Wait a moment, what happens if I write a scathingly honest review that then costs me job opportunities because it's connected to LinkedIn? Or what if I write falsely glowing reviews in order to bulk up my apparent knowledge of a product in order to get a job? How is this going to effect the job market, and is subject to gaming or abuse? What if my review makes me liable for legal action by the company whose software I review? I'm just a contracting work from home Windows admin, I can't afford to have my LinkedIn screwed with. - HEX
I see no indication that the mp3 is anything but the version they plan to use at the exhibit. If you look up a few directories you see that they do have some older versions in mp3, wav, and m4a; but the final is mp3 only. I have a feeling they converted to mp3 without knowing that they were cutting out the higher frequencies by doing so. Of course even without the "mosquito sound" I bet all the youngsters would claim to hear it just because they are supposed to.;) - HEX
We've slowly been working on a Cthulhu/Lovecraft style universe with erotic story aspects but thanks to the collapse of film making in Michigan it's slow going. Anyone interested check out http://www.hex.xxx/ we've got some short YouTube videos up and are looking for interested folks both here and online to participate. - HEX
Of course IP blacklists aren't 100% effective, but is Peerblock http://www.peerblock.com/ still a viable defense against known tracking agencies? - HEX
Interesting that people are assuming that I'm only using it to stalk celebrities; most of my use is free form discussion, latest news, and of course talking with other creative folks both famous and not so famous.
Not directed at you some of the ACs: Twitter isn't supposed to be continuously read, of course no one is going to read all the tweets that mention them, and people shouldn't be trying to read every tweet by their favorite celebrities. You look at the stream as it goes by, you don't obsess over it. - HEX
You folks are thinking of the wrong celebrities, I'm talking about the real people like Kevin Smith (@thatKevinSmith), Bruce Campbell (@GroovyBruce), William Shatner (@WilliamShatner), Warren Ellis (@warrenellis), and many more who tweet and respond themselves. I guess I just don't follow the kind of people who don't do their own Twitter. - HEX
On Twitter I can actually interact with celebrities directly, on Facebook I can consume what their handlers put online. Huge difference. Twitter is like IRC for the world, dive in, read and chat, go about your day. - HEX
When I first submitted this last November I thought it might be something that would be shot down fairly soon by "Real Science" (TM), good to see that it is still considered viable. And you'd get more plant material with less environmental impact from industrial hemp than most of the others. - HEX
Ford keeps trying to fill the same few positions over and over again for literally years, which means every tech staffing firm out there contacts me about the same Windows admin position. I interviewed for an expert position in a different platform area three years ago (which took them a year to fill) and the same support position was "looking for candidates" then. Is it really a position when it's been continuously open for three years and is a mid-range skill admin position? (I just checked my email and the same position and job description comparing a 2010 email to a 2013)
I have seen a few positions that may be GM but nothing I've seen from any of the local or worldwide recruiters to indicate that either GM or Ford are hiring lots of tech workers. Unless you are looking for work and reading the job descriptions every day like I am perhaps you don't see that all these calls are from different recruiters calling with the same job.
I post on job boards, LinkedIn, and work with local recruiters; while this means I get more spam I also get a bit more exposure. For the record local recruiting firms are how I've gotten most of my contracts over the years, but I don't want to restrict my job search since I have occasionally had a recruiter find me work from my resume on the boards. Thanks for your response but I think the "huge demand" is all smoke and mirrors. - HEX
Welcome to Detroit, or really, most of Michigan. The same tech jobs posted over and over by the same recruiters... sorting through positions that say "Michigan" but are really redirects to another state... More invective and frustration... While there are a few good recruiting firms local the international recruiters spam the boards and inbox. Unfortunately the market doesn't support many of us who have skills and can't move out of state for whatever reason(s). I'm looking at taking a position and moving to the area it's located in since most commutes to the few "tech hubs" we have left are 1 to 2 hour drives, ironically I'm 20 minutes away from downtown Detroit but decent tech jobs there are few and far between. - HEX
What still works with Twitter, has great features for curating galleries both from phone and especially online via PC? I've tried a few but they all seem pretty basic when it comes to working with galleries. - HEX
I'd be happy to enjoy a 1Gbps connection, but I'd need real pay (not the startup promise of pay later) and probably relocation assistance. As a long time Windows hacker who specializes in OS/apps rollouts, migrations, etc, I've got skills but even I can't feed my household on promises. Anyone serious feel free to contact me for my resume, I'm not happy with the tech industry in the Detroit area. (although I'm thinking about Ann Arbor so I can stay fairly close to family/friends);) - HEX
I vote where it counts, in the voting booth. I also occasionally spread the word about things I'm interested in politically, and yes I've "voted" on the WtP site. However it may show current trends or poll numbers or special interests, WtP isn't how we actually decide anything in government. So I should be concerned I'm not wasting more time on WtP when I could be reading about the issues or communicating with others on issues I'm passionate about? WtP seems like more "bread and circus" than actual tools of government. - HEX
I have yet to see anything suggesting that the site plays a part in the actual democratic process. Sure we can get a response to a petition but does it mean anything? I feel I get more bang for my buck (time) by emailing one of my representatives or VOTING than I do spending time on the WtP site. - HEX
I've only voted on a very few of these, and mainly they come through my twitter feed. So the ones I am seeing is already selected by a peer group. I have no interest in visiting the WtP site just to get the chance to vote on something I am not personally invested in. Hell I leave half the mod points I get here on/. unused simply because if something is interesting enough I'll usually comment on it instead of mod. Anyone who is interested in hanging around on WtP just to vote on random topics is NOT someone I want deciding what the White House comments on. - HEX
GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The firing of a former Battle Creek Walmart worker, who was dismissed for failing a drug test but claimed he should be exempt because of Michigan's medical marijuana law, has been upheld by a federal appeals court that ruled the provision doesn't cover private business decisions.
