I believe you mean 'illegal combatants'. POWs have very clear rights as laid down by the geneva convention. 'Illegal Comabatant' is a highly nebulous term which is being used to deny these individuals their basic human rights.
These include lack of legal advice, no contact with their respective embassies and cases of alleged torture.
I'm not apologising for the thief, but surely punishment should be in line with the crime? Is your 'sense of safeness' worth the life of a man? If we're to follow this argument, I lose all my sense of safeness (sic) everytime I drive due to the standards of driving we see today. I should, therefore, be allowed to attach a minigun to the front of the car to deal with this!
The issue here is that the actions taken by the farmer were far beyond those that could be reasonably construed as defence. To shoot an unarmed man, in the back, without warning is, regardless of the circumstances, murder. (In my mind, anyway)

I think you mean the case of Tony Martin. Whilst I don't know enough about the case to make an informed comment, I gather that the issues are disparity in sentences (due to guilty vs not guilty pleas) and the attempts to sue. Speaking as a UKian, I'm in two minds on this whole affair. On the one hand I'm a firm believer in 'a man's home is his castle'. On the other hand, I would be concerned if you could get away with shooting an unarmed intruder in the back...
Its not the teachers job to judge me as a person, its the teachers jobs to judge my work. This is exactly why we need machines, because certain people such as yourself want to judge the person and not the work.
"This person doesnt dress nice, this person has long hair and looks like a hippy, this person is always late, I dont like this person"
Its these feelings that can bring an A to a B or a B to a C.
Which is why anonymous marking has been brought in at most UK universities. Problem solved! (to an extent- it makes finding out the author of work non-trivial, thus proving intent where necessary...)
I shouldn't think so. Unlike ye-olde-file-swapping debate, all this constitutes is allowing two private individuals to get together to arrange a sale of legally owned items.
Obviously this ignores the fact that a university may have forbidden the sale of second hand books as part of it's student contract. In which case you've got bigger things to worry about!
I've never had that problem, I must confess! But after 5+ years working live sound, I'm hard pushed to tell if the mp3's playing, let alone worrying about dynamic range;)
'Best you can afford' is very true in this game, I'll grant you that. One thing that will (by will, I actually mean 'might, at some point, possibly due to some other factor entirely) come about ardour et al is it will make consumers ask the likes of digidesign (ok, not them, but work with me) 'I can do x,y and z with this free linuxy malarky. Suddenly your low end packages don't seem very attractive. Watcha going to do about it?' which (should, in an ideal world) prompt a round of cost cutting, thus making quality gear affordable. Of course, in an ideal world, my boss'd let me buy a midas heritage. (and a crane to get the thing up the stairs...)
I'd disagree- MP3's are 'good enough' for most people's needs. Unless you have a really good speaker/amp combo next to your computer, you're not going to sweat the differnce. Then there is portability a la nomad, iPod, whatever.
If you have the cash, then yes, there is no substitute for quality hardware. It does strike me as a shade snobby to look down on those who use their "...Behringer mixer plugged into my Audigy card and uing Cool Edit to do all my mastering!" The more choice an aspiring muso has, the better. If people can get into recording music without a huge amount of outlay, then surely that can only be a good thing?
Funny you should mention it, but IIRC, one of the big gripes of the US is the EU requirement that anything made with gm modified $STUFF is labelled differently. This presents a problem insofar as it would not allow US products to compete fairly in the EU marketplace because there is a much wider takeup of GM modified maize/soya etc in US food products.
As my job involves organising large events (not lan, but club nights/concerts/smaller/festivals- biggest attendance so far 3000) I'd agree with the majority of posts so far- I won't comment on the techie side cause I'll be shot down in flames...

Once you start charging for entry you are in a whole differnt world of liability. For example, are you insured should someone sue for non provision of something or other?
Maintaining order- Don't think you can just haul someone out for being a twat- Security need to be identifiable: Numbers on shirts, people! Preferably they should not play at all so that they can't be accused of bias. In an ideal world, they should come from a reputable company.
Fire!
Is your venue appropriate? If you have a 1000 capacity venue, that's more likely than not to be it's standing capacity. Seated is more likely to be 400. Fire lanes- make sure there are passages at least 2m wide in the layout and they are clearly marked and kept clear!
On a related note- Power. RCD's are absolutely essential. Don't rely on the house sparky, get someone in you trust.
(plug- Fantastic Illuminations for all your temporary power needs!)
First Aid Overkill? possibly not. Last thing you need is some kid's heart to fail, or someone to have taken something less than appropriate and then you're fucked and standing on a manslaughter charge. In the UK, I'd suggest volunteers from Red Cross or St John's ambulance.

If you have to ask what this is then you need to speak to your local authority. At least two months in advance.
This is a 2 minute brainstorming session and I haven't even got started. The factors involved can be immense, so don't be afraid to talk to people like the HSE.
Or even drop me a line if you're in the UK and you need some guidance!
The latest study found that the use of mobile telephones can adversely affect navigation and communication functions, producing significant errors on instrument displays and background noise on audio outputs.
If it's coming from the CAA, you can reasonably assume they did use mobile phones in a study about mobile phones.
What? You plan on installing your APs right next door to theirs? How are they using up the spectrum? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the 802.1x allows for frequency hopping and other cool shit to avoid exactly this problem....
And of course they can charge you. It's for their bandwidth. They are not charging for the spectrum. Divot.
Tragedy of the commons- It's the buzzword the cool kids are using...
You can have as many magazines as you like! Provided you've got nothing to a) put in them or b) to put them in... (Yeah I know, some deactivated weapons, war trophies yadadada, but now I've spoilt the joke...)
I hate spam as much as the next man (assuming the next man isn't a spammer) so I've decided to run Jackpot on an old laptop.
(Yeah, I could do it with $oss_os_of_your_choice but knowing my luck I'd end up with a real open relay!).
It's sat inside the NAT box with port 25 directed to it. Any other ports I should crack open? The other problem is how to maximise it's effects. At whom should I direct my emails/phone calls/bricks through windows when the hits start rolling in?
I'm in the postion where I my work can't come home with me so I'm looking for a project to get my teeth into....
I would rather like it if we went back to some kind of skilled trade system.
I'd second that! Sometimes I can't help but feel we'd be better off with some sort of apprentice system rather than churning out yet more graduates. I wouldn't (for obvious reasons) suggest that we don't need compsci grads, but there's a definite advantage to having skilled tradesmen/women in a workforce....
Using them in the venue I work in and they really do look great!
YMMV on whether they're appropriate for your home application though! I would suggest, however, if you are going down the hardcore-lots-of-new-fixtures-everywhere route that you consider using fixtures that talk DMX, which'll make life a darn sight easier when you want your rooms to slowly change colour over the day!

He may be referring to 'Flair' bartending- sort of thing you'd get at a trendy (read: expensive) nightspot in london, paris et al.
I didn't think such a thing existed until I read it in a trade rag!

The DTI regs on redundancy and the regs on breach of contracts.
And, as an added bonus, the definition of various types of dismissal.
