no one is going to play it. Games are truly a terrible way to teach (or at least, very few are made that are any good). Studes have shown educational software (this is games designed to teach) are less effective than more traditional methods. And you expect GTA to teach people what motivates people to be in a mafia or in a gang? Give me a break. I am sure everyone who played GTA has now decided gangs are bad and are becoming productive members of society.
Actually, I wasn't to impressed with Q3 compared to Q2. It was just a frag fest...one that even wasn't very fun. If I got up on that platform with the rail gun...just TRY to kill me with a shot gun. Every time you bounce of a platform I would snipe you and you would either die or fall in to space. You would have to get a lucky shot with a rocket launcher when I wasn't looking or if there were many people shooting at me because you could bounce faster then you could rockets. That really was a large part of why I disliked that game...man, the rockets were rediculously slow.
I agree with the other poster...it really removed any strategy and was just a game of who could shoot first. HL2 dm was far superior because of the gravity gun alone. You really can't beat killing someone with a toilet.
I think you are probably just not as good at traditional fps's and found q3 to be more to your liking. There is more strategy in 2 minuntes in CS than there is in a whole month of q3. (don't get me wrong, it's OK and I played in a CTF clan that hit 2nd place out of a few hundred...it's just really not that great of a game...not for why you stated anyways).
Why? Why catch a tiny fish when you can catch a large one? I am totally with you about having clueless family members getting Macs...it was a great move for my mom. My dad on the other hand has had no problem with his Windows box because he knows what he is doing. But the whole 5% comment is a strawman. Mac users should practice better security. It will bite them in the ass someday (well, it will bite the people who get stuck fixing the problem).
Bad analogy. The thing that prevents people from hacking Macs is not a lock, it's that very few people use them. If you can do something that will allow you to steal from many people at once, you would want to hit as many people as possible. This is Windows boxes. The more market share that Mac gains, the more interesting they will become as a target. The problem is that Mac people are way too arrogant about their systems. They believe that their systems are more secure (which is justified to and extent). But they believe they are so secure that they don't bother running any protection. I think Mac users will need a wake up call (i.e. devestating worm or virus) before they actually show any interest in security at all.
Has anyone actually played this game? Is it any good? I mean, if I asked for x to be made and it is really crappy...I wouldn't pay for it either. Maybe he will do what you say and just keep raising the bar...but I would be curious to see the game before I condemn him on this.
So let me get this straight. The guy makes a post about NWN (which is off topic). All he says is that "I won't buy this because it doesn't have a linux client" and it gets modded up? What's wrong with you mods? Just because it has a pro-linux statement in it doesn't make it useful or relevant. It's a fairly stupid post too. It's like saying: I refuse to buy any game that is mac only. This is mostly due to the fact that I don't have a mac.
No, what he is saying is style is part of substance. And to some people, style is more appealing. It might not be your cup of tea, but that's fine. It's good that people are different. It's bad that people look down on others for their differences.
I'd argue that you are looking at the past with rose colored glasses. I grew up with NES too and loved it. But Nintendo still exists and is making great games. There are now other consoles (that as much as slashdotters hate to admit) have great games as well. Gaming is no longer a niche for kids in their basement. While some games are just about the graphics, there are tons of great games done in different styles with plenty of substance.
I agree about not being able to predict a golden age. But if you predict enough things, some of them might be right! Then you are a genious.
You bring up valid points. The only reason I could think to differentiate them is the tactics they use. There are certainly Westerners that do these sorts of things to make a quick (or slow) buck on an auction site. But Chinese gold farmers generally use group tactics and work together to do there farming. Sure, they could be Koreans or some other race, but probably the majority of these people are Chinese. It's not like people are saying all Chinese are gold farmers...that's racism. They are saying they are Chinese gold farmers...which is probably most of the time accurate. It's just an occupation, not really racism. I guess the best example would be if someone were to say, "I'm building a house and I want some cheap Mexican labor". A lot of people would consider that racist. Maybe it is...but really, it is just accurate. They can get Mexicans to do the work cheaper than their American counterparts. It seems like these days just using the word Mexican or Chinese or black is racist. Using the word. Chinese may be further specifying the type of gold farmer. Maybe black gang members in that community are more violent than white gang members...so being specific matter.
