Wrong. It'd be like if a gun owner signed a contract with the gun company saying that anything that happened with said guns is their fault and then left them on the front lawn for all to enjoy.
No, but any blanket statements such as "Ripping isn't illegal" should take into account where most people will read them, in this case, the US and other less-enlightened countries.

Wouldn't it just be a matter of some easily-coded software to give it mp3 support? The proc is certainly fast enough to run it software.

Nope. It runs Linux.
Google does use IDE drives. It's one of their big famed techniques. They just raid the hell out of them. So we're talking a few bucks a gig, still.
But people won't use the full space anyway. Most people will probably use less than 10% of that, which is very doable for almost any company.
