Did you take a look at the screenshots? Those are awesome! I especially love the progress bar for the security related program code named vim! That must be like viably impenetrable machine or something right? In all seriousness, he's up to 9 people registered for his forums, doesn't show a single screenshot of anything proprietary, doesn't explain why his distro would be better then anything else. I don't know of any security experts that run through hundreds of secrity aplications let alone even know of hundreds of them. I would imagine the best security experts have maybe a good 3-12 apps they use that are specifically security related and that's it!
A better idea for a security related machine is to make something that has a gui that any person can use and understand. The people that need the most help are the ones that never heard of nessus or care to take the time to find out on their own. You basically need to put it in front of their face and say see? isn't this handy?
I've got the same type of headphones and play games all the time on my computer. I keep the volume turned down really low so I can barely hear it and have actually trained my ears to be more sensitive. It's not a good thing though since it sounds like everyone talks too loud nowadays...
Ever see the first season of the simpsons? That was aweful to look at, but I think a lot of what a show offers is measured in potential also. It might not have many of those bad qualities you described as it progresses and the team gains experience.
Using an open standard allows it to be natively supported by browsers. As you can see in the example of firefox natively supporting it in 1.5. Problem is that their support is very limited and treats the svg document like a raster image at this point.
Flash won't ever have that opportunity and will always be just a plugin. Another benefit is that because it's just a standard, I can write whatever programs I want to take advantage of the implementation of svg. I don't need to purchase some flash author in order to accomplish a simple task.
The only reason svg got as far as it did was because of the backing of Adobe. If Adobe doesn't push forward, you won't see the other major browser manufacturers supporting svg. Possibly mozilla could take the torch and continue, but that's something of a stretch.
Because Adobe and browser manufacturer's can't get along. You have not seen a new release of the svg plugin in forever, and the functionality has been broken over and over again with each release of browsers. Why would Adobe want to continue working on the svg side of things when they can reproduce a more widely integrated technology of flash?
First you need to allow more then just http through the 2nd firewall since it needs database access...
Second, firewalls really don't do that much for you. They stop things like blaster which attack an open port on the operating system, but let's fix the damn oeprating system to patch those holes, not just cover them up with a rug.
You don't really have to "hack through" a firewall. The hack is you leaving any ports open. If I can get through http, that's all I need. The real protection should be that all incomming and outgoing traffic from http will not harm your system in any possible way.
It looks like the main purpose of crypting your personal data in a database is so that people that have access to the database cannot read the information in plain text. If you're using Oracle, you can put permissions on each of the individual columns to mimic the same results crypting your database would produce. These people are really just worried about their data readers opening a sql client and just extracting information, kind of like how you're luggage goes through an airplane. We'd like to think that the workers there won't steal anything out of our luggage, but we sure as hell won't put our luggage through without a lock on it at least.
Security to me is a huge deal, but beyond my application level security and the permissions I put on the data, most other things are out of my control. The solutions people propose do nothing but delay me in my work that I should be doing instead. I'd rather push all of this burden to the people that can really make the difference in this field. The manufacturer's of the software that run our systems (os) and the servers (apache/mysql/ms*/etc.), you make those secure, and we won't have to be this damn paranoid.
I got in beta and could see how poorly things were going from there, this really isn't a surprise at all.
You were required (although I don't think they had a means of checking) to read a whole bunch of documentation before each test period, which only happened once a week or so. During that test session you would test something they've implemented and gave feedback + try to break it. So you'd fill out your forms and submit them. The problem was that they were ill-equiped to handle the actual testing periods, the periods themselves were scheduled far in advance, but were delayed on the day they were scheduled by hours.
Organization was seriously lacking for something outlined so well in advance and required so much of the testers before hand.
I gave it 3 weeks, and told them it wasn't worth my time if they weren't going to respect my time. You don't do this in the corporate world without getting fired. That's how you lose a customer.
But happily, I'm a WoW addict, and I can sleep at night.
If we flew a 20 ton object past another object to change it's course, it would have to be an incredibly far distance away so the miniscule trajectory change would have time to make a difference.
