  1. Re:PC accelerator on What Magazines Do You Read? · · Score: 1

Well, at least two now. I subscribed rather late and only have the last 7 or 8 issues. Apparently those who have issues hoard them like I, I can't find back issues anywhere. Yes, that's how good it was, I'd buy back issues for a long-dead computer game magazine.

  2. Astonishing X-Men on Official Firefly Movie Web Site Launched · · Score: 2, Informative
I admit, I haven't watched any of Joss Whedon's shows. However, he is writing the new X-Men comic, and so far I am really enjoying his story setup and take on the characters. Issue 2 came out this week, as well as a "Director's Cut" of Issue 1.

If you're out of the X-Men loop, (or never in it in the first place), Issue 1 does a decent job of setting up the situation and characters, though it does make more sense if you've been following the recent story lines. Hopefully I'll get to check out Firefly soon, since his comic writing reflects well on him.

  7. The Real(?) Reason, from Gamestop on Game Retailers' Return Policies Criticized · · Score: 1
I was at the local Gamestop, and one of the employees mentioned their new return policy. (Return in 3 days for new games for store credit I believe, used to be 14 or longer and cash I believe. One might not even be able to exchange new games for others. Their used game policy is much more friendly.) Then he told me the reason why. Evidentally Gamestop (and I've suspected EB of doing this as well) would sell newly-bought, returned games in new condition as new, even though they had technically been used. Apparently some kid bought one of these returns (at another store), thinking it was a new one (as it was sold to him), took it home, and his mom discovered that it was actually was one that had been returned.

Of course, since this is America, she didn't just return it and bitch and get her money back (which the clerk assured me that the store would have done if she had complained.) Instead she sued Gamestop for something like $1 million, and they were forced to make their return policy much stricter. Like I said, odds are EB does or used to do the same, for I've bought 'new' copies of games that weren't the display copy, and the disc wasn't in a sealed case.

(As an aside, I hate getting a display model. I don't care if the disc is untouched or not, having an unsealed case with a bunch of extra stickers on it doesn't sit well with me.)

Anyway, I don't like the idea of getting a used copy marketed as new, it just sucks that their policy had to be changed. I liked the fact that if I bought a game and absolutely detested it I could get my money back. I only did this once (at an EB) and spent my money in the store on another game anyway.

(Of course, this could all be a line of BS that was fed to me, but it seemed sincere.)

Kind of sad that my cheap Linksys router's firewall kept me protected (I didn't patch until this morning because of it, tisk tisk I know) while the school with all its tech heads is getting blasted.

Of course, maybe I shouldn't be suprised, this is the same school that put Debian on all the Sparcs and NT boxes, yet has CS professors that require homework to be submitted in a Word template that OpenOffice.org Writer chokes on. If Blizzard and Valve released all their games with Linux clients, and I didn't have to deal with stupidity such as the previous example, I wouldn't even be using fscking windows...I'm converted to OpenOffice.org, and Mozilla Thunderbird/Firebird.

First, fuck the mods that moderated this as funny. As someone who went to high school with her, knows her a little, and considers himself good friends with her brother, I don't find this funny at all.

Second, I'm as outspoken as anybody about my displeasure with Bush and the whole Iraqi situation as anyone, but don't blame it on the kids who join the armed forces because they see it as a way to afford college and have a better life while showing a little pride in their country.

Finally, try seeing people you know and know well talking on Dateline and shows like that about someone you know that was seriously injured while somewhere that she never should have been. I'm tired of all the sensationalism too, but that doesn't give me or anyone else the justification of making light of the people involved in the situation.

  14. navy ship tech on USS Ronald Reagan Commissioning Tomorrow · · Score: 2, Interesting

A family friend used to work for the Navy designing computer systems for the various large ships. (One project he worked on was a system to replace paper maps with electronic versions. He had to develop a giant screen to display the maps that could serve as a table as well...they had to be Captain's coffee proof.) After a long and grueling project was developed, he got to go to the Mediterranean and Hawaii to install the systems onto the ships. What was nice was that he could take his vacation right after he was done installing the systems, and get his transportation to and from the exotic locales paid for by his job.