The medical marijuana law “does not regulate private employment,” the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals panel said in a ruling issued Wednesday.
Joseph Casias, who has an inoperable brain tumor, was fired by the Walmart store in Battle Creek after he failed the drug test. He sued, but the case was dismissed by U.S. District Judge Robert Jonker.
Jonker earlier ruled that the fundamental problem with (Casias') case is that the (medical marijuana law) does not regulate private employment.
“Rather, the Act provides a potential defense to criminal prosecution or other adverse action by the state. All the (law) does is give some people limited protection from prosecution by the state, or from other adverse state action in carefully limited medical marijuana situations.”
Casias worked for Walmart from November 2004 until November 2009. He was fired for testing positive for marijuana despite the fact that he said he never used the substance at work.
The man's oncologist recommended he try marijuana after the law took effect in 2008. Casias found that it reduced pain as well as side effects of other medication.
The appeals panel, however, agreed with Jonker’s previous ruling.
“The district court held that the (medical marijuana law) did not regulate private employment but that the statute could potentially provide a defense to criminal prosecution.
“The district court concluded, therefore, that private employees are not protected from disciplinary action as a result of their use of medical marijuana, nor are private employers required to accommodate the use of medical marijuana in the workplace. In rendering its decision, the district court explained that Michigan voters could not have intended such consequences and that accepting plaintiff’s argument would create a new category of protected workers which would ‘mark a radical departure from the general rule of at-will employment in Michigan.’”
Casias’ attorneys insisted his firing undermined the medical marijuana law.
If you got this far, let me know if you need a Remote Windows admin/packager/etc Contractor who has a Medical Marijuana card here in MI. I'm looking for interesting new contracts especially migrations and server/client rollouts and I don't want to deal with this kind of bullshit discrimination against a medicine that allows me to NOT take addictive and physically dangerous opioids. - HEX
Seriously, all I want is mini computers smaller than a hearing aid battery that can run XBMC with enough power to watch any format/compression from YouTube to BluRay. Is that too much to ask? Of course it's coming, and these systems are a great step towards that (yes I know XMBC runs on rPi), but for now I'm sticking to my hand built full size PC system running XBMC. - HEX
No shit, they should dedicate a whole new building to Marvell Technology, with special thanks to the jury members. It would of course be known as the M.T. Building for short. - HEX
As someone who creates art like this (in some cases) I've found it works best when both intelligence and emotion elevate this material from simply shock gore to artwork. Of course, I'm insane and admit it, but no one is keeping an eye on me besides my thousands of website visitors. - HEX
If it does end up damaging another satellite, what can anyone do about it? It's not like North Korea is going to nicely exchange insurance info with the aggrieved party or pay for damages. Hell, if it's a US company I doubt they'd even be allowed to accept funds from there legally if they were amenable. I could see several scenarios in which this leads to war with North Korea, and frankly I'm not really caring who takes them out at this point. - HEX
If you add "gamification" to adult websites you'd have the perfect setup, hit all the pleasure centers. I initially played with a reward system and decided that I didn't want to force "participation for points", maybe it will help if done as game/reward! - HEX
The only real improvement I can think of is allowing ad-hoc LAN/console party style gaming, and I am struggling to think of how narrow a niche people using their phones (as opposed to more established LAN/console party equipment) would be for that application. Frankly I'm more excited for the futer of augmented reality games on phones, especially multiplayer ones. I also echo most of the above, this exists already even on Android and dedicated Android consoles are coming. - HEX