Point being, are we trying to retrieve the 20 ton object after it flys by? How about give in and just assume it as a loss and fly the 20 ton object right into the comet/meteor. I would think that would have more of a dramatic effect, thus cutting down on the time needed to find the object comming at us.
perjury requires you taking the oath. you can tell the police you're god and then tell them you're the devil, and then tell them you're lance armstrong... won't make a damn bit of difference except gives them more ammo to use when you're on the stand, but until you take the oath, you don't have to tell the truth.
Best part is, I can see other countries who install their own root servers manipulate the network traffic so all dns requests inside their borders go to their root servers. Now you've just taken a freedom you had about which server to query from and thrown it out the window. I'm pretty sure the U.S. wouldn't do the same, and if someone felt so inclined they could set their dns servers to something over in europe and be happy.
it's not a good business move if you treat office and windows as the same company. If you split the company up, it makes perfectly good sense to make your product versatile enough to be put on multiple different platforms.
Take apache, java, mysql, perl... the list keeps going and going... for example.
another thing people have to realize is there's a difference between using linux and being pro-open source. These are not mutually inclusive attributes of users. I don't use linux because it's open source, I use it because it's more versatile. Would I not use a product because it isn't open source? Hell no. Does writing programs for linux require that they be open source? Hell no!
You want examples, here's one i know you youngyins can relate to: World of Warcraft. Is that open source? nope. Does it run on linux? Yep. If you play world of warcraft, and you love linux would you play it on linux? give me a break with your i'm not going to run office because it's closed source hipocritic ideology. (the last rant is more directed at the other replies that i dont feel like writing individual responses to.)
Actually I blame Microsoft for not moving office to linux.
That alone would help a ton of places make the switch... but I guess microsoft as it is today wouldn't like that would they?
they didnt have any more problems then usual, before they just didn't pay that close of attention to damage after they got in space. its just a bunch of hoopla over all the usuall stuff cuz so many eyes were waiting for something to go wrong.
i don't see the point in arguing about video games. I figure they are a form of entertainment. You could spend the time and money on something else like movies or lets say playing an outdoor game of some sort. The point I'm making is that if you want to be entertained by blood and guts, you'll find a way to satisfy that need. Whether it be video games or not. By just removing or fighting against video games really doesn't solve ay problems, because a new one will take its place. It might be movies, or it might be a new game (choking game anyone?)...
If you really want to decrease hatred in this world, stop leading by example in a negative direction. It's a horrible thing to say games are bad, but killing terrorists protects your freedom. Maybe we should devote our time to fixing those problems instead of trying to just win.
more people fear cancer then video games, why do we have to spend so much money and time on something that is really just trivial and can be regulated by our parents? let's put this motivation towards something that is useful. We could in fact keep those old farts around a lot longer if we actually tried to help them, and I wouldn't mind keeping the few grandparents I have left around a bit longer. I don't give a flying phk about gta or what some kid plays in his free time. I want to be selfish, I want my family.
ending guilty lives does not necessarily save innocent lives. same as a guilty life may have been used in ending a more sinister life, thus saving more innocent lives then taking. you can point out the opposite if you want, but it makes no difference.
then again, if this is some biblical related thing, arn't you a guilty life by exacting your revenge on a guilty one? do we really want to just take the motto kill them all and let gOD sort them out?
cmon, we hear that in movies and video games that are intended as being violent and crass.
already is

I wish I had mod points because this is the first article in a long time that I really felt that way. Who cares?
Ever see the first season of the simpsons? That was aweful to look at, but I think a lot of what a show offers is measured in potential also. It might not have many of those bad qualities you described as it progresses and the team gains experience.
Long live Arrested Development!
The interest would most likely be very stimulating though.
We do...
Have you ever saved a word document as an html document in Microsoft Word?
I call that output mshtml!!!
Bad because he also added that they'd keep her for themselves.. Now if they shared...

Whats going to happen with svg?
:(

Secure software is not impossible.

The british should be immune to tons of stuff then, it's amazing what they can accomplish sharing only 1 small gene pool.

You Canadians really are glutons for punishment eh?
Leo is just the dopier version of Bob Villa, who knows how they still get on TV... Well, Bob is starting to know what he's doing atleast.
