  1. Re:But since we are trying to compare quantities.. on The Un-Google - The Search Competition · · Score: 1

Gp wasn't suggesting computing energy, just pointing out that a bare mv results in a vector, not a scalar that can be easily compared. What we want is m|v|, which can be computed as m * sqrt(v^2). And anway, for "energy" computation purposes mv^2 will get you double the "true" figure (assuming you were interpreting it as kinetic energy), since K.E. = 0.5 * m * v^2.

  7. MMORPGs on WoW, EQ2, SWG Content Updates · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why can't MMORPGs have user-modifiable, organically-growing worlds? It's pretty inefficient for a small group of developers to have to create everything: you're obviously never going to get the same level of detail (could they create something as detailed as even a typical small town?).

By comparison, allowing players to construct buildings, create communities, etc., on randomly generated terrain would create a world with detail proportional to the number of players.

    I'd nearly play that game.

  8. JavaScript on JavaScript Inventor Speaks Out · · Score: 4, Interesting

It's a pity JavaScript rarely gets the attention it deserves as a legitimate programming language. Most guides to C begin with teaching you how compilers work; most guides to JavaScript teach you how to swap some images.

This is unfortunate as it's quite powerful: it supports first-class functions and an excellent generic object-system, not to mention the usual suspects such as dynamic memory management.

Hopefully its apparent resurgence these days (as browser vendors get their compatibility acts together) will change this.

  10. Batman on How the Batsuit Works · · Score: 4, Insightful

Looking forward to the new Batman -- he's one of the deepest comic book heroes out there. Apart from his own turmoil, documented throughout the series, the madness, brooding insanity and general darkness of Gotham is still an interesting depiction of a vaguely 40s American Urban wasteland. It contrasts fairly starkly with today's forgettable, fluffy all-star heroes.

This Kuro5hin article makes interesting reading.

"Even at a price of $10k, we don't expect to sell more than maybe 20-50 license"

Very few products have a market this small. If you can get it off the ground, to the point that you ship just 20, there's no reason 200, 2,000, or more is not an option. Don't write off the chance of making some money, or at least the opportunity of recouping some of your investment.

  12. Hmm on Open Sourcing Software in a Large Corporation? · · Score: 1

Be careful about jumping into open-source. Remember, most successful projects scratch the itch of a developer. Chances are, this is a product of interest mainly to large companies -- not your average Linux hacker - open source won't be a panacea. A model that combines open-source and the associated benefits with a per-seat support contract, could very well work, however. Considering the huge investment ($2m) your company has made, it's certainly worthwhile to try to recoup as much as possible. It nearly goes without saying: don't assume that you can just throw it out into the open. It works for some projects (e.g. WebKit recently), because it's directly applicable to a lot of end-users. Not every project's like that.
