Gay? I was responding to a post mentioning gender. Did not realise you were talking about gays. My point was that men and women are biologically different, and no amount of "rights" will change that. It was a Monty Python reference, in case you missed that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?...
Adoption is almost extinct around here, aside from relatives of orphans, partly because of legal abortion, and partly because of birth-parents rights (so a chain of foster homes instead - "rights" can be bad for others. )
Yeah, we've seen presidents like Lincoln being the go-to example that have done things that aren't too constitutional.
Lincoln went to war, killing a million people (out of a 31m population), rather than letting some states cecede (who would have come crawling back in a decade or two when their economy failed). That is something I hope Trump does not emulate when California votes for independence.
Does this do actual backups like Apple's time-machine?
Or just another cloud service like Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive, etc etc. , bundled while a standard 1TB HDD?
Because a mirror is quite useless if you want to recover an old version of a document, or those photos you accidentally deleted 3 months ago. You still need to do real backups.
A shame Slashdot can't find a more interesting way to monetise the site.
The information won't get there any quicker; X-rays don't yet travel faster than light.
Do you make the same pedantic comment every time somebody talks about "high-speed internet"? In communications terms, speed is bits-per-second. You are thinking of latency, not speed.
Bush should have gotten it, since he toppled the Taliban by the end of November or mid December.
Does not look like much of an achievement from here. Not that I think any other president would have succeeded in either invasion either. Give the award to GWH Bush for taking intelligent advice to contain and _not_ invade neighbouring Iraq.
The Taliban is alive and well, held back from Kabul only by an unsustainable flow of cash from the US to local warlords.
Average pay was $40K. That's damn good money for a job that doesn't even require a high school education.
Good money for a delivery van in the city. Not so good if you are working long-haul - long hours away from home & family. In a wealthy country like the US, $40k ought to be the minimum full-time wage, in a job where you need reliable safety-conscious people.
And why should "stupid" people be treated as an underclass and paid badly? Might as well start paying people according to their height or skin colour.
> as much water as there is in Michigan's Lake Superior,
So what is that? Aboutr 40% the volume of Lake Superior? More than Minnesota's part, but less than Canada's? Or has Trump annexed the whole lake already?
No, you don't have enough money to pay us for that.
Sure they do. Give us a mere billion dollars, and we take Trump as Prime Minister. Thirty seconds later, the ruling conservative party calls for a leadership spill and elects a new leader. Or the Governor General can sack him and call a new general election. Fortunately we Aussies have ways of getting rid of dangerous and incompetent leaders without an impeachment circus.
Many Australian have been wanting to change from being a monarchy to a republic with a directly elected head of government. Trump's election has killed any chance of that for a generation.
Sadly the current law in Norway is that he gets extradited unless he risks capital punishment. Most countries are the same,
There are a whole bunch of conditions for extradition. It has to be a serious offence in both countries. In Australia we have a bunch of objections that the court might be asked to rule on, including "a person’s extradition is sought for a political or military offence".
But of course the Australian gov't would turn him right over. We've had innocent Australian citizens sitting in Guantanamo for years without help. Mamdouh Habib was finally released without charge, and David Hicks was tortured and offered "plead guilty and get released, otherwise stay locked up in Cuba". Australia did nothing for him.
Even if you can't be bothered to make up a decent excuse (I was too sick), the fine is only $20. Postal voting is easy. People are mostly happy with the system. Voting is often done at primary schools, with cake stalls and sausage sizzles for fund-raising. Ballots are counted on-site after closing, then sent off to secure storage in case a recount is called.
No ID needed. The system is set up to show that fraud is not happening, rather than trying to physically prevent it.
despite the media declaring the majority of people was against it
UK has the same problem as US: the biggest challenge with polls is in guessing who will actually turn up to vote. In Australia, with compulsory voting attendance, the polls have been far more accurate. (And it makes politicians more moderate, trying to capture the average voter, instead of firing up their base.)
And Republicans won the next Congress, so say bye bye to the TPP (good).
I was talking about the current congress, before Trump can veto. But Republicans already have majorities. That will not change. I thought the conservatives were supposed to be traditionally pro-business / "free trade" and the liberals protectionist.
Will the new Congress rule the US, or will they be a rubber-stamp like the Supreme Soviet? The precedent of rule by executive order, much increased by Obama, is very disturbing.
What does 'cis' even mean, besides Computer Information Systems?
Its kind of a nerdy political joke. In organic chemistry, cis- is the opposite of trans- .
Fad?
Palm sold tens of millions of units over more than a decade. They were eventually killed by the smartphone.
The Apple ][ sold 6 million. The Newton somewhat fewer.

The hate speech was in claiming people to be inferior ...
What does that have to do with hate? Most people don't hate their inferiors.
not entitled to the same rights as the rest of us because of their skin color or gender.
Whats the point of having the right to have babies if you don't have a womb?

who modded the troll up?
It's called using leverage to make oneself rich. It's why Trump's a billionaire and you're well... not.
Not as rich as Vladimir Putin or Hosni Mubarak, but he's working on it.
We can try banning religion just as soon as the War on Drugs is won.
Canada is too close
A good point.
It's like the late Weimar Republic creating a backup in Austria.
isnt canada still technically ruled by the queen of england??
The Queen does not rule. She reigns.
The technical challenges were mostly solved decades ago. Since then it has just been political.

They'll give it to anyone unless he happens to be a Republican achiever that year.
Achiever? I'm not sure you quite get what the "award" is for. Past "winners" include Hitler, Stalin, and even Henry Kissinger.
From what I recall, President Bush never got it.
HW got it, and W twice. You mean Jeb?

Some people still consider old-fashioned concepts of moral principles to be sometimes more important than diplomatic pragmatism.

I have observed that liberals tend to be idealists, conservatives realists.
Me too, but it depends where you live. Certainly does not apply in the US bible belt.

(by the way, I personally hope the TPP fails.)
