How much responsibility do the editors have? Nil. Their responsibility is to get readers to increase ad revenue. While I think they would do better at that by being credible, it doesn't look like its hurting them any.
Fortunately, for their concerned readership, we have the moderation system and the strength of hundreds of thousands of nerds with too much time on their hands and lots of paranoia who will research this in depth, and provide the truth when it is obscured. I mean, while I take everything on here with a grain of salt, I give a lot more trust to those modded +5 with supporting links than I do to the editors who post dupes, stories without links, and incorrect/misleading information in their summaries.
Not only that, but the main thing that I think has driven many players away (myself included) is how poor of a FPS the game actually is.
People play FPS because they like the skill involved. That means living and dying by headshots, etc. In Planetside, you have the "cone of fire" which basically kills any skill involvement whatsoever.
That alone made me not want to play. I loved the concept, and I hope someone comes along and does it right, but Planetside definitely did NOT do it right.
While I agree that this is hardly "Your Rights Online", I do think it is relevant to Slashdot since it deals with geek toys possibly becoming illegal, as well as solving a mystery that was most certainly appropriate for Slashdot (the original laser pointer hitting planes story).
So, I agree this is a bit hyped up, but its nice to have some closure on the story.
I thought it was a cool concept the way they worked it into America's Army. Now Battlefield 2 is going to have a similar system.
For those not familiar, you gain persistent server stats, and the better you are, the higher rank you have, and the more class/weapon options you have.
For a game with a "commander" position such as Battlefield 2, I think this is absolutely essential as it does a lot to prevent fucktards from ruining the game. I just wish they'd do something like that for vehicles. I mean, I can fly through the middle of the carrier in Desert Combat in a jet upside down...no easy feat...and I wish I had something that let me flaunt my skill a bit (hey, everybody likes to be recognized). And while part of me wishes the requirements to fly planes and such were really high to let me fly more often...I realize that there are times when your team is screwed unless the last remaining noob can get airborn and get his ass over to a flag to capture it.
Get one of those handheld BAC detectors. Have contestants be tested at the end of each round and the first one to reach.2 while still being able to answer questions wins! (And gets free medical care!)
I would recommend that any Slashdotter considering going into a tech related field do something at college to brush up on their people skills, whether it be by joining lots of clubs, taking a negotiation class, or even *gasp* taking a marketing class to learn how to communicate to an audience.
As an advertising/marketing student, the most important thing i've learned is "KNOW YOUR AUDIENCE". It is a philosophy that applies to every aspect of your life, since you always have an audience. If you know your audience, you know how to approach things with them, and can get better results.
Wonder how this can help you? Well..for starters, with building your resume, talking on the phone, and landing an interview, and then hopefully nailing that interview.
And remember the ever important 80/20 rule. Its 80% WHO you know, and 20% WHAT you know. And while I wish it weren't true, it is, and the sooner you learn that and accept it, the sooner you will go further in life.
I wonder what they'll be doing with the member information they now have? If this buyout does happen, I think a reread of their privacy policy will soon be in order.
Not only that, but your selection of providers runs the whole gamut of personalities. My connection is a good friend, well paid professional, athlete, good boyfriend, loving son, etc. Hardly the scumbag type.
This is pretty disgusting as a PR move. I hope everybody takes the time to contact these girls and let them know how they feel about being manipulated like that.
Frankly, I think its pretty telling that there ARE NO UGLY FRAG DOLLS. Real game girls run the gamut from 3-10 in terms of looks, and the fact that these are all near model hotness girls says a lot.
If anybody from Ubisoft is reading this, I will be taking this PR move into consideration next time I am in the market for a video game, or when a friend asks for a recommendation.
Wrong. The true total shill would promote whatever big hit Ubi had out, thus adding to its marketplace dominance and guaranteeing a future of sequels. Remember, thats where the real money is at. Nobody wastes their time trying to prop up the losers.
