What happens if Napster goes bust (again)? Where's your $180/year then? Say you keep your subscription going for 5 years and then Apple (or some other subscription company even) wins out and Napster goes out of business? That's $900 (assuming no price increases which is unlikely) down the drain. I say Apple will win for this reason. And even if they don't, at least I know I will still have my songs if iTunes folds. With Napster, if they go under, so does my music and my invested money. All down the drain.
Oh, and not to mention, I like being able to burn my songs into regular audio CDs. WMA sucks for this reason alone. Their DRM is worse than Apple's.
So you're saying that the information in wikipedia isn't false information being spread?
There are no credentials needed to write or edit for Wikipedia. This is its Achilles' heel. It may have some "experts" happen by from time to time but the number of opinionated schmucks who take time to write/edit for it far outnumber those few authoritative ones. So therefore, it's watered down with opinions that cannot be backed by credentials. You don't know who's writing what you're reading nor do you know if it's going to be "corrected" tomorrow and the information you've just read will then be "outdated."
So go on and imagine that all the real encyclopedias are being paid off by "$$$" corporations and the gov't. Meanwhile, Wikipedia can be your postmodern bastion of all relative truth.

3. Bluetooth support - a wwireless keyboard and mouse would look very nice thank you.
Are you saying that it doesn't have Bluetooth? Because it does. It's a build-to-order option. Or are you saying that they should offer a wireless keyboard and mouse for it? Because they do. It's all there. They definitely didn't miss the wireless boat with this one. You can also add Airport Extreme (802.11g) to it. It's perfect.
how about more than 3 paragraphs per page? it's no fun trying to load one page after another only to get 3 paragraphs each time. especially when it's on its way to getting slashdotted.
It's called capitalism. You know, protecting your product and your profit margins. You and your commie/socialist kin would like to think that some utopian system exists to provide you with "choices" regardless of whether or not there is a cost to the bottom line of the company that offered you up the initial "choice." If you didn't want a closed system, you shouldn't have bought an iPod. That's like people complaining about not being able to see the entire Windows source code after paying for a XP license. Gimmeabreak.
And you say that they're screwing the customer? How? They sold you the iPod with an understanding that you were limited to the iTunes Music Store. And now you are upset when a hack is no longer availabe to allow you to bypass the iTMS/iPod system? It's a HACK by a company that is trying to undermine Apple and cut in on their turf. It should be illegal, not a celebrated "choice" for the customer. Do you think Rob Glaser viewed it as a "choice" for the customer? Heck no, he didn't! He viewed it as another last-ditch effort to save his worthless, sinking company, Real Networks.
I don't think allowing Real to bypass their DRM technology can be called a "feature" of the iPod. More like a bug. Apple squashed a bug and its name was Real. Real has a history of being nothing more than a pest to the industry anyhow. Why should this be any different?
This seems wrong to me. Do we really want a world in which every aspect of human activity is licensed or paid for? Sports is culture and community; we shouldn't commercialize that space.
Please tell me you don't really think that professional sports wasn't commercialized before this. Uh, the very idea of professional sports is that it's... commercial. If you want non-commercial sports, keep to college sports and your local rec league. It's pretty dillusional to think that pro sports isn't going to be commercial. By your line of arguing, the Super Bowl should be broadcast by every network and without commercial interruption.
I just want Verizon to buy out Alltel. Alltel has this magic hold on some people in the Southeast and if Verizon would just go ahead and swallow them up, I could call EVERYONE i know for free on the Verizon InNetwork.
Verizon's InNetwork is the best in my opinion. Free calls all the time to Verizon customers. What we need is a monopoly by Verizon so that all my calls will be free.:o)
People don't carry their desktops with them when they jog.
Seriously... it's like a cell phone or PDA more than it is a computer. At least in that regard. iPods take a lot of abuse. A lot more than your PC ever will.
where do you get the extra $500 from?
http://www.apple.com/ibook/
