Well Slashdot is an advocacy and chat forum, it certainly isn't a "news" source in the idealistic journalism sense. Though admittedly it would be interesting, now that/. has a Politics section, to see more discusson on this.

but I think it is a little premature to suggest that the internet is doomed because of the Indymedia fiasco.
Perhaps be able to "play" the movie but thru a video-out connection instead. Actually that might be kind of cool, PVR something at one location, take the PDA somewhere else, and plug it into a TV. Of course I suppose you could just get a laptop for that I suppose.
It's not even an "application" update anyways, it's just a configuration method for the webserver itself. Sure, there will have to be testing and documenting involved, but given that this is really just a configuration issue I don't see it as much more than a "patch".
I'm not defending Microsoft, I'm simply saying that the actual fix for the problem isn't what the Slashdot write-up implies ("rewrite their applications"). Adding a few lines in Global.asx is NOT a "rewrite".
Some have, sure. I think it is just a matter of zealot perception versus the perception of those who some of the rest of us are trying to sway (my handle notwithstanding).
Day 42: Beginning to wonder how long this whole ordeal is going to be. I heard a voice in the sky saying the word "crossover", I don't know what that means. Ran into some squidy looking character trying to convince me it was, is his words, "a trap". Still not King, but suddenly feel compeled to investigate something called the "force".
Yes, I do understand exponentials, just not thinking terribly fast today. I forget the kilo/mega/tera scale... I think I'll just refer to the size as Wowzerbytes.
Perhaps. I agree with the notion that it's pretty much marketing hype, but who knows. Maybe someone will invent tech that stores untold terabytes on something the size of a penny... and solar powered... with a built-in MP3 player of course.
While it is pretty much marketing hype, it doesn't necessairly hurt to consider future expansion. I'm sure 20 years ago no one thought IPV4 would become confining. Of course, the foil hat crowd will have to worry about the government storing everyone's entire DNA string.
There are a lot of instances of the word "cumulative" in this list ("Cumulative patch for Internet Explorer..."). I wonder how many true bugs are fixed with this, not just support article entries.
How long until 321 will be required to hand over their customer list (at least the ones that registered)? If they can force this company out of business, it seems to me the next step is to go after the users. You know, the ones doing the acutal "law breaking".

Just in time for the elections. "Hey Hollywood, us government types are doing the job you want us to! How about some more 'donations'!?"
OMFG have you seen the The Settlers Of Catan trailer?!?>11` ...
Google is not god.
Correct, Google is much more useful.

It sounds better to yell "rewrite!" for the knee-jerk Slashbots rather than "five line patch!"
"Nothing for you to see here. Please move along."
At least he's consice.

Yikes! Yeah, good thing I'm on cold meds else I'd be clawing at the sheets as well.
"without backing from large corporations"? Indy smindy, a good game is a good game regardless of who wrote it.

No, that's called "Tyrrany of the Majority", one of those things too few people learn while growing up.
not a sinister plot by the Government to enslave the population, as you yankees seem to be happy to believe so easily.
I'll try to remember that when they threaten to throw me in jail for not paying my taxes that pays for "services" I didn't ask for.
Greedo: "Han, I am your mother!"
Han: *BANG*

But of course you'll still have to have your boot image within the first 1024 cylinders.

NPR has a cool piece regarding how radio may not be the best approach to looking for ET life.
Right off the bat doesn't this violate wiretapping laws? I thought there was a clause that prohibits mucking around with phone tech like this.

It is not illegal for you to own or use the software. The injunction only applies to 321 Studios.
