But as a reseller, I recommend ALL my customers who are thinking LCD to consider Samsung ? Why, Not response time, Not clarity, viewing angle or anything. Purely on Samsungs replacement warranty. 7 Days No Questions asked from customer Invoice. Which considering other panel manufactures consider 'Dead Pixels' as a Characteristic of LCD monitors this policy makes Samsung exceptional. Try telling a customer who just bought a nice new 17" LCD panel that it isn't a failure till 7-9 pixels fail. Not good enough, Thus samsung gets my vote on LCD.
Just started investigating the same thing myself. My oldest firewall machine *A 6x86-p120+ with 32mb of Ram* just gave up the ghost, Was a great machine really as both the cpu and psu fan gave up over 2 years ago and it never missed a beat. Anyways. This is an informative read to help gather info on all the products that ARE out there.
I have approximately 300 business's that I support, Almost ALL (99%) run windows configurations of some sort. Why ? not because of games ? Not because of office support, but because here in australia, Since the introduction of the GST it is practically IMPOSSIBLE for a business to run without using either Intuit's QuickBooks / QuickPos / QuickFuel, or MYOB Accounting / Premier / etc.
Most of these companies are not in a position to switch to linux until these products can work under linux. (Whether native or emulation)
The only real way for them to switch to linux ? When they have approximately a 10pc peer network that can be moved to a Terminal Server + Linux Clients + rdesktop.
This is only a recent option as Quickbooks & MYOB only just recently started 'officially' supporting terminal server.
The problem here, You are still throwing approximately $4k (AUD) at microsoft to enable your clients to run a free OS *sigh*
Games may drive alot of home users, Corporates can consider porting / developing Linux native products. Small business Dont care about games or OS (windows or linux) *primarily* and only wish to Be Safe(tm) on the internet/email and run their accounting software.
I know that Dosbox is a great way to get older DOS games running on XP. Im sure their are other projects aimed at providing a more accurate 'DOS' environment for more 'standard' applications.
I just have to say that as much as I loved my commodore 64, I still loved my amiga 500 more! ahh the games, the demo's! was amazing stuff. This article was great as it helped me remember some of my favourite games tunes.
My all time favourite is from the game "Lotus Turbo Challenge 2" and is the 'loader' music.
This is 'mod' / protracker format music as used by the amiga, so maybe not quite so groundbreaking as the c64 and its SID chip were, but it was still brilliant.
So what is your favourite music from the good ol days. ?
Optical Drives and Hard Drives are Not comparable to systems like these, Just look at the specifications.
It is a 300,000 (Yes, Three Hundred THOUSAND) Tape library system. It can hold UP TO 300 Gb per cart.
With a total of 90PetaBytes of storage..
Now, Dont get me wrong, Those lovely little DVD burners are cute at 4-8Gb, But are not even a consideration when talking such large amounts of data. Also I would like to see the projected cost's for a system that can do 90Petabytes of storage to HDD, Would be extraordinarily expensive
Strange, I remember playing 'Burger Time' on my lovely 'Intellivision' game console. Thanx mattell.
Never saw burger time on the c64. A great game that I haven't seen mentioned was Boulder Dash!
If I were serios about making a 100k PURCHASE i would fly to hong kong to personally inspect the goods. The amount you spent on airfare, accomodation etc would easily be worth the cost to avoid disappointment / fraud. For 100K im sure the guy would let you look and test too.
Yeah, well I haven't seen the aliens swarming the torrents.. Only 66 people with incomplete copies ? Come on, Lets put the power of/. to some good use.
And where are all the guys with the beefy bandwidth ? Cmon, Its less than a 1.0Mbit / sec
Actually AMD have provided bang for your buck a hell of a lot longer than that.
I remember the first system I actually saved 4 and purchased myself was a whopping
AMD 386DX40 with co pro,
8mb of ram,
1mb tseng labs et4000,
Sound Blaster Pro 2 (Dual channel 8 bit),
and a 40Mb (Yes Megabyte) Seagate drive.
Was a beast and beat the wimpy 386-33 of the Intel camp by a mile in my extensive game testing *was 13, saved forever to buy that machine...* and still have oh so fond memories
I have to agree that this is a great idea. I encountered this feature about a month ago when I went shopping for a new managed hosting plan. The sales staff were informative, Responsive and most importantly, Literate in their topic. I got excellent advice and pricing immediately and feel that this shows a level of commitment that more companies need to persue.
