I had a machead friend try and trash me for my use of linux. We were talking about some obscure bug (try "grep foo/dev/zero" at the command line; on Linux it gets an out-of-memory error but on OSX it'll keep going) and his comment was something like "LOLS APPLE SURE DOES PATCH THEIR SOFTWARE GOOD!"
My reply? "At least every time an insignificant bug in the Linux kernel is found and fixed, I don't have to pay $129 for the patch."
I found some stuff. Apparently the study was done by a guy named John B Calhoun. Rats were allowed to breed un-checked in a limited area with infinte food.
Right on. I could go on about the whole decline-of-morals in general, but something, be it bureaucracy, advance of the communication age, or just plain-old "there's too many people" bearing down on people's nerves. I'm inclined to believe the latter. I remember somewhere that they did a study wherein they had a "city" of rats, and when the population density got too high they all went completely batty and started devouring their own young and whatnot. Not that I'm prophesizing cannibalism... however the "I'm just another face in the crowd so I think I'll lash out at other people" mentality seems to be creeping up on society in general.
Might I also reccomend Microsoft Antispyware? I wrote a review and I think it's wonderful. I was pretty shocked to find something with "Microsoft" on it that also seemed to work, but in my honest opinion (note: I'm something of an amature) it seems to work quite nicely. It caught things that Spybot, Ad-aware and McAfee didn't catch. And removed them in such a manner that they didn't "regenerate" (as MS-AS put it) as most spyware does.
Seriously a nice piece of software.
I wish. However most end-users don't really "get" a lot of this: whenever a site renders poorly due to IE's mishandling of standards, the usual reply is "durr, looks like this turd doesn't know how to operate a website, I should make fun of it in my xanga"
Mod parent up. Checks, bills, cards... all need to be checked because 99% of the time, the cashier doesn't know you personally and therefore has no account for your trustworthiness. Guess what? White people in nice clothes can print fake money, too.
Ya know, it's cool and all to be the guy that hates Christians, but what kind of a hissy-fit would people be throwing if IMAX decided to show, for example, "Amazing Grace" (http://www.monergismbooks.com/amazing2112.html) or some other "fundie" film? Science doesn't always have the answer. It might not be clear why we're against abortion; then again, nobody really understood why some people were so hesitant to board the Hindenburg.
At my school they left out Pinball, but curiously opted to leave in Solitare, Hearts and Minesweeper.
Also, using Novell to prevent access to "My Documents," which is a brain-boggler to say the least.
No joke. At Kroger, ask them to look up your plus card by phone number. 817-555-5555 works just great. Add your area code prefix for fun, maybe it works, maybe it doesn't.
Yeah, but if all US farmers started growing crops exclusivley for the production of biodiesel, then food costs would skyrocket, as we'd have to start importing our food. Fuel costs would go down, but food costs would rise more than enough to effectivley ruin any benefit of cheap fuel. The poor would start dying off pretty fast. Most would rather be stuck at home with a full refridgerator than being able to go anywhere on an empty stomach.
You're right, though. Biodiesel does look promising.
Actually, a good question.
Some hardware I'm not too interested in hacking (digital camera, cable box, refridgerator) but for something so computer-related I would be disappointed if I couldn't choose what OS to use, or change runtime variables other than what pretty menus allow for.
Disappointed enough to prevent me from buying it? Well, that depends how much I like the OS. Also seeing a decrease in price:-)
Anybody ever see, much less be affected by, "zinc whiskers"?
In the one or two times I've seen anything resembling this, I always thought it was metal shavings from the assembly process. That, or clever dust:-)
Is it just me or do these issues only seem to happen when some no-name corporation "remembers" that they somehow invented a wide-sweeping technology? It seems that when legitmate corporations enforce patent/copyright for things they actually invented from the get-go, nobody questions it. Is it human spirit to "take what you can get when they're not looking" or are these bozos just out to make a cheap buck?
What of the effects of the malfunctioning power supply? From what I gather it powers the gyroscopes/stabilizers for the lab module. That sounds pretty important, not just for the "keep it in space" effect but also the tendency for malfunctioning electronics to drain on the sources. Is waiting for a fixed suit going to complicate things more than a quick "duct tape" fix?
Why do hardware manufacturers not release drivers for Linux (or for that matter any other non-Windows/Macintosh platform)? It would seem that the idea would be, more supported plaforms = wider customer base = more profit. I can understand how development might be an issue... but considering OS'es like Linux are open source, it would seem that development would be at least marginally easier and cheaper. Has anyone written/emailed/asked a HW maker this question? What was their reply?
They always give me Cingular numbers.
And the network is conveniently down at exactly the time I pick up the handset to dial.
Perhaps I should start asking for her CB radio handle...
