    x + 1 = 0 -> x = -1 is the normalized form of this, and it contains neither 0 nor 1, so it only really contains 3 important numbers.

    A) because a research university should be running several flavors of *nix so they can write cross-platform code.

    B) because solaris is often considered the most mature and stable implementation of Unix.

    I think that network protocols are not similar to unmapped genome sequences in that network traffic is metadata and data.

    Genome sequences are much more consistent. It's all data, processed by RNA computers.

    Do you keep your 18 year old children locked up? My cat is more self-actualized than I think you have the capacity to be.

    I would rather have him live a 10 year life in which he was happy and well fed than a 20 year life in which he was locked up safe and sound.

    I had looked it up on dictionary.com, which is what I based my post upon...

    Mathematics is the study of math topics, mathematic is not the singular form of that noun, but an adjective relating to the topic of mathematics. I humbly suggest that you re-read both dictionary.com entries...

    The fact that you grew up in England is only relevant in that that's the way other people there pronounce it that way, which is why I pointed out the middle english (which, I believe, used to be spoken over there) version has no "s" at the end.

    Slightly off topic, but it drives me nuts when people shorten "mathematics" to "maths" (like in the article). It is not a plural that needs to retain the "s", not even in middle english: From Middle English mathematik, from Old French mathematique, from Latin mathmatica, from Greek mathmatik (tekhn), mathematical (science), feminine of mathmatikos, mathematical. See mathematical.

    There was a wise chief petty officer on our boat (submarine) who said this truism:

    If you say you never do it (masturbate), you're a liar. If you say you've never tasted it (your "man chowder"), you're a liar.

    Personally, I have never used bologna or any other food stuffs for such purposes. Nor anyone's ass, in case someone is thinking of clever submarine/navy jokes.

    Why is a book about filesystem design & implementation being reviewed by someone who doesn't have an understanding of the topic?

    Unions are rarely necessary for "competent" people with advanced skills. Unions are more useful in industries where "a body is a body"-- factories, etc.

    Additionally, a large percentage of IT people tend more toward libertarian/objectivist philosophies, which despise labor unions as a tool of incompetence.

    It is accurate. I read the newspapers in the U.S.,and 3 of my best friends at work are from India. I have been regaled with stories of exactly what I cited. So please don't respond to postings unless you know what you're talking about, which you don't.

    Adam and Eve were [supposedly] the first humans, and the last of God's tasks related to the creation of the world. Please recall from the biblical point of view, the earth exists for the purpose of mankind. Adam and Eve are therefore intimately related to the creation of the earth.

    This is stupid. Submarines run on an 18 hour day and still manage to communicate very well with shore communications facilities, which use the standard 24 hour day.

    No, Tolkien stated that he hated allegory. Many people have interpreted that statement to mean that he didn't want to continually argue about the books, and just wanted people to read the books for what they were, not over-analyze them. It does not mean that there was none in the books.

    IEEE is engineering and electronics. No offense, but they don't [necessarily] know anything about operating systems. Most comp & EE engineers don't know jack about programming... They just assume that they do, because engineering is "harder" than programming...
