Just thought I'd add a bit of sanity here for the 1 or 2 people that think before posting. Microsoft has already released service pack 2 a and b to OEM's and OEM's (and their new customers) are the only people getting this version. End users aren't going to be getting this as from windows update it simply adds more license keys, OK? That said Microsoft HAS confirmed Service Pack 3 for XP which will be the roll-up of all security issues thus far and a few more. See here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/service packs.mspx Where it states: SP3 for Windows XP Professional is currently planned for 1H CY2008. This date is preliminary.

maybe know something about eve before you post crud like this. CCP actively work with Transgaming and the client works perfectly well under cedega. A simple google would have found that out. The directX 10 client is going to co-exist with a directx 9 client for a long time as not everyone is going to windows vista and it would be utterly stupid to think that a company that relies on subscribers would cut most of them on older platforms off. To each his own with regard to you leaving. I've been playing a long time now, probably over 2 years, yet i have a character i started 4 months ago who specialized and regularly takes down far older players in pvp. it's down to player skill not character skillpoints. One of the key elements that people with the opinion "I'll never catch up" forget is that by combining forces with other players, you can overcome far older players. There is never a case of an older player being a god of every facet of the game. GoonSwarm (an ingame alliance) is a great example, with over 2000 members, this is an alliance that consists mostly of newbie players and yet they are one of the powers in the game at the moment. Swarming works :)

Yes, of course they do. I for one, haven't bought a single game since I started playing EVE-Online about 2 years ago now. I play on average 2-3 hours a day (I'd hardly say I'm an addict, because sometimes I don't play for days, even weeks). Since there is no 'finishing' an MMORPG, I have yet to feel those pangs of boredom that would move me to another game. Even after I finish playing EVE, when i Get bored or all my friends leave it, I highly doubt I'll be buying a lot of games in the future. More then likely I'll try to find another online game that I can get lost in. It's saved me so much money I've bought 2 new computers in the past 2 years and still had plenty of disposable income for the fun things in life :)

He seems to be doing a good job of it too as people keep reporting what's on his blog on various news sites :-)

Schwartz is keeping up the company's marketing blitz on Red hat, as they were (and probably still are) losing sales to RHEL. This is a Solaris Vs RHEL thing not a Solaris Vs Linux thing. :-)

What "media player market?" Is there a version of Windows Media Player that costs money? All they're doing is giving stuff away. They bundled IE not to get us hooked and jack up the prices, but because an OS should come with a browser. IE is free (as in beer). MediaPlayer is free.

Think the whole thing through.... The Media player market isn't concerned with the client! This is a war over the streaming media formats and the streaming media servers. Once WMA and WMV are standards microsoft can pump up the cost per stream sent to the client from their servers, all because they used their monopoly on the desktop to force out any viable competitors.

Real et al dont make much cash from selling the player, its all from subscription services and licensing technology to others, like the encoders, streaming media servers and OEM deals.

Actually, not really. Sony and Royal Philips could use this to their advantage. We all know that Sony complained about microsoft trying to change their licensing deal after <cough> the settlement with the doj. Maybe they can use this as a bargaining chip with MS? They could haggle for a better OEM licensing deal and hold this over MS or they could possibly just force MS to license their IP. Or just force MS to pay (insert X billion here) for the company

OTOH what do I know :-)

Actually, you can set all the defaults for office using Group Policy objects in Active directory. There are additional add-ons in the office resource kit which allow you to change office settings for all your users. You can have a policy that makes Word XP always save as rtf or word 97 or even html (ugh word html). Its pretty easy. see here for more info.

Really? I don't believe that this should be up to the software developer. The information that goes into office documents belongs to the company that writes those documents not the developer of the application, and it is only fair that they be allowed to access that information from any application that they want. XML document formats would allow this. By sticking with proprietary file formats you are hurting your customer in an attempt to lock them into your file formats.

Choice people! That's what its all about, I should be able to use any office suite to edit my office documents in the same manner that I can use any text editor to edit my text files.

How about some sort of XML based configuration file standard? The way I see it is a specific directory with xml config files for everything on the system. The directory will have cvs or some other system that will let you roll back to a previous version of the config in case you break something while making a change.

To support legacy applications that have not caught up with the new system, you could have a program that transforms the XML file back into the original config file via XSLT or whatever, or am I just dreaming

Disclaimer: This could all be crap, I'm not a programmer :-)
