A few flaws (as I see it) in your thinking. Ford no longer sells the Th!nk vehicles. There are some other companies (gemcar) that sell comparable vehicles, at around $7,000.00 for a base model (i presume that's a 2 seater with no doors, not very practical). This saves as you said 2billion gallons of gas over a year. (I didn't check the math).
Now, let's say that an average of $0.46 of that is tax (IIRC that's what Colorado has). That's an additional $920,000,000.00/year lost in tax revinue that goes towards road maintance. This could be replaced in part by adding taxes to the electic, but that's not really fair is it, since only 10 Million will be using these cars and everyone uses electic powered items that don't cause wear on the roads.
$70,000,000,000.00 to provide cars for people plus an added cost of $920,000,000 per year. Kind of expensive don't you think?
Not sure how this is going to allieve traffic congestion, since you're still driving on the same roads (just slower).
I really don't care to speculate on how many jobs this would create, since selling an electic car to someone, in most cases would preclude them buying a traditional auto, so those sales would decrease by 10 million and those workers would be displaced (fired or transfered).
Now the tax cut that you infer that we should cut into to pay for this is for everyone. The "rich" that you speak of might see a greater portion of this than you or I, but that's because they are already paying more in taxes. The sliding scale tax means that the more you make, the larger chuck of money that you earn each year goes to the governement. Seems only fair if that were to be evened out a little.
Now, don't get me wrong. Gas powered cars have their days limited and this is a good thing, but I don't see that it's the governement's job to finance the whole thing with our money. I think some of our money should go to funding research, but not too much of it. The private companies that fund this research will be the ones to reap the bennifits.
Sorry for the long rant there. You've got the right idea in general - let's move away from internal combustion engines, but not in the way you've proposed.
What's this? A well reasoned response that states it's point in an understandable fassion, doesn't slam anyone down and has examples that make sense???
Man - what's this place coming to that we let people post this stuff?
What would be really effective at the handgun level would be to have a sabot round that has a smaller caliber penetrator made out of a denser metal.
Right, I think the term you're looking for is sabot discarding - the sabot is the part of the round that changes the effective cal of the munition.
In tanks - IIRC - they are APFSSD rounds - that's Armor Piericing Fin Stabalized Sabot Discarding, but the popular name for them is SABOT (like you said). Strictly a Kinetic Energy (KE) round. The other "authorized" round for US M1A1 series of tanks (120mm sb) are the HEAT - High Explosive Anti Tank. These go BANG when they hit and drive the melted core of the round through the armor.
I wonder what you'd get if you took depleted uranium and coated it with this diamond powder. Would it make it more effective or would the coating shatter before it had a chance to do any good. Armor based on this would be worthless as it would be too brittle to be effective at disapating the energy from the weapon. Unless you found a way to say coat steel threads with this, then weave them into a cloth - similiar to fiberglass. Probably not as effective as making them out of synthetic spider weaves.
Wow, a lot of that is probably spelled wrong, sorry. But it's light out so I can go home now:)
The experiments formally tested at this wind tunnel site have been moved to congress. An unnamed NASA reseacher was quoted as saying "There is just so much hot air expelled there, it seemed redudant to have a wind tunnel. In fact, we're also looking at this thus untapped resource as a possible source for energy".
NASA is also looking into tapping the "natural gas" deposits found around the nation's Taco Bells.
If it turns out for their launch system that they use a gigantic rubber band stretched between two immense pylons, and charge $10 million per flight, then... GREAT!
funny really that's almost exactly what went through my head. "500 million per launch. Ok, get me 2 really big rubberbands, 4 paperclips and two hookers." "Two hookers, what for?" "Because man cannot live on bread alone my friend" "Oh, you'll be wanting some bread too then I take it?"::Sigh:: It's no wonder people think I'm strange.
Because it it of almost no value. The paltry results we could get from it do not justify the cost of continuing to operate it.
Unless of course we produce massive ammounts of space pr0n on it, then I'd imagine that the male readership of/. alone would fund the entire project at a profit!
Those "classic" cars you see on the road (like the old Falcons and Mustangs) are kept where they are today through lots of TLC.
This is not true in every instance. Yes, maybe a 1970 'tang that's worth 100 billion because it's in cherry condition is that way because the owner babies it. My 1970 Dodge D200 gets driven very seldom because I don't have a lot of need for it, but when I do drive it I abuse the crap out of it, and it's taken me less than $500 (including replacement tires) to keep her running for the last 5 years. Not a bad investment when my ex g/f's car has had over a grand put into it in the last year and still stalls (but only at night and only in the summer). She's about to give up on it - if anyone in Colorado knows of a VERY (sub $500) cheap car that's ugly but runs well, drop me an email.
Guess different models and differnt owners will treat their cars differnently and get different results out of them.
so all you have to do to get unlimited viewing time is keep the dvd in a vacuum, nothing major
Ummm... my vacuum doesn't play DVDs. Even if it did, I'd imagine the disc would get all dirty from all the dirt and dust and "stuff" that gets in the canister when I use it to clean my floors.:)
Its really a geeks movie if i ever saw one. goes right up there (on a different shelf- but still a classic like..) monty python. Absolutely.:)
Facinating. I didn't know you'd been in my house. The 2 dvds I own (I rent a lot, but only own 2) are The Matrix and Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail.
