Most dating methods that are used routinely are accurate; that is why they are used. Carbon 14 is typically NOT used for objects older than 45,000 years, when it becomes useless. For older objects, other methods are used.
"Damn right it is. Debian is the distro you install on your mom's computer when you're moving 2000+ miles and don't want to fly home for tech support."
Last week I did just that. I installed it on your mom's compu... Nah, just kidding. But, I did install Debian on a relative's brand new box. He is 79 and was very satisifed. He has been using Debian for several years, and I upgrade once a year.
Why not just outbid the US Gov in a tapping bid? What could the market value be? Stasi and KGB would have needed a saliva bucket next to the bed for this.
This news is food for Slashdot readers! It is my guess that there are more logicians (albeit self taught...) here than at most forums. But, what do I know.
My son was baptized in the same church Descartes (aka Cartesius) was buried.:)
How about integers instead of floating point?

How about integers instead of floating point? Without knowing anything about the code, how would integers perform here? Couldn't a static table with, eg 3600 precalculated angles simulate what you want?
.
This case did not only occur in the UK. Sweden bought 18 million doses, to a population of 9 million at price of about 140,000,000 USD. However, not all have been used as some refused to get it and others cannot. It is quite likely that Glax-Smith-Klein used the situation, but... What if the governments hadn't done it? And people had died as flies... Hindsights...
'It's foolhardy to use this statistic to infer that American firms are losing ground to foreign competitors because with patents, it's important to consider quality, as well as quantity.'
That was the most foolhardy ostrich behavior I have heard of. Of course it matters. Look at Europe, we had a brain drain to the American market accumulating over the last century. The Americans may well end up as us, but now conceding not to us, but to East Asia. And, don't forget that Europe is coming back, too, with a stronger, more unified agenda than ever.
Watch out for this trend if you care about your future. Only the paranoid survive.

Many old fps had religious content, Rune, Doom etc. But, when it came to making a picture the producers made Doom into some viral attack and in the upcoming Hollywood version of Thor he has been revamped into some super hero. Some religions get more respect in media than others:
Buddhism > Judaism > Christianity > Norse > Profanity > MacOS
For good or bad, I don't know.
Do they mean Linux or the distro?
This is an important distinction here. I never looked at Linux' documentation; didn't even know it had one except the comments in the code.
But, with the bewildering number of distros, I can see the issue there to any newcomer.
I think the cross-licensing of x86 and amd64 technology and antitrust laws have something to do with it, too.
The word "dehydrated" refers to the shrinking apple (no, not Apple). Yet, recall that water was found on the Moon a few months ago. Cool. Huh? :)
So, why doesn't Google publish the Android layer under the GPL licence? After all, it does float on top of Linux, which is GPL.

What?!
"hundreds of millions of lines of code"
I don't believe that number
Just a bogoword from an illiterate.
.
"I'm not a coder. I couldn't create a kernel if my life depended on it."
Huh?! Do what most armchair kernel programmers do here at /., lie about that fact.

"Is this a common problem across all fields?"
Yes!
Still, be picky. Don't choose the one closest to your home town, chose the best.
Use the gratis "Publish or Perish" program by http://www.harzing.com/ to analyze the particular field you are interested in.
Don't go for the 2nd best!!!
"I wonder if this is Apple's secrecy coming to bite them in the ass."
No, bars don't mix with secrecy!
Gizmodo bought a brand new _prototype_ from someone who found it in a bar's bathroom next to some rolled dollar bills and pocket mirrors.
Here was the Gizmodo scoop from some months ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HAXXs4bZuk
Apple need to kick quite a lot of asses. Who's up next?
"So it probably TeX related."
Agreed, it is probably TeX related. So, why on Earth would he use the term "Earth shattering"?! Knuth is not known to self contradictory.

Check out http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ and http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/ With a pinch of salt you can make a relevant decision based on those two, even if Googling around would make your decision even better. .

Despite the success of Avatar, this may be more important for gaming than Hollywood, or? Didn't gaming bypass Hollywood in turnover some time ago?