That's $999 for a machine with 802.11g built-in, a rock-solid OS, Firewire, USB 2.0, a great mobile GPU, DVD/CD-RW, iLife '04, and craploads more. Not to mention 6 hour battery life (real-world by my own tests) and a lot lighter than that HP or Dell you're comparing it to.
So where's the catch? I see none.
"box set" being sold with the ipod is also available from itunes for 149 dollars....for over 400 songs.
The U2 iPod doesn't come WITH the boxset but, rather, with a $50 coupon towards the $150 boxset. Making the price only $100 for over 400 songs... if you've bought the U2 iPod.
The U2 iPod is only a gimmick to get press attention for the most part. Sure, there are enough die-hard U2 fans to buy them up but the real money for Apple is in the publicity. And they couldn't pick a better time than now, right before the holiday shopping season kicks off into high gear. Very nice marketing.
"The radio airwaves will never be safe again. The RadioSHARK adds an AM/FM radio to any Mac or PC -- but that's just the beginning."
This, from the very top of the main product page, is what I was referencing. Looks like it has "suitable" drivers to me. I basically think this thing got misfiled or else "nifty" new technology is now synonymous with "Apple.";)
show me one instance where i spewed anger and name calling? or are you just reading too much into it? Oh, and don't expect me to respond to you again unless you can stop being an anonymous coward.
All these anon coward posts are stupid. You can go around all you want holding each others limpies, but you're both still just stupid. UTD may be screwed up but that doesn't explain away how Slashdot is constantly trying to drum up support for some phantom cause without presenting all the facts.
By stating that you have microwaves at UTD, you point out a hypocrisy there. You are correct in that they should fix their issues rather than tell the students they can't have their own networks.
But this still doesn't change the fact of my post that Slashdot takes one example of a poor network and starts screaming "YOUR RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED! YOUR RIGHTS ARE BEING VIOLATED! STUDENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY STAND UP AND PROTEST!" It's stupid and poor journalism.
I didn't mention cell phones when I said airlines. I said airlines can ban whatever they want. It's not an FCC issue. It may involve the FAA but that only reinforces my point. The FCC isn't the only one that gets to make regulations, contrary to what the original Slashdot article infers. And I notice you didn't counter my point about cell phones in hospitals. Perhaps b/c you couldn't. If you want to keep swallowing everything Slashdot editors feed you, go right ahead. But I'm not a lemming. Your inability to speak without throwing out anger and inappropriate language (along with the troll AC following you) proves you need to change your meds and chill out.
Good one, boys. Just spreading more FUD, you are. This is a non-issue.
The University is simply putting a policy in place to cover themselves. Big deal.
This is *NO* different than the thousands of campuses who in the past have told students they cannot use microwaves in their dorm rooms. It's just another device. Don't make it into one of these "your individual rights are being violated" issues. When you agree to pay tuition and enroll, you agree to abide by their standards. If you don't like it, transfer. The "you're not the FCC" line is ridiculous as well. By that logic, airlines couldn't tell you what you can and can't use on their planes either. And hospitals couldn't make you turn off your cell phones.
Seriously, someone stop the FUD.
Those that invent and lead the industry tend to make the headlines, as opposed to the followers and imitators.
Then maybe you should wait a year and a half again before you upgrade.
Oh, and not to mention, I like being able to burn my songs into regular audio CDs. WMA sucks for this reason alone. Their DRM is worse than Apple's.
Since dictionary.com has found a way to get around Safari's pop-up blocker, I have no use for them. Glad Google has thought the same.
It's your right online to know how many times Slashdot can run a story before you notice.

Same problem here. Repairing permissions didn't help. Also, DNS resolving takes a lot longer. Very long.

MoL only runs on PPC hardware.
How is this an "Apple Story?" It's clearly PC or Mac, not just a Mac device. What's the reason for putting this in the Apple section of Slashdot?
Grouchy Old Cripple in Atlanta
The former makes me split my side most any day and twice on Sundays. Very bright for someone his age.
The latter is terribly underrated and deserves to be more widely known. He's like Neal Boortz with twice the brain power and ten times the wit.