Im sure if dell had sales staff helping customers with their choices (eg, you want to do video editing, you need firewire and a big harddrive, see model XXX, you want to have a robust reliable desktop machine, see raid on model xx) then more customers would be happy to purchase from such a faceless organisation. I know as a small retailer I can beat out a dell quote easily even when I am far more expensive JUST because I can ask more questions and provide a better system quote.
What ive noticed is an improved commitment to the customer. Since they have taken over 'compaq' HP have done tremendous things with their website with regards to drivers and downloads. It wasn't that long ago that as soon as a HP product fell out of warranty / production cycle they would no longer allow you to 'download for free' the drivers for said product. You had to buy their 'cd' version at a ridiculous price.
How about this, I dont believe Intel's FUD because I build both Intel and AMD systems. Ive Benchmarked two 'similiar' systems and an AMD 2600+ does indeed out perform a P4 2.6Ghz chips. It also cos'ts nearly HALF the price here in AU
The same can be done with a small light globe.
The basic principle is to create a antennae to catch 'radio' waves. Attaching two pieces of wire to the contacts on the globe. They must be positioned to be opposite each other and think o a 'T' shape like a TV antennae. U then just trim them down till you 'tune' the globe in to a strong enough signal to light it.
On a similar note I 'heard' of a story about a plan to build a nation wide radio station in Africa using just one powerful centrally located antenna. Worked great till the local around the station realised that you could power you home from the signal strength they used. My only problem is I am unsure if this is an 'urban legend' or not.
It amazes me when I keep hearing people rave about the hauppage PVR line of capture cards. Here in australia, if you buy WHOLESALE from the ONLY authorised distributor, A hauppage PVR 350 cost's $440 + TAX (that is $484 cost price) Add 20-25% markup for retail pricing and it is getting AWFULLY expensive. Compare this to the price of other hardware ? Athlon XP 2000+ CPU ($90 + TAX) Epox 8K9A7I m/b (kt400A chipset) $84 + tax, 256Mb ddr (66+ tax) now that is $240 + tax ($264) I also can then hook up TWO Brooktree based tuner for about $50 + tax each.... EG i can build a WHOLE computer with Gigahertz of power or I can have a pvr350.. Kinda makes them WAAAAAY overpriced. Seeing as an Athlon 2600+ system can encode DIVX at 25fps I am sure it can encode Multiple streams in simpler MPEG2.
Now, if you like to download stuff in an environment that kinda reminds me of the ol audiogalaxy days I strongly recommend you try out Suprnova.org.
Obviosly this is still subjective to riaa 'snooping' as the clients dont appear to support ip range banning, but since they are Open source, anyone can be free to implement any sort of riaa spoofing/protection.
Argh, after reading through all these post's I cannot believe that the most obvios complaint has not been raised.. Photoshop can be a HUGE memory and CPU cycle hog, especially when dealing with 1200dpi images and such. It just HAS to use alot of memory and cpu to do the calculations. What I do not want is photoshop wasting time on the calculations that must be necessary to 'currency recognise'
Who in their right mind wants a bloated load of SPYWARE that does a thousand little checks to see if you are behaving yourself. Cmon, this is a form of spying, PSCS is spying on my image content to ensure that it conforms..
Well if their is a 10mb limit on files, just split the files into 10mb chunks, combine when needed.
Why is it that we are still seeing site /.ed ? Coral P2P cache system seems to something quite effective and is easy enough to use.
Ubuntu Review using Coral Cache
So how about everyone stop trying to load the master link and use this one, then we all will get to see

From my experience they are ALL really expensive. Couple of hundred an hour is CHEAP if its only a few hours a week.

Not sure if it's your intention.
But are you saying that 'apt-get' is that fat older lady that lives downstairs and that 'Click-n-Run' is the hot young call girl ?
Yeah, well I haven't seen the aliens swarming the torrents.. Only 66 people with incomplete copies ? Come on, Lets put the power of /. to some good use.
And where are all the guys with the beefy bandwidth ? Cmon, Its less than a 1.0Mbit / sec
ONLY if you get their crappy "ad-supported pro" version.
I just download the free basic codec, and I can encode files fine. I use divx5 + lameMP3 to get fantastic

Ive seen kernel panic: Food Fight!!! gave me a laugh even tho the system was dying
pipedot.org -> isnt that site already taken ? ooops, no it's smokedot.org now all we need is bongdot.org and were done!

You could have provided a link to that hosting company offering $150 a month for a TB.
Some people would find it interesting

As im sure alot of /.'s are aware their is a program out there called Bittorrent.
My preferred client is Bittorrent++.
