I don't know what you should be more concerned about; the fact that your site didn't get slashdotted, or the fact that nobody cared enough to see the site. But hey, congrats on surviving a/.ing
"I've attempted to contact several folks over the past couple of years to gather information about the software and who owns it now. "
You're mistaken, your company never owned the code to begin with. So who owns it? SCO claims to, but they'll gladly license it to you for the Limited LOW LOW price of $699!
Really? I would beg to differ. You see, I have played numerous free MUDs, a handful of free graphical MMORPGs, and currently play on an awesome UO shard called Darkenwood. Free gameplay, and unbelievable content. The people who run Darkenwood have added whole new mechanisms to the game. What about NWN? Content is not as expensive as you think it is. Nor is maintaining it said content. The real expense is in managing large numbers of players. But then explain how every other MMORPG that SWG competes with has better content and more players.....AT BETA.
"Regardless, the games "content" has been 0 since the day I got the beta, and it seems like it hasnt gotten any better. Sad really, THIS is that SW MMORPG we get. "
Is it just me, or does that seem to be the general feeling of ANYTHING that has been associated with George Lucas lately? No content for more money than everything else in the same category.
Is there any chance that Redhat can now subpoena them for the mystery code that everybody has allegedly infringed on? And then let the public know what bits of code it is?
" Have you ever heard of Cybernetic Poet? Or any of the music composing artificial intelligences? They regularly produce art which human judges mistake for man-made."
" The rules were clear, nobody forced these guys to participate."
Jesus Christ! I'm not saying anybody forced them to participate! Someone said the same thing last time I brought this up. Everybody who entered knew they were getting screwed. I know this. They knew this. All I'm saying is that I think it would be interesting to see how much money Slashdot and ThinkGeek make off of these tshirts, and compare it to the value of the "prize" that they're giving us. I'm not saying anybody forced them to participate, I'm just calling for a little more transparency here, that's all. So before you declare me a troll, read my post and try to understand what I'm really talking about.
Well, presume they sell for about 17 bucks. That would be 17000 dollars right there. How much do you think the thinkgeek coupon and a couple of free tshirts would be worth? Not 17 grand, I can guarantee you that. I never claimed anybody was going to get rich off of these, but its still a decent chunk of money that nobody would mind seeing a bit more of.
Now if they can just make this sucker small enough, it could be a perfect input device for palm-sized or watch-sized devices. And if they can project a keyboard holographically, why not a screen? Pictures? Video? If they figured out how to do that in a small device, they deserve all the money they'd make off the patent.
Both corporations throw pokeballs into the ring and out pops Daryl and whoever from Redhat. They toss various legal accusations around and defend with evidence. Finally, as SCO looks about beaten, and looks back at Billy Gates to call him back into the pokeball, he notices Gates walking away whistling like he was never a part of it.
This SERIOUSLY isn't a troll post. But one thing that irritates me about this is how little compensation the designers are getting for their work versus how much Thinkgeek will make and how much Slashdot will make on commissions (or maybe its the other way around). What I'd really like to see is how much revenue/profit they've made from these shirts. C'mon guys, you got our designs for dirt cheap, the least you can do is let us know how much more you're getting for this than we are.
You know, my theory always has been that we don't need a mythical world to make a good MMORPG. We just need one to be modeled as realistically as possible after our own. Cities, people, everything. There's so many things people want to do in real life that they can't for various reasons, and this game could be a great outlet for those ideas. I mean, even one full modeled city like NY or Chicago, and have thousands of people in that city. The possibilites would be endless. Add VR gear, and you've got the beginning of the Matrix.
This game would be so much cooler if you could speed it up and watch it in realtime.
On another note though, there used to be a program I used at school, forget the name, which let you setup whole scenes that operated with the laws of physics, it was 2D, and you could have forces, pulleys, whatever. You could make joints between pieces so you could model a human, have them get struck by bullets, etc. You could also make little scenes that you could control on the fly, so you could make a game where you tried to land an airplane for example. Very VERY cool program. Anybody know the name of it? It was for the mac I believe.
I can think of a couple of games they could use to teach sex ed......they might be hentai games, but hey, that'd just give a little added education by teaching kids about how tentacles are a part of japanese culture.
"And despite this lack of sales in record stores, millions of songs created by today's modern artists are downloaded daily - even though they supposedly suck and lack creativity bla bla bla."
Maybe its because now you can preview all of the songs on a CD and realize that only one or two are good and the $20 pricetag is not justified, so people delete the crap, keep the one or two good song, and have no interest in buying the CD. Perhaps this is also why the iTunes Music Service is doing so well.
"Tell me, is it our lazy and self centered students, or our high crime and poverty that make America "the best damn country in the world"? I'm a bit confused here."
No, it is our ability to point out imaginary flaws in other countries while never even considering the possibility that we have some very real flaws of our own.
" I absolutely hate the phone and will do nearly anything to avoid talking on one.
That said, I love shiny things."
Replace phone with drm/RIAA/MPAA/M$/cool-new-orwellian-technology and you've just given the most accurate description of the Slashdot demographic I have ever seen.
"If the MPAA wants to stop the bootlegging, they should just release the DVD at the same time as the movie is in the theaters. Let the market decide how they want to see the film."
Ah, but then they wouldn't be able to milk the movie for all its worth, now would they?
Anybody here never play the original Deus Ex, read Hollywood-quality, and lose any desire whatsoever to look into it.

Ahh, Bill Gates' plan finally begins to take shape.
Sorry, I don't listen to N'Sync.

Except someone else is making a lot of money off your work.
