Merriam-Webster online provides three noun definitions: 1) an ornamental flat braid or round cord used as a trimming 2) spirit, vim (the odd definition of the bunch) 3) cripple, limp and a verb definition: 4) limp, hobble
Princeton WordNet provides the following definitions: Noun: lameness, limping, gimp, gimpiness, gameness, claudication (disability of walking due to crippling of the legs or feet) Verb: limp, gimp, hobble, hitch (walk impeded by some physical limitation or injury)
A query of dictionary.com reveals several definitions, none of which imply any level of beauty or perfection of form. (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/gimp)
Additionally, saying "it's also a dressmaker's tool" is slightly incorrect; it's actually a term better applied to fabric trimming in general.
The bottom line is that open source software names just suck - regardless of what the acronym GIMP may stand for, the name itself is not intuitive, as others (say, Photo Paint, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro) might be.
I think the majority of slashdotters have the wrong perspective on what "new and innovative" means; a lot of people have pointed out that Blizzard has put out mostly the same type of games with the same concepts. I can't vouch for Diablo vs. Diablo 2 because I never played them, but here's an example: Warcraft III introduced the idea of "heroes" into an RTS game, adding an element of RPG play to it. No longer was the game based wholly on spamming the same type of unit. Now players get to figure in what heroes to use, what order, and how many, as well as what other units mesh well with that hero's abilities. What I think they mean by new and innovative in terms of MMOG is gameplay *style* - how the game feels and the game mechanics. Just as WoW wasn't the same as Diablo, their new MMOG might be more akin to, for instance, Planetside? Just a thought. I might be off my rocker, who knows.
I don't think a neutron would qualify even if size weren't an issue. Supposedly this is a "tiny" particle that isn't composed of other charged particles; a neutron, however, is composed of other charged particles. Or did I miss something somewhere?
This post doesn't deserve an insightful mod. Sure, the MESSAGE may have been insightful, but the delivery hardly warrants anything other than flamebait and troll mods. Please, this isn't insightful; this is just offensive.
Yes - The Specialists is AWESOME. That's all there is to it. But there isn't a port being done to Source, so my question for the more-knowledgable-than-I/. crowd is this - is there a *similar* game for HL: Source in development? Action Source, maybe?
It's a real shame eMachines got such a bad rap back in the day. I bought an eMachines W4682 from Wal Mart not too long ago... Pentium4 2.6GHz, 80GB hard disk, a DVD+RW, and a decent amount of RAM. Unlike the previous generations, it did, indeed, have a free AGP slot. It was probably the best non-custom computer I've ever used; it put my Grandmother's Dell (of similar specifications) to shame.
True, the PowerBooks can maintain their sleep state, but what if I'm in the middle of something critical on, say, my PowerMac or iMac, but then (say) a storm comes and I need to turn it off? I'd ideally like to be able to save the exact state that I'm in on my Mac, even with the machine *unplugged*, something they don't seem to be able to do (sadly).
It sounds like a crappy example, but it *has* happened to me before.
But why have we not seen hibernation on a Mac yet? That's the thing that really bugs me. I want to turn of my Mac, but at the same time keep my programs open. It seems like it wouldn't be terribly difficult to implement, especially for a power as big as Apple.
Indeed - Compare the hibernation times of a Windows 2000 Professional box with those of a Windows XP Professional box. XP takes a LOT less time to hibernate. Probably because it only saves pages that are being used?
I don't know about anyone else, but I don't see n****r as racist when they call themselves that publicly (both in the media, and not. Grocery store or rap track, it makes no difference).
The parent said 'Somehow, people who say "abstinence is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy" are derided as being unrealistic...' That's the problem. They ARE unrealistic. People WILL HAVE SEX, you can't get around it, and telling them "abstinence is the only way," all the while beating the Bible is not going to change that (and guess what our sex ed courses do anyway?). If your aim is to keep illegitimate pregnancies down, you need to show an array of methods, not just abstinence, because the people who are most likely to need the course are also the ones most likely to completely disregard abstinence as an option.
Voltaire said, "Ice-cream is exquisite. What a pity it isn't illegal." Taboo will always draw people, and by trying to push a "NO SEX EVAR" agenda you effectively tabooize it.
Isn't this the same bill the federal budget cuts for public broadcasting are on? I submitted a story about that today. Unfortunately, I doubt it'll be in in time. Basically, the approp. bill proposed 9 Jun offers cuts in federal budget up to 45% for public broadcasting, and its subcommittee proposed COMPLETE cuts in the future.

You, sir, are now deemed Captain of the Failboat. Way to miss the joke.
You still have to have a credit card to sign up for an account... therefore, yes, Blizz already has your info.
Part of the appeal of Facebook wall posts is that everyone can see them if they so choose... :)

The reports of my infertility have been greatly exaggerated...
And cut down the largest tree in the forest...with a HERRING! Yes, a herring.
