The trouble with this is that there really isn't much money collected in this manner. Especially when you look at how it's distributed.

YES! And this was, ironically, the first Heinlein novel I ever read (at age 20). Talk about a shock :) Since that one book, I've always got a Heinlein novel on the go - I'm addicted, and I have to read them ALL! Personally, I was a tad disappointed in some of the juvie stuff (Spaceman Jones was a total bummer for me, because I'd been spoiled with "To Sail Beyond the Sunset", "I will Fear No Evil" and "Methuselah's Children"). At the time I didn't realize that there were two or three separate and distinct audiences for Heinlein's writing.

I have to admit, I love Asimov's writing too, but I'm never *disappointed* when they end, you know? Except for the Black Widower stuff - I can never get enough of those. But Heinlein's books leave me with a sense of continuity - I need more of the story. I need to follow these characters further. now that I've read all the critical reviews in this discussion, I think i'll read Number of the Beast next!

Marijuana does NOT have ten times the carcinogens of tobacco. That's ridiculous. Where does tobacco get the carcinogens from? Only two of about 80 different carcinogens found in cigarettes come from the tobacco itself. The rest come from chemicals used in processing. Marijuana (at least, the good stuff) isn't processed. It's a dried leaf, pure and simple. No chemicals, no nasty stuff, no mercury, etc. Smoking it probably isn't the healthiest thing for your lungs, but if you have to choose a vice, and consume responsibly, it's one of the least harmful. Chocolate can cause more harm than pot.

In Canada, it's even more idiotic. At the bottom of each receipt, you have the GST (Goods and Services Tax, which EVERYBODY, except registered First Nations card holders pays) and the PST (Provincial Sales Tax).

Several years ago, our (ahem) wonderful PM proposed bringing the Value-Added system, whereas all retail prices would already include the GST. This would mean that, on a province-by-province basis, retailers would only have to add the PST, if there was one. Would have made things MUCH easier. Who knows why they didn't go through with it (I'm sure someone here knows... but I don't).

As I understand it, the Brits have been doing it this way for years.

Another reason Last Crusade is very popular, even as an old guy, Sean Connery is one sexy dude :) (yes, Harrison Ford is too, but man, Sean Connery! *drool*) That will pull in the female audience (the non-geek one) that Raiders and Temple of Doom didn't grab.

I'm not disagreeing with you in any way, however learning more about Canada's history is sketchy in the current education system. Do you know that not a single textbook in a Franco-Ontarian school (no, we're not deplaced Quebecois) will tell you who won that war? I didn't find out until I left high school and went to an Anglo college. Similarly, when I was in grade 10 Canadian History, English textbooks said that Riel was a traitor - French textbooks said he was a hero.

Any materials by which you learn your history will be skewed according to one perspective or another. It's unfortunate, but it's true. As someone who works for the Historical Section of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, I work closely with the people who publish our department's historical publications. We try our best to be impartial and to present the facts accurately, but often, the only materials we have available on which to base our conclusions are interviews with people. How objective can those be?

Just a bit of food for thought.

  19. Re:Keep em on the phone. on Suing Telemarketers Made Simple · · Score: 3, Informative
Unlisted phone numbers mean nothing. Some companies print out large sheets that start with just the exchange and the first digit of the rest of the phone number, and work their way up by hundreds from there (for example, the TM's first sheet of the evening would start with 555-1000 and work its way up to 555-1099, second sheet would start with 555-1100 and wor its way up to 555-1199) That way, regardless of whether the number is out of service, a business, or even unlisted, the TM will get through. Sad to say, but that's how some of the smaller companies do it.

Some other small companies just rip pages out of a phone book, distribute photocopies of the pages to their staff, and their "DO NOT CALL" list consists of a black line through that name and number on the phone book page.

Only larger companies which contract out to several clients use automated dialers... Our local newspaper's contracter has four large ADs with twenty lines each, and then in the back, they have a room for manual dialers who handle rural accounts.

Of course, here in Canada, use of AD's is not as common as in the US. You can't just pick one up at the corner store. I'm not sure if it's regulated, but the larger telemarketing companies are VERY careful to follow the rules (Do Not Call lists are updated daily, no calling before 9am or after 9pm, no calling on Sundays, etc.)

It's a sad business tho - most of the employees quit after a month or two - they can't take the constant rejection. It takes a very special breed of person to stay in telemarketing over the long term. Hopefully that breed will become extinct soon :)

When I was a telemarketer (don't shoot me please, I was starving!), we sold magazine subscriptions to people in Mississippi-Alabama-Louisiana from a little office in Ottawa, Canada. I find it amusing that telemarketers will now be required to transmit Caller ID information :) Back then, we were ORDERED to dial *67 (or whatever the ID Block thing is) before EACH call, so that the calls couldn't be traced easily. Never mind the fact that we were calling from outside the country in an attempt to circumvent US laws (didn't work tho, the company that we were contracted to was US-based, so the owner got screwed that way). Funny things, those laws. Most people running call centres here haven't got the slightest clue. I'm sure the owners of the companies are a little more aware, but the people actually working the floors don't know squat.

I'd be interested to see what the laws are in Canada.

Of course, a decent justification for this is that you'd know immediately if your kid was snatched, however, how many false kidnapping calls would cops get over the course of a year? All because little Johnny decided to go to his friend Bobby's house after school? Sheesh.
