  1. I don't undestand what's the big deal to switch... on Time to Kill Microsoft Word? · · Score: 1
I just weaned(sp?) my wife off of Microsoft Word by installing OOo. I opened all of her Word docs in OOo and saved them to .pdf format and she hasn't missed a thing by me removing Microsoft Office from the PC. Granted, she's part of the 90/10 crowd b/c all she writes is memos, letters etc. Nothing fancy. She barely notices that she's not using MS Word. I've never had any issues working with .pdfs in Windows or Linux.

Now if I could only get her to use her Linux as a desktop, I'd be _very_ happy. Kills me to pay $100 for an upgrade to WinXP when I have subscription service to Slackware.

Trust me.....they won't be able to say they're not a telephone provider for much longer. The federal government will not let these VoIP providers be exempt from regulations (read: Universal Service Fund, CALEA). They can become a tremendous source of revenue for the government.

considering heaps of people use OpenOffice.org and the like on Windows, I really don't see many people using MS Office under linux.

It just may make it easier to convince the PHB to give linux on the desktop a try without having to deal with minor document incompatabilities.

Xorg is a fork of XFree86 due to a change in licensing on XFree86 software. Apparently the XFree license has had a 'marketing/advertising' clause added to it which may make it incompatible with the GPL. That was the straw that broke the camel's back..... From what I've read, their has been a lot of friction for a long time between XFree leadership and development community for various reasons (too many to list here). The company that maintains the database of numbers is Telcordia formerly Bellcore. The document that the records are stored in is the LERG (Local Exchange Routing Guide). For now LNP only works (landlines not wireless) within your LATA (Local Access Transport Area). My LATA is 132 which covers NYC, 5 boroughs, Long Island, Westchester County and Greenwich CT. Numbers are reused constantly. Nowadays Telcordia doles out the numbers to carriers in as small as thousand-number blocks in an effort to keep the number pool from exhausting itself. No one owns a telephone number except the telco. As a customer of Verizon, you are "leasing/renting" your phone number. The phone number is not yours to sell. Local Number Portability does not transfer ownership between the telco and the customer. LNP transfers ownership between telco providers. Try a google for LERG (Local Exchange Routing Guide). This is the bible for telcos to see which carrier owns which block of numbers AND which blocks of numbers are portable. Verizon was/is well within their rights to stop the auction.
