  1. Robson Technology on Why Do Computers Take So Long to Boot Up? · · Score: 1

The technology will be launched sometime in 2007... i suspect middle of 2007... here's the link to some details http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1936630 ,00.asp ... you can also google for it..

  2. IT woes on Recruiting IT Students? · · Score: 1

This has always been a problem in US. You see something like this and it get blown in full proportions. You will see Lou Dobbs on CNN talking about off shoring everyday and "experts" talk about losing jobs. While it's true a lot of people lose their jobs to offshore market the overall thing I have seen is actual improvement. As for example the IT market in Midwest is growing tremendously. I have seen more IT jobs been put out there than others. The thing is people will just believe anyone who is shouting and not try to find out on their own what the situation is. Call it a bad PR.

Having said that I have seen enough bitching in slashdot itself showing the general mentality of IT geeks. No offence guys but this can be really attributed to what you hear everyday. There is never anyone who analyzes the overall picture which would show that they would need more people to manage here even if they offshore jobs to foreign countries inciting more jobs. Have you heard that lot of software companies in India and China actually open up branches here in US and hire people here to meet the needs of US companies? What does that tell you? Economics at its best. Just because we are going through a rough period, this is the situation.

I guess it is time to analyse the situation and make most of it rather than just bitching about it. My 2 cents.

I completely agree to this. I am a foreigner here and working in US. After coming here I have seen lot of american opinions compared to a "frog in the well". What you need to do is get out of the well and then respond.

I have lot of african friends in IT industry. So how did they get to know this. I have clients that operate our software back in south africa. Oh wait, they must be just clicking without knowing anything right? Agreed, the economy has to come a far way but providing means to develop this is as much necessary, that means free software, etc. Wasn't it also true that India was behind the curve 15 years ago and now we see most slashdotters bitching about losing jobs to them. Welcome to a global world. Stop living in the well!! Mod me flaimbait, but this is the truth.

  12. VideoGames and violence on Hillary, GTA, and High School Football · · Score: 1

It's absurd to say that playing a violent video game is the cause of violence in the society. The problem is more deeper and lies in how the person was raised and how he interacts with other people in his neighborhood. I have played plenty of violent games in my childhood and I am just fine and I have no urges of killing people on the streets. I have increasingly seen laws in US tacking baseless things than the root problems. One of the reasons might that on doing so might come and bite them in their behinds one day. I wonder when will someone realise this.

While I agree on some part of your argurment it is not entirely based on theft. As well all know all science progress has been due to the result of collaboration on various studies and deriving from it. Once the ideas drain out on western front, necessity will drive the people in Asia to come up with novel ways and new ideas. Besides necessity is the mother of invention. It is a crude cycle and it will never end.
