I think you are confused. Games are another medium for communication just like all of the others you mentioned.
Just because some people who play games and console makers talk about technical specs, that doesn't mean the industry isn't focused on telling a good story. It's the same as some people who get excited over flashy special effects or the brand of instrument some group is using. It is analagous to someone who creates a fancy theatre. They have all the bells and whistles. It allows more complex plays to be presented, though it is still up to the script and the actors to move an audeince.
You complain that previous stories are being produced in the games medium. Ironically, you choose Lord of the Rings. The movie, based of books, was still wildly popular and enjoyable. So what is wrong with making a game out of it if it is still giving people pleasure? That's part of why art exists.
To compare games to other forms of medium that existed far longer and say they are "preferred" is just silly. People who enjoy games have constantly been on the rise since they were introduced.
Sure, some gamers are caught up with graphics. Just like some readers are caught up with crappy romance novels. Some movie goers like movies with a lot of effects and don't care about the plot.
For every criticism you make about games, I can draw an anaolgy to another medium (e.g. Laughing at the Wii's name...laughing at the name of "Attack of the clones"). Did Mozart refuse to write...uhh, no. Are software companies refusing to make games because they don't have enough console horsepower? I really don't get your point there.
I think you have some bias against gaming you need to get over. There are some people who are morons and will criticize you for picking up a console. Same for picking up a genre of book, going to see a certain movie, or enjoying an opera. Truly, gaming is just another medium. It's time for people to open their eyes and just accept that. If they can't, they will fade away as they die off and the newer generations won't even remember that the question was asked.
The difference, to me, is that it sounds like an amazingly stupid idea for a game. Too soon for a game like this? I can't believe anyone would think that a game like this should exist.
Yeah, I have no problem with GTA....it's fiction. I have no problem with WWII games. They just use the weapons and vehicles of that era. You are shooting and others are shooting at you. A lot of us won't experience war first hand...it allows us to have that experience. Besides, as kids we all played some made up scenario where we are shooting at each other. Whether it be playing with tranformers/gi joe or having nerf weapons.
You may try to use my words against me and say this game allows us to experience something that we otherwise wouldn't have...maybe you'd have a point. But it is a stupid scenario. Do you play a potential victim and try to survive? Do you play the attackers and kill innocent children cowering before you? What a stupid concept for a game. It angers me that they would make something that stupid. It won't be fun. It is just people trying to find a way to make a buck.
I am all for them having every right to make this game. But I also have the freedom not to buy the game and hope they fail.
In World of Warcraft, the Horde is not evil. The Tauren (native american) are actually extremely peaceful nature lovers. So there premise is completely wrong.
The only stereotype in the game of Horde vs Alliance is that more mature people play Horde. Now an in depth study of that would make a much more intesting read.
Level 60 skill cap? You mean level cap? Yeah, it will be raised. The expansion did come out fast enough for you, though. Which, I can understand. Once you hit 60 there isn't many options other than PvP and end game raids. That's why you can make an alt and try all the other classes. But maybe that isn't your cup of tea. You already got so far, what fun is to do it all again? What can you do? Oh yeah, you can MOVE ON and STOP PLAYING THE GAME. This game is the biggest success of its genre and you are so arrogant as to suggest they hire and independant consultant to keep in touch with people like you. Well, guess what? There is no perfect game that is going to meet everyone's list of things they want. They do make efforts to appeal to more casual gamers (e.g. the last patch and the new tier 0.5 sets). If you want to get the best stuff in the game, yeah, you have to be hard core. But they don't force you to play that part so just quit and come back with the expansion. Stop thinking that your opinion is the most important. Tons of people love the game and it has massive improvements over the ones that came before. They do make efforts to appeal to people who "cry" like you and are let down. But I am sure you can find some other game that you can enjoy. That's the nice thing about choice.
You have to be kidding me. Nintendo can do just about anything and you guys will desperately rationalize it. You know, they have done some very stupid things in their history (see VirtualBoy). And this one ranks up there. The only way this name could be worse is if this was a product you were supposed to drink.