Talking about Chinese gold farmers is not racist. Saying all Chinese are gold farmers is. If I were to complain about American gold farmers, it doesn't sound as racist, does it? Why does using the word Chinese magically make it racist?
I disagree with you. In fact, you disagree with you. You contradict yourself in the same post by bringing up Civ IV and try to magically differentiate it by saying that it has changed x and y. It doesn't matter if a game or a movie is a sequel...as long as it is well done. Yeah, sequels can be bad when they don't put time and effort in to it. So can brand new "innovative" movies and games be terrible. But if you take a great game that people love to play and improve it (hell, just give it more story and better graphics) and it still will be a game people love to play. Hate bad games, not sequels.
1) Calling the PSP vs DS 'undecided' is fairly accurate since it's really early for both handhelds. A large drop in price or a killer app could tip the scales for the PSP. The same could strengthen the DS's lead. Only a fan boy would want to say it's all over. Who cares if the PSP ends up selling more? The winner is the consumer who gets what they want, whether it is the DS or the PSP.
2) Yeah, Nintendo didn't bomb. It sold significantly less units than Sony. To some, that is a sign of weakness. As long as they are sound financially, it really doesn't matter, though. We want all companies to do well. The more competition the better!
3) It's hard for me to believe that the Revolution controller will be "the greatest thing ever". Everything is speculation at this point. I am just hoping I don't hate it. I think the GC had the worst of the 3 controllers for the current gen.
4) I agree, Nintendo will probably make the most money. That means they are ripping us off compared to the other companies! (kidding) Seriously though, relax on the fanboyism.
Why posts like this get modded up is beyond me. Well, it's not, because I understand the mindset on here about Nintendo...but you guys go way too far. Just because a console is more graphically capable, it does not mean that any extra power it has goes purely to graphics. It is able to process things faster....this means you can have more items on the screen and it can have better AI. There are a lot of things being more powerful gains you rather than just graphics.
Also, you make some sort of assumption that playing with revolution players online will be better than playing with others. You could be right, but if you take the PA take on the Internet, you will just be playing with another large sets of jackasses. Nintendo targets all ages, which means it will ahve a higher number of young gamers. I don't know abou you, but in general, the younger the players, the more irritating the experience is. Just don't be so judgemental...it works both ways.
You state that "it will probably be a good thing that it won't be filled with the sort of people who eat marketing hype like candy and actually care about graphical powers that might possibly result in a fractionally better looking game." Yet you just bought in to the Nintendo hype. You are comparing a console with something that doesn't even exist yet. It's very hypocritical.
That's the whole freaking point of Eve. It's a sandbox where you can do whatever you want to do. It's a different game than other MMORPG where ripping people off is frowned upon. In this game people are famous for pulling off these sort of things. People put bounties on other people's heads. They try to gain the trust of a corporation just to rob everything that they own. That's the point of the game. It's like complaining that WoW can't be played without an Internet connection. I can understand if some people would not find this type of game fun...but you have to see why some people would be drawn to a game where anything goes.
This "article" reads like it was written by someone who reads the daily gripes about games on Slashdot. They really are guilty of generalizing specific game categories rather than helping anyone find good games. There are good games out there with movie tie-ins. There are great games that take place in WWII now matter how tired they are of it. Independant games are not magically good. Non-Sequels can be terrible. Now, if they said "A large number of games with movie tie-ins are very very bad. There are many exceptions though. Do some research on a title online first and see how people rate it. Check multiple sources." Actually, that's the advice I would give on any game. That article doesn't do much to actually help you. You'd get more out of going to gamefaqs.
You are wrong. Example: Steam with HL2.
Uh, what? Only MMORPG are on subscription models. Games that you download are not. If there is some sort of authentication method like Steam, you will need a crack. Adjusting for inflation, the mainstream target audience flocked to it before...why not now?

Yes, damn their monopoly over gaming consoles! Oh wait...
If they want to make money from re-sales, they should set up the stores themselves. Square-Enix Used Games. That sort of thing.
Or the employees are buying them up and selling them on ebay.
