What's funny to me is the warm-fuzzy the nonparenting parents out there are going to get when they register their childrens' one and only email addresses with this. With the country finally turning towards parents to actually do some parenting, isn't this just the solution they need?
"Why, my little Amy can't use myspace... I've registered mylittlepumpkin@hotmail.com with them. What? No, I don't think mylittlepumpkin1@hotmail.com is her.... mylittlepumpkin2@hotmail.com? Can't be."
Bartender, a round of warm-fuzzy's for everyone on me!
The Paul Graham quote did fail to mention some of the genius Harvard-MBA-type decisions like with drkoop.com, which had no revenue stream. They really did fit the 1) make a website, 2) ???, 3) profit! model. We bought some of their servers for ten cents on the dollar when I was still in Austin.
I'd work to pass a bill allowing for the "None of the Above" item on all ballots.
I'd work toward term limits, and limit the retirement benefits of politicians who have served.
Of course, no senator would want to vote himself/herself out of cushy retirement and a cushy job, so I suppose I would have to release the flying monkeys as enforcers. More likely, though, is the notion of nobody voting me in.
HR departments typically consider the "cost of employment" of a person to be roughly twice their actual salary (factoring in insurance, time off, tax/ss, etc). So I'd say the original $500k is probably spot on.
As a contractor (I'm fulltime now) I had all sorts of bad bosses. One in particular used to pick on anyone who disagreed with him, and try to rally the rest of the team on his side and against said employee. It got to the point where the disagreer wasn't invited to the group lunches, and just made very uncomfortable.
This guy would rather ruin someones career as well, rather than fire or transfer them out. At one point, I was the target, even though I'd seen the cause/result relationship (I've always been the tell-you-what-I-think-rather-than-what-you-want-to -hear type). That actually gave me more time to work on the problems at hand. When the project was finished, I left the software more manageable, faster, and more solid than when I got there.
Another example was the boss who brought me on contract-to-hire, only there was never really a hire. She strung me along, while her two fulltime programmers did absolutely nothing all day. When I spent two months rewriting the application that calculated fulltime employee bonuses at the end of the year, I decided my plan there.
At the beginning of the following year, I asked her one more time about the full-time position, and she continued along the "I'm working on it" line. So I waited until she began her conversion from a working HR system to SAP-HR, and walked out the door.... being not only her only qualified programmer, but the only one on her team that understood the data in the legacy system and the conversions that would be necessary.
Shitty of me? Yes. Did it make me feel a little better? Also yes.
Nice find there... the spin in the titled was evidently used to try to incite the usual slashdot emotions.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with a boycott, and I applaud them for using that route rather than a ban, as the title suggested. Excellent use of their first amendment rights.
I don't, however, believe games such as this make for violent children, or "numb" them to the idea that killing people is ok.
Now, as I log out of SWG, I'll be grabbing my lightsaber and taking out anyone without an imperial emblem on their chest that I come across.
Yeah, it seems more like he's trying to get a job somewhere. I can name several languages (not much about programming models in there) and speak almost intelligently about all of them. How much vacation time do I get?
It's not moot, in that it proved one of the parent's points incorrect... that being that it had not had a final rejection.
Now, given that it had more than one final rejection, I'm going to have to spend some time finding out what this new definition of "final" actually is.
This isn't a final rejection, and certainly isn't as serious as the AppleInsider article makes it sound.
But Platt's playlist application also has a rejection history. It received an NFR on 17 November 2002, and a more serious Final Rejection on 14 June 2004. After further documentation was received, and extension granted, the application received another NFR on 11 December last year.
I don't know that it jeopardizes Apple in any way, but not only is it actually a final rejection, it's not their first final rejection (whatever that means).
Here, we do whatever we can in the name of corporate profit
There's some truth to that statement. Any retirement planner will let you know that, while US inflation averages 2-3%, college inflation averages 7%. It doesn't take a math major (yes, that was me trying to be funny) to figure out that those numbers mean fewer and fewer people will be able to afford to go to college.

I never played EQ, but as a SWG player, I can attest to the staying power. SWG is horribly bugged, and SOE's dev team makes me embarassed to be a programmer, yet I continue to play...
That's what keeps me lazy on the vcr and dvd players, my cable box is set automatically too. I suppose if it didn't have a pvr built into it I'd consider setting the other clocks, but why bother?
Doh! I looked right over the editor line since it was CSS... nice.
I also didn't scroll down far enough to see what you described. Maybe his 13 year old is running GIMP?

It seems they've removed the following line from their page source
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 4.0">
Only more laughable is their "Stationary adapter, which is connected to the optical fiber and electrical cables" shown here

which looks deceptively like an 1/8" stereo connector.

Maybe it's better to have no vision than a completely distorted one? Not that I speak from experience or anything...

I tend not to agree.

I thought we were still playing beta...
Glad I don't work for you.
Nice one.... we should make a list and put it on one of those cheesey websites :D
Oh no, I've worked with you before!
Yeah, it seems more like he's trying to get a job somewhere. I can name several languages (not much about programming models in there) and speak almost intelligently about all of them. How much vacation time do I get?
I've seen a lot of tortellini coding lately, where all the programmers basically run around in circles.

Try reading this post, or this post, maybe they'll make you smile a little.
That's strage, as I just tested one this morning in FireFox, and it worked fine. When I check the source code, it's all converted to js.

Am I the only one whose VCR clock is currently flashing 12:00 anyway?
