Early adopters of the 360 will welcome the chance to continue to play their faves on newer hardware. Over time, of course, as upgraded games appear, the older games will sit on the shelf.

Maybe MS hasn't said anything definitive one way or the other means they're still working on the emulator and won't know much until later? Maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part.

  13. Re:ELOGICFAULT on Providers Ignoring DNS TTL? · · Score: 1

Sorry to disappoint, but no. I controlled the old nameservers, and they were updated with the new info after the cutover. Beforehand, their TTLs were also dropped to 2 hours well in advance of the changeover. I even killed and restarted nscd on them (Solaris 8 boxen), after the cutover, too.

BTW, AOL wasn't the worst offender - some other semi-national ISP was.

  14. Re:ELOGICFAULT on Providers Ignoring DNS TTL? · · Score: 2, Interesting

There are enough places (ISPs, like AOL), where TTL is completely ignored.

Case in point. A former high-traffic client (in the million hits per day range) did an 'inverse outsource' and reclaimed their site and corresponding domains. To prep for the move, the client migrated their DNS service to their new servers and changed the NS records with NetSol, several weeks in advance. They dropped their TTL down to two hours around that time. Early on the day of the cutover, changed the DNS records to point to the new location/IP range. That should've been enough, yes?

Well, they got a lot of complaints on the first few days that the site wasn't working. We ended up having to put create some URL redirection, ising the new IPs, on their old servers, and it took over two weeks for the traffic to die down. It took that long for some companies to flush their cache completely.

Companies are breaking the 'rules' and there's really not much you can do about it.

I hear ya. I'm sure someone knows the answer, but I'm convinced that the most recent episode was written AFTER the cancellation announcement. I think that gave the writers the freedom to try writing a TOS-style ending, right down to the the forced "oooo, the Vulcan made a funny. No I didn't!" epilogue.

    OY!

  16. Why is it on Hitchhiker's Movie is Bad, says Adams Biographer · · Score: 1

That people insist movies must be direct adaptations of subject matter (aka books in this case) and nothing else will suffice, and anything that doesn't is just trash. The LOTR Trilogy was about as close as you're gonna get, and yet people were furious that they left out a lot of material (Tom Bombadil, purging of the Shire).

Quite frankly, I welcome the new material.

You're probably the exception, but there are a lot of people who can't walk and chew gum simultaneously, let alone drive and speak on a phone.
