Yup. Here's info from Hubblesite: The story of this planet's discovery began in 1988, when the pulsar, called PSR B1620-26, was discovered in M4. It is a neutron star spinning just under 100 times per second and emitting regular radio pulses like a lighthouse beam. The white dwarf was quickly found through its effect on the clock-like pulsar, as the two stars orbited each other twice per year. Sometime later, astronomers noticed further irregularities in the pulsar that implied that a third object was orbiting the others. This new object was suspected to be a planet, but it could also be a brown dwarf or a low-mass star. Debate over its true identity continued through the 1990s.

Sorry, but you're wrong. It's not illegal or immoral to print these kind of stories. The editorial doesn't encourage readers to break the law or join the project. It informs us that a community has sprung up to make an unofficial translation of the last Potter book. This is what sites such as Slashdot should do.

But should it be wrong for someone who has brought a copy of the book but wants to read it in their native language to have access to that?
Personally, I think this would be great -- but this is not how it works. I recently bought the fifth Potter book. The edition was in english, which is not my native language. Should I expect to get the translated copy of the book for free when it's eventually released a few months down the road? Of course not -- how on earth would the publisher recoup the money spent on translating and printing localized copies?

Now, this fan based translation is something else. Could it hurt sales of the official translation? Who knows, but if it does, it can't be good for the reader. In the off chance that a lot of readers will download the localized text and skip buying the book, what incentive would the publisher have to translate the next Potter book?

  6. Talk about commitment on Harry Potter in German, not Czech · · Score: 2, Interesting
You reaally have to be a fan to do something like this. I don't think this will hurt the eventual release of the official translation, given that the project could never release the unofficial translation on the market. It would immediately be pulled back, and no, this is not a censorship issue but an issue of who owns the copyright.

I can't see JK Rowling endorsing the project, at least not officially, but this speaks volumes of how committed the fans are to her stories, and if I were her, I'd be proud.

Interesting idea. The article was on the skimp side though. Probably no fear of slashdotting, but here goes:
UPN announced that it has picked up the computer-animated SF comedy pilot Game Over as a series. The network has given a six-episode midseason order to the Carsey-Werner-Mandabach show, which features the voices of Marisa Tomei and Patrick Warburton.

Written and executive produced by David Sacks, David Goestch, Jason Venokur and Ross Venokur, Game Over centers on the Smashenburns, an ordinary suburban family who live in an alternate video-game universe inhabited by action heroes, monsters and cartoon characters. Also executive producing are CWM's Marcy Carsey, Tom Werner and Caryn Mandabach.

In addition to Tomei and Warburton, who will voice Mrs. and Mr. Smashenburn, the voice cast also includes E.G. Daily and Rachel Dratch, who portray their teen kids, and Artie Lange as the family's 300-pound pet creature.

I do not think that the SCO case made them refuse the job. When I read the article, the SCO case gives them an excuse not to do the CD duplication.
Aren't you contradicting yourself? The SCO case haven't been tested yet and until it is, any action they take based upon the case is precautionary. So while the SCO case in itself can't force them to deny the job, they are denying it because there might the problems down the road. I'm guessing that there won't be, but hey, some people are more uncomfortable with the odds than I am.
  18. Linux's image on CD Duplicator Refuses Linux Job, Citing MS Contract · · Score: 5, Interesting

This is further proof that the SCO debacle is hurting the image of Linux in the marketplace and in the eyes of the consumer. SCO may not have a sound case, but they are causing a lot of confusion about the legality of Linux.

There's also the part of the contract with Microsoft. This company is obviously not going to risc their probably very important economic ties to Microsoft for a mere 500 cd copy job -- no sane business person would -- but yet again we see evidence that the strong arm tactic Microsoft has employed since the DOS days (anyone remember DR DOS?) is still very much a part of their modus operandi.

The entertainment industry loves 15+ kids for their spending power, but loathe them for the grand scale theft of music and videos. While the new apple box certainly opens the door up to porting to Apple, the lag time before Intel comes out with 64 bit proccessors wont be long enough for significant entrenchmant.
Given that Intel is already producing a 64 bit processor, there won't be a lag time per se. However, since Intels initial offering seems destined not to be a popular chip, most Windows users will have to wait until AMD releases their Athlon64 to enjoy 64 bit computing. So, yeah, I get your point, but it's not for lack of an Intel processor, just the lack of a decent, fair priced Intel processor.

A screener is usually close to dvd quality. A telesync copy OTOH can be quite good, but is usually lacking in sharpness and quality. The X2 copy was pretty decent as far as telesync copies go. The Matrix Reloaded telesync that was in the news some time ago was pretty bad, though. At the bottom of the barrel are handycam copies. I know people who will watch these, but I always skip them. I like quality, but I can watch a telesync copy if there's nothing else available. I do try and hold out for the DVD rip though or for when they're available for rental for the most part, or as in the case with Matrix Reloaded, go to the theatre.