Nintendo is a company. Companies try to make as much profit as possible. Nintendo has been losing marketshare to MS and Sony (yes yes, I know they are still profitable, but they aren't the console that is in the most homes worldwide now). How do they compete? They are trying to distinguish themselves from their competitors. They say things like "we aren't competing with them" and "we are targeting a different market" and people like you gobble that bs up like it was pumkin pie. There IS going to be Madden on this console. There IS going to be better 3rd party support this round. They are trying to make as much money as possible and this is their strategy to get there. Fortunately, if they make quality games, this stupid name won't matter. But come on, you have to be a fan boy or an astroturfer if you seriously are saying Wii is "whimsical" and means it is going to have fun games.
So they are desensitized? What does that really mean? That if something horrific happens they don't freak out and become useless? Does desensitizing them make them more comfortable doing violent actions? Or is it that violent children tend to want to play violent games? You have to understand that violence existed before video games and movies were thought possible. How did they become violent? Violence is a part of human nature....a part we can hopefully evolve out of, but it is there.
You are right, there are human limits to how much you can do as a parent. But kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for. Bring them up the best you can...be involved in there pass time. Teach them write from wrong and then it won't matter whether they become desensitized or not. There are certain cases where government should be involved...but there are limits to how much that is. The government is clearly incompetant and inefficient at running itself...you want them to raise your children?
You may think saying "it's the parents' responsibilty" is a blow off. But we think people are blowing off being a parent. Quite frankly, people are terrible parents these days and that is the problem with our society. It isn't GTA. If a kid becomes a murderer I guarantee it has more to do with the parents than video games.
That is all this is. If he truly feels this way, then he has some serious mental delusions. The only reason I think that anyone could or would write this up is if they wanted to see a bunch of people get pissed off. While he writes well enough, he fails to argue any of his points. He just places a bunch of degrading labels on the characters without deomnstrating why he believes that. Same when he talks about the plot or storyline. He just complains and doesn't state anything specific to make you say "hey, he has a point". I really dislike people like him...who think they can judge a person based on their tastes on a specific topic. A lot of people had fun playing the game. That was the point...to have fun. If he wants to dis on a game that was made many years ago...well, he has a sad little life. Heck, I bet he enjoyed playing it at the time too. Personally, FFVII had one of the most moving moments I have had in a game. When the pretty girl who is a main character gets slaughtered right in front of you....and you can't bring her back...I remember not wanting to stop playing until I somehow found a way to bring her back.
While FFVII isn't my favorite in the series, I still enjoyed it. And if this pompous ass didn't...well, I am sure he can find plenty of company that enjoy looking down on others for enjoying a certain passtime.
I think it would be fairly uncomfortable working for a company that wants to fire you. Maybe he should find a job where they allow a little more slack in their internet usage policies.
You are modded funny...but seriously, it should be insightful with how spot on this is. I mean...how about movie theatres? Now when I go there I have to watch commercial after commercial if I show up early. Have ticket prices decreased? Nope, they have gone up. Really makes me not want to go see a movie anymore.
Ahh, why do people mod flamebait like this up? XBOX is less family friendly because of the price? Sony will probably be more expensive...so that will make them less family friendly? Price is certainly a sticking point for people buying a console....but from the parents I see, a lot of them buy the kids whatever they want. If MS wants to focus on the family...they need more family oriented games. Games are the key to being family friendly and they are failing (so far) in that respect.
So let's break down your "argument". Point 1: GTA. GTA is more to Sony than it is to MS. So you really don't know what you are talking about. There will always be people pushing the edge on what they can get away with. Politicians can make a big stink for awhile, but eventually they will chase down their next demon and games will be just like tv and movies...going as far as they can. Point 2: Wal-mart. What the heck are you talking about? Walmart will sell 360 and its games. If some game comes out that is too violent for Walmart, they either fix it up or it sells elsewhere. Maybe they make less of a profit, but MS isn't losing money on a 3rd party failed game. They still gain all the money from licensing. Besides, most games are going to be cross platform so singling out MS is just your personal bias. Point 3: What's your point? MS is looking at a market that Nintendo is traditionally strong in. It's not like they will suddenly stop catering to people who play Halo.
Nintendo will do fine. They will go along happily making a profit. But you really let your bias show way too much. Who wants a $99 360? Umm, I do and I am sure millions of others. If the 360 is to compete with Nintendo in family friendly, it just has to start making games for that audience. If you look at inflation, the 360 is in line with what consoles have always gone for. People just like to whine about it a lot more these days.