I wasn't able to see Reloaded this last week, but I plan to go on a nice "quiet" night - maybe Tuesday late show.
You bring up some good points for privacy, but I feel that a company that supplies you with a PC or communication tool has a right to look at the data that is on a machine that they own, and to monitor the data that goes over the network that they paid for. In addition, most if not all companies make this policy known and often have a disclaimer appear at login.
I'm a big fan of privacy, but I feel that you give up some of those rights at work. If you don't want your personal information to become the company's knowldge, don't put it on your PC. If you have a medical condition, most employers will provide you with the privacy that you need to take care of it (private office for the phone call, etc). This does not mean that it's ok to look for pictures of VD to see if you're ok, or if you do that the employeer can't question you on it.
No one but you and maybe God owns your soul or even your thoughts (so far anyway). Think all you want, make as many free choices you wish, once you put those thoughs and choices on a machine that is owned by someone else, you're violating your own privacy and making that information public.
So if you see a coworking downloading The Matrix Reloaded, you'd immediately call 911?
Errr... No. I'd rather tell them not to waste their time since the screener version on the net is pretty lame, and to wait for the DVD screener to slip it's way onto the net. Oh.. I mean downloading copyrighted workes are bad, MmmKay?
What does internal rechargable mean? You don't have to take it out to recharge it? Where do you plug in the power cord at night?::shudder as goatse image jumpes into head::
can wirelessly transmit location, movements and vital signs
User number 4859932 has had 8 orgasms while sitting in front of computer. Net logs show massive pr0n downloads during same time frame.
Could also be used to track the movements of a spouse/SO if you think something is up. "Honey are you sure you worked a double shift yesterday and you were not at the strip club for 6 hours before going to a stippers house and had sex? - Well, ok - as long as your sure."
"but we will get to search the internet for ways to stop our crops from dying off, so we can eat tomorrow."
This is all well and good, until they discover/. and the productivity of the community does down the drain.
I think time will show that the faster global communication comes to an area, the other concerns like quality food, drinking water and power sources will be solved. It's not a cause and effect type of thing, but rather it's a side effect of sharing ideas in a global community.
oh, and just to poke fun....
"Oh, the tap water's just bore water - it's not really fit to drink. We get the drinking water trucked in."
"Damn! What's that stink?" "Dead cow in the open drain outside the window there, see?"
Dead cow in the open drain, and the water isn't fit to drink. Hmmmm... Kinda a cause and effect sort of thing isnt' it? Keep dead cows out of your water cycle, and I'll bet a dime to a donut that it's gong to help the water be drinkable.
Exactly. Since part of my job is to figure out how to do more with less, I need to keep abreast of the latest in technology. Thus far my reading slashdot and using some new toys^H^H^H^H^H products listed here, I have a projected savings of what I will earn this year, and the year isn't even half over.
Course, I also work in the middle of the night, with no one else around. No one cares if I spend 80% of my time slacking or working, as long as I keep up with expected timelines, it's all good. They have also figured out that if they give me 150% of what they think I can handle (keeping me challanged) I'm far more productive than if they task me to 50% of what I can do.
I never thought I'd see the day when I saw the words good album and Eminem used in the same sentence! I forget, is he the blue one or the yellow one?
Aside from that, I agree. The blame lays only partly with the P2P file trading. The majority of it is most of the stuff they put out is crap.
The music industy as a whole will evolve, but with any significant evolution, it will be painful and there will be a great deal of reisistance at all steps. Apple has the right idea, and if (when) this model comes around to PCs, I'll support it - presuming that the artists make a fair profit off their work. I've never had a problem paying for good music.
How come the pr0n industy doesn't complain about P2P downloads?
A blank or garbage file, probably full of repeating junk
So how can you tell the difference between a file that's full of repeating junk that's fake and a file of repeating junk that's what the RIAA tries to pass off as music? (sorry, just too easy).
Given an inifinite number of monkeys at an infinite number of typewriters, they will instantaneously produce the complete works of shakespeare, along with every other potential written work of the universe.
So doesn't that blow alway the concept of copyrights? Or is the RIAA going to go sue an infinite number of monkeys for an infinite ammount of money?
(Ohmish is kind of hard to reconcile with no Ohms).
Are not the Ohmish the ones that make Multi-Meters? Eh, maybe I'm wrong.
It's the queers. They're in it with the aliens. They're building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to God
I like you Stuart, you're not like the other people here in the trailer park.

well, honestly - I need some more coffee I think.
The first time I read it was a "Flush Attack" - and I thought, no the iLoo was a joke.
The next time flash was used I read it as "Flesh" and was thinking that a flesh attack might not be so bad.
Last but not least, I saw thousands of angry flash cards marching and attacking a server.
Making more coffee now.
