Is it "possible" to write software that will run in linux that does not "require" GPL code? (This is a valid question not a flame) If I wished to write software for Linux and charge for the software (Not just support) is it realisticly achievable without having to re-write a swag of libraries.
Is support the only way to 're-coup' costs from a research and development, or is the best open source business model to just not bother until someone explicitly pays you to develop the work. Then release it for free (as per the licences) and completely alienate your client as you then supply all your code to the 'community' aka, their competing company who now doesnt have to pay for said OSS product.
One simple executable. Called the KeyUpdateTool.exe provided by microsoft. It will update a 'pirate' version of Windows XP with the new CD key you provide. It is non destructive and has worked flawlessly on the 10 machines I have had to use it on. Your mileage may vary but I would recommend this option to all who purchase a valid license.
Why use an old PC. The quake engine has been in the public domain for quite a while, you can get Win32 and Linux executables that will run on any modern machine.
I cannot remember all of the projects that use the Q1 engine, however a quick search on Sourceforge.net is sure to return some results.
Why do parents have to try and be 'reactive' and block websites that are questionable, I believe that for underage children they should only have access to websites that the parents have previosly deemed acceptable ala 'white list'. Children do not require unfetted access to the web and I do not see any problem with placing the burden of approving content on the parents.
I have to comment here, I own one of those 'mom & pop' style computer stores, I have the honour of removing virus and spyware infestations from computers all day everyday.
AVG in my humble opinion does not cut it, On more than one occasion I have had machines in the workshop that Had AVG installed and up to date, and AVG claimed 'no virus found' yet running an antivirus over the drive in my bench machine has turned up a virus.
Norton Antivirus for home is very intrusive and cumbersome, although it does offer a high level of protection. I personally do not like the fact that it uses MSHTML.DLL to display its 'control centre' pages as this file is commonly messed up by spyware, however this is my biggest gripe with Nortons.
Norton Antivirus Corporate edition however is fantastic, Light weight program (small memory footprint, does not make the machine feel slow) and it has 'mircro definitions' that are less than 500k downloads (typically 100-200k) thus 'Live Updates' do not take long even on dialup.
If only symantec would release this product as a standard retail package (like the nortons boxes you see everywhere)
I have a 3 x 320Gb RAID5 array in my home server, When i upgraded from my 3 x 200Gb drives it took a very long time to copy the data from the old array to the new (I left it overnight)
We need a way of getting the data on and off the drives quicker.
Its not like I need to access all the 640Gb all the time, but it shouldnt take hours if I need to.

I totally agree. Slashdot seems to have degraded in quality substantially since I started reading it. How about we all recommend our other favourite websites so as to atleast offer something new on here!..
The above poster recommend Digg ?? got a link ?
I find that any story of interest appears on BluesNews.com way earlier than slashdot these days even though it is primarily aimed at games and gaming!
On the contrary. Laptops have hdd's, memory, cpu, lcd displays that can be harvested and sold quite profitable. I believe those of you in the US are familiar with a site called 'ebay' well, here in australia there is always a large collection of laptop 'parts' available
As someone who has a literal 'pile' of dead motherboards from the last round, all I can say is not again. Worst thing is that they seem to usually outlast the warranty. Or atleast the symptoms dont show up till after the warranty expires.
I think this lil video on Trusted Computing is perfect at explaining trusted computing.
I leave it running on the computers on display in my store. Hopeing that I can educate enough people in my small section of the world about the follies they are about to embark on.
Azureus also has a plugin called SafePeer that automagically downloads a list of 'bad' IPs. Currently there are about 117,000 banned IPs in my block list, and I get good solid download speeds. Could also just add the HBO range of IP address's to the block list, thus their clients will be ignored completely.
The Australian government isnt forcing EBAY to charge tax, and it isnt forcing anyone to pay tax. All they are stating, is that IF the item being sold has a tax portion, that is must be INCLUDED in the bidding price.
Eg. under IT goods on ebay, many computer stores sell items, and they provide 'tax invoices' on the goods. However many also used to have a little 'note' in their payment section stating that the FINAL sale price was 'bid' price + 10% (GST).
This can be frustrating for bidders who have to look at all the 'fine print' trying to ensure that when they bid on a $1000 item + $20 freight they dont get charge $1122 for the sale.
This is something I havent seen metioned before, Last time I checked (When I paid for my 10,000 song subscription) it was ONLY win32, but it was BRILLIANT at getting the names, id3 tags right on my assorted collection of mp3's. Named about 75% of a 20Gb collection no problemos.
Yeah we get the simpsons, but it would seem that the simpsons is the ONLY show that channel ten has to offer. We get simpsons every night for half an hour, and two nights a week we get close to two hours of simpsons *AND they are atleast 8-10 weeks behind in season 16*
I am an australian who has been using bittorrent for many months now *over 1 year I think* and I use azureus + the RSS feed pluging to auto scan btefnet.org and grab all the latest episodes of the Simpsons, Desperate Housewives, Medical Investigations, Battlestar Galactica and others. No adverts and easily faster than the commercial channels, For example, I STARTED downloading the FULL battlestar galactica first season PLUS the two 'mini series' shows AFTER if had completed airing in the US, and I still had all 5.0Gb downloaded before the free to air channels started the mini series.
Sounds easy!
Thanks for the eloquent reply

Because they format and re-install so often!

We may not all read our EULA's. However I have found the following software EULAlyzer really handy in highlighting important items in the EULA.
Its not a substitute for truelly reading the whole EULA, however I find it good at helping me and my customers identify 'dodgy' software.

Better get ready for another round of upgrades !

Wow, a vic 20...
I still remember a game called 'wild west' on my Trash-80 "Tandy TRS-80" for those not familiar with this beast!

40Gb may be common in desktop computers, However a 1.8" drive is NOT common in desktop computers.
Debiarn 'sarge' will be Debian 3.1 according to the site.

I think all of you are missing the point of 'trackerless' bittorrent...
Trackerless BT will not stop the **IA from closing down the websites that allow you to download the torrent files.
Trackerless BT just takes it from a 3 step to 2 step procedure.
Still my favourite linux error was
'Kernel panic. Food Fight!'
Made me chuckle thats for sure

Here in Australia I think it is against the law to offer less than a 1 year warranty.. but im no lawyer, so pinch of salt time
To this day, my favourite linux error message is
'Kernel panic, food fight!'
Gotta love OSS error messages.