You know, I always wished they made an RPG out of this thing like you mentioned. It would be so cool if you actually had to concentrate and think a certain way to cast a certain spell, and how well you did it determined its effectiveness. That would ROCK.
That being said, whats the replayability on this sucker? How many different "minigames" are there? Is it a game you definitely need to play alone, or would it be a cool thing for a few friends to sit around playing?
You know, I was always wondering how a system for porn links would work in this kind of environment.
I always get pissed when my TGP sites do a crappy job of describing the links they have. And autopr0n still isn't up to what I feel is acceptible useability. I think this kind of system is great though. You find a couple people who have similar tastes as you, and you all contribute to each others "material".
I always wondered what would happen if things like Adult Swim and the Anime Channel or whatever it is started showing subtitled anime instead of dubbed.
I mean, I'm absolutely positive the vast majority of viewers would appreciate the shift due to the preference of subs over dubs, but it would also help people start learning some Japanese. I know thats how I picked up a bunch, and it also helped supplement the books I was using because it let me hear how things were used in context, and learn some intonation.
As someone in marketing/advertising, I have to agree that I have seen few areas as hyped up as the tech industry in terms of their marketing.
Frankly, its disgusting at times because they hurt the credibility of the entire industry (not that we had much with the/. crowd to begin with).
I try to do my part by not misleading people with what I market as I understand that an informed customer that you treat with respect will be a repeat customer who will spread the good word about you. I also inform people of when deceptive marketing/advertising is used and explain why it is bad and meaningless.
I think all of you are familiar with such lies as the "industry leader" claim or the "does more" claim. To those I have to ask "industry leader according to whom? The CEO fo the company? Because legally as long as you have the quote from someone, you are allowed to make that claim", and then I ask "does more? Does more WHAT?! Oh wait, legally that doesn't matter as long as you don't state it. It could ben "does more to line the CEOs wallets" and it would still be legal."
"When all you produce are reviews, throw out the occasional spoiler, and every once and awhile interview a meaningful industry player asking stupid questions like "was coming up with the sequel to Daikatana III difficult?" it is extremely easy to see how this is happening."
Reviews? HAHAHAHAHA! The one thing I would love to see is a Penny Arcade magazine in print form where they actually give real reviews about games, and aren't afraid to say it sucks. Part of the problem is that there's tons of reviews for games, but they're all good because thats how they keep getting free stuff from the game companies.
Oh, you're still playing retail UO. I was wondering why you were so angry. Try some of the player made shards, they fix a lot of what was originally crappy about the game, and the people are generally cooler.
I'm sure everybody has seen those ugly black "bras" that you put on the front of your car. Well, this could be a much cooler solution to that problem that could protect your whole car. And its reapplicable.
" And beyond the people who cant make up their mind what color they want their car to be, what exactly is the point of this?"
Does there need to be any other point? That seems plenty to me. Plus, it could facilitate people who want to temporarily paint things onto their car, such as for weddings, or if you're giving the car as a gift, etc.
No offense, but your opinion doesn't necessarily make it the best. If you had performed a slightly more thorough test, like these people have, then that might be true, but well...you see what I'm getting at.
"They have a lot of eyes watching, but don't really use that to the general advantage of OSS."
What makes you think that is the purpose of Slashdot. I don't remember it saying anywhere that it will only do things to the general advantage of OSS.
Slashdot is News for Nerds, and there are MANY types of nerds out there. Including legal nerds, and Windows loving nerds.
I myself skip past all the linux stories on here. Why? Because as someone who's primary use of computers is gaming, Linux is not that much of a concern to me.
And it is not fair to say that they don't cover indie games, because I can think of quite a few new games that I've heard of on Slashdot that are indie that I wouldn't have otherwise.
Fortunately, for their concerned readership, we have the moderation system and the strength of hundreds of thousands of nerds with too much time on their hands and lots of paranoia who will research this in depth, and provide the truth when it is obscured. Macguyver could...

But definitely make the stats viewable in-game.

For all you Slashdotters who love to bash us marketing folks, people like Justin keep people like me in business. ;)