This comes down to a he-said, she-said sort of thing. Harlan is a known prick with a gigantic ego. This gives his side of the account...but really, this guy is wrapped in a fantasy world where he is the center. He perceives himself as victimized...totally innocent which you know is utter bs. His whole account is riddled with insults towards the PA guys and their audience. He can't understand that plenty of intelligent, articulate people read and enjoy those comics (and playing video games). He believe his medium of communication is superior and looks down upon others. Don't defend this asshole. Maybe if he took a social styles class he would realize how everyone else perceives him and maybe try to be a little more humble. Like I said, there is no way to say who was right in all this...but the PA guys sure seem a heck of a lot more credible to me. And what's with the whole "you spoke poorly of my wife, now I will hunt you wherever you live" part? Seriously, the guy needs counseling.
Pretty much every game machine I have ever seen or built has two drives to allow for burning straight from CD to CD or DVD to DVD. Of all the things to nitpick about...
Uhh, no. They are happy to buy American products. Xbox did not have games that appealed to them. It was way too large and ugly to fit in the small living areas a majority of people live in. All MS needs to do is get good Japanes RPGs and they will do well. It's the games, stupid.
I totally agree. Just have to get used to it on here. If you say positive things about Linux, Apple, or Nintendo, you get modded up...no matter how flamebaitish.
I really don't understand this mind set. Compitition is good. We want all the companies to do well to strive to give the consumer better prices and more quality.
Could Nintendo do "better" this round? In terms of profit...sure. In terms of most consoles sold? Probably not. It might, just because it will be cheaper. Also, they may appeal to a different market than Sony and MS. Could Nintendo fail? Absolutely...look at virtualboy...look at their decision to stick with cartridges.
Why is XBOX doing poorly in Japan? It's the games. If they could get SquareEnix on board...game over. They need Japanese RPGs if they want to work over there.
But yeah...GP post...mod down.

Am I the only one who is upset at the repeated mis-use of the word "final"?
No, you aren't if you read any other thread where some half-wit whines about the same thing. Final Fantasy (the original one) was supposed to be the last game for a dying company. Well, it turned out to be a bit. And thank god, because they made some of the best games after that one. It's not hard to use your imagination and say it is the final fantasy of this group of people or someone else's final fantasy. But seriously, it is just name. You know that it is an RPG and they tend to be pretty good (though some may argue they can't match their past peaks).
I may be wrong, but I've observed many who were 18 still being in that akward and easily infouenced stage. Seriously...college can really suck people in to the college crowd. It depends on the maturity of the individual.
This won't work. Why? Because how fun would a game be if every single quest you tried to do was already done by someone else?

I can see how someone coming from a non-gaming background could have some trouble jumping in and getting all the controls of modern games. But you don't really have that excuse since you were playing for a long time. It is really easy to get in to any game. There are different learning curves for games...but they are still extremely easy to pick up. I mean...if you look online how many idiots there are playing these games...I'd have to assume that the majority of people given the tiniest amount of effort are going to be able to figure things out.
I don't think games are to blame for you being less hardcore. I think you just grew up/burnt out on games. There are still plenty of games out there to be played that are fun. People bitching about sequels kind of have a point. But some of the greatest games of all time are sequels (see how much people love ff6 and/or ff7). Obviously, you can't count EA in this that just churn out sequel after sequel and offer no real innovation. But other sequels are just fine since they innovate or improve on something that people already find fun.
It sounds to me like you just like genres that died off. You don't have good twitch reflexes and those types of games don't come naturally to you so it's unfun. I hardly think the game industry is stagnant and boring. If you really think that go pick up Guitar Hero and tell me that there is nothing fun and innovative coming out.
I really don't see how you counter his argument. Sure, the skills are different. But simpler games can be made for this platform. If they can't keep up with the big dogs...why not try making games for cell phones. They are not trying to squeeze doom3 on to your cell, so it isn't so much an issue. Think games like pacman. People find (or found) it fun, addicting, and it isn't hard to keep it small even if you aren't very competant.
Your next argument is dumb. Let me explain how markets work. The potential market for cell phones are people who can hear, hold things to there ears, and are in range of the cellular providers. The potential market for cell phone games are people who own cell phones. Since this is a large number, it is an attractive market. No one is so stupid to think that everyone who has a cell phone will get a game.
I think you are confused. Games are another medium for communication just like all of the others you mentioned.

You are trying to argue that the red cross symbol in a game will make people trust Red Cross less. You do realize that that is rediculous, right?
