    My old Radio Shack Optimus model 61 has a feature called "Commercial>>ADVANCE" when, when enabled, will automatically mark commercials then skip them on playback. Works pretty well, too.

    In the case of UHF, the effect of mandating UHF inclusion was to reduce the share of the big networks, (ABC, CBS, NBC), and open the market to independent stations.

    I can't think of any "highest bidder" with an ax to grind regarding closed-captioning.

    Well, we wouldn't have UHF stations (maybe that's good, maybe not) or closed-captioning (which I use a lot, even thought I'm not deaf) unless their inclusion in new TVs hadn't been mandated.

    The photo seems to show that the replacement models hace a different color faceplate, so I guess one motivation might be that if you're caught using an old one on a test, you are toast.

    I think TFA says that they need more small, individual donors, not organizations, to keep the "little guy/big business" ratio within bounds.

    I'm sorry to disagree with you but, while "big honking jet engines within 100 feet" is a necessary part of flying, hearing half-conversations and breathing cigarette smoke is not. When crammed together with 400 others, I'd much rather the 400 others avoid distracting me. Do you really think this makes me an ass?

    1. The "average" person is neither dumb nor malicious. It is a small minority, those who cannot treat guns, cars, pets, spray paint, children, etc., responsibly, who cause problems.

    2. Yes, it's up to society to punish wrongdoers. But I don't want to wait for society to show up when a 300lb. crackhead tries to break into my house. Vigilantism is going after the bad guy after the crime. Shooting him on his way in is merely being proactive.

    Older corded phones worked fine regardless of local power outages. POTS is there as long as the copper is intact. When the VoIP folks figure out how to line-power everything from the CO, I'll sign up in a heartbeat.
