  1. Re:The article is horribly written. on Two Versions of XBox360 Confirmed? · · Score: 1

Yes, but a gig of flash ROM could easily be integrated to the motherboard, and would be pretty cheap. I think that could be done for under $10 a board.

  2. The article is horribly written. on Two Versions of XBox360 Confirmed? · · Score: 5, Interesting

I hate how the article mentions the the low end XBOX 360 will not have backwards compatability, but the premium version will have Microsoft Web TV. WTF, why didn't you mention wheter or not the premium XBOX will be backwards compatible. The reason why the XBOX 360 is not going to use a hard drive is because hard drives are expensive compared to most of the other components of an XBOX. Check out Newegg, you cannot find a 3.5 in hard drive for under $50, no matter how small the capacity. Most current games do not take advantage of the hard drive very well. Only a handful of games have released downloadable content which gets stored on the drive. Also, if you are constantly swapping games in and out of the XBOX, you won't be taking advantage of the XBOX caching files on the hard drive, and therefore you would'nt notice a decrease in the load times. Seriously, most of the people who take advantage of a hard drive in the XBOX, are the modders who use a larger hard drive to store the games. The XBOX 360 will come with enough flash RAM to store game saves, and for those who really want the downloadable content and improved load times for one game can purchase the premium version.

When the first Playstation came out, most games were $40, but a few premium games demanded $50. Now you can hardly find a new game for $40 on the PS2 and the XBOX. Looks like its back to the cartridge days and the $60 games.

I hope they'll wait for KDE 3.4.1. The .1 releases have traditionally been translation releases (unless something has changed recently).

It's rather frustrating to do translations, and then notice that they are never packaged in some Linux distributions, because the packagers don't have patience to wait for the translation release. Other than English-speaking people use Linux too, you know.

Well, probably most of the translations get in time for 3.4, so the problem isn't that big.

Yeah, but since English is the most common language in the PC using world, why in the hell should we have to wait for somebody to translate it for all of you hethens that do not speak English? I say include it as long as its relatively stable. As soon as it is translated, release the translations. Having the whole world wait for the distro to be translated into slqkssavaish or whatever is the newest Eastern European language is rather pointless.

I knew this guy that raised about $3000 several years in a row to spend two weeks a year in Honduras helping build houses or churches for the people there. I never could figure out what the $3000 went towards since they got a bulk rate on really cheap airfare. The tickets cost less than $300 and they lived like peasants while they were there. (1 minute showers in lukewarm water and really horrible food, while living in tents) For the money he would raise, he could have gotten a construction team of probably 20 to 50 Honduran men to work on those churches. I always knew there was somebody that was making a killing off this "charity".

  17. This is different. on Xbox Users Too Impatient for Class Action · · Score: 5, Informative

The original XBOX DVD drives have a very short lifespan. This is because M$ wanted them to ONLY read DVD-ROMs and CD-ROMs (probably to stop piracy with the system). That just wasnt possible, but they were able to suceed in not getting them to read almost all CD-R's and most DVD-R's. Now, because this laser is so finely tuned to read ONLY those types of media, when it goes through a few months of normal use that wouldn't phase a normal drive, the XBOX drive is no longer able to read data. I think this decision will cost Microsoft dearly. All those XBOX owners with faulty drives arent going to want an XBOX2 as unreliable as the first one.

I think Xerox makes the best color laser printers. I know those are still too expensive for most of us, but the college where I work probably has purchased at least 100 HP B&W laser printers, but we have purchased only Xerox color laser printers. Why? SPEED!!! For $2000 (at the time) we could get an HP that did 6 pages a minute of a Xerox that did 16. Do the math, and guess what we went with. I must say the HP were a little bit more difficult to jam (I only notice it on the Xerox when we print 500+ pages at once), but that slight edge in reliability is not worth the decrease in speed.
