    RTFA -- The article doesn't say 10MHz, only the /. story does, and that may not be entirely accurate.

    10,000 calculations does not mean 10MHz, at least, not in marketing speak.

    Consider the average NYT reader's brainpower: A calculation is the number of times the CPU comes up with results, not how many clock cycles it takes to get to that output.

    That being said, the chip is likely highly optimized to do exactly one thing.

    Think back to the RISC debate... But in this case, you only need a handful of instructions to begin with, and only the one(s) used while the shoe is in motion need to be optimized in any significant way.

    Around here we have a minimum wage which overrides these systems and requires the company to pay the minimum wage in all cases, regardless of sales compensation.

    Well, actually, you mentioned credit card statements, and that is one example of something I consider wrong.

    How do you pay your credit card bills?

    There are options... Paying online might be convenient, but sending cheques and including whatever junk mail you have handy, will ultimately be more satisfying, plus it costs the company manpower to process your payments.

    What if you have more ads then bills to mail? Well, send two cheques to each company instead of one, that way you can get rid of all the ads.

    Or, just mail the ads without a cheque, stamp, or return address. Many companies automatically accept postage-due mail.

    The irony (in your statement) is that Windows versions based on NT are operating systems in their own right (Although 9X based versions are GUIs on top of DOS), but Linux is not.

    Linux is a kernel. A distro is an operating system.

    so it's all about the quickness, right? ie, you can take the picture and *immediately* have it available on your computer for scrutinizing, etc...

    More then speed is price per picture... When I go to a wedding with a digital camera, I usually end up with hundreds of 4MP pictures. I couldn't do that if I was buying film and paying for processing and developing for 12-15 copies of the top 20-30 pictures to send out to the family when they keep one or two pictures.

    With digital, I can take hundreds easily, public the best 20-50 pictures online and people can tell me which ones they want.

    Could you? Yes. PAR doesn't care about the contents of the files, PAR doesn't know a RAR from a MP3 from another PAR.

    Should you? No. Creating more pieces of the original PAR set is more efficient, and allows larger segments of dataloss to be recovered.

    PAR2 would be even more effective, since an entire file might not go bad and PAR2 can recover small amounts of corrupt data and use the remaining valid data.

    For the speed or the always-on?

    In my ISP days whenever we had a residential cancellation we'd always ask why. We didn't have any winback bonuses or anything, but I'd always try.

    I found most people didn't really care about the speed (it was nice, but not worth the $37.41/month), but once we started about having to ask the teenage daughter to get off the phone just so mom could check for email...

    Sure, both closed source software and GPL software restrict your rights compared to , that's a given.

    But the flip side of that is that both typical-Microsoft licensing and GPL give you more rights then if they didn't exist. In other words, if I write a program I might not want to release it under the public domain, so I might choose to not release it at all if I can't place GPL type restrictions on it.
