To me it seems to be fairly random.

One set of Apple earphones lasted for 2+ years, even after I had to duct tape part of the wire that had gotten exposed.

A second set of no-names I got after those lasted less than 6 months.

A third set of Apple earphones only lasted a couple of months.

The fourth set I got, no-name earphones are currently just over a year with no problems.

I think DeeKayWon's point was more that people are automatically (and incorrectly at least in this one case) assuming that AAC takes more CPU to decode than MP3 than it was anything else.

Nobody in their right mind would use AAC or WMA for non-encrpyted files

I'd say that's a bit of an overstatement. While I personally still use MP3, I know several people who have made an informed decision based on their own usage and decided that AAC fits their needs best. I don't know a great deal of Windows users, but I imagine there are some out there that actually enjoy WMA.

I used to play Q1 with some guys who were completely inept. Eventually I just started what I termed the choo-choo train, where I'd run laps on dm6 with the grenade launcher, with the firebutton held in. They never succeeded in killing me, and I had a hilarious time just seeing their faces as they were trying to get each other with the shot gun only to see me running through the room with a hail of explosions following.
