i mean already we have seen the discovery channel and the learning channel go towards mainstream media.
I mean is it really possible to have a channel devoted just to science and still make a profit?
i just don't see it happening... not big enough market and the costs would be too high. eventually they will fold and become more mainstream.

If we followed this mode of thinking, we would no investment in the arts, or other science fields. It is up to a society to decide where the funds are best put to use. If we actually did what u want, then basically we all should become medical doctors and try to save as many people....
Although India has developed an cryogenic rocket engine, why does everyone point fingers at it being trigger happy. I mean, for comparison, look at the US- basically, they have declared more wars, and have shown interest in pursuing smaller nuclear bombs- esp to attack bunkers.
It seems to me the americans are far more likely to pull the trigger than India.
Whats to prevent the other countries with nukes, just to nuke the US, when the odds turn against them. Basically, they know they lost-- better to turn the tide right before they completely lose.
Even if there is an open audit of the source and a paper trail, most of the canidates will still request a recount of the ballots by hand. Call me a bit old fashion, but I still believe that the best way to hold an election is to do it on paper rather than on a computer. Even the most secure open-source OS can have security holes....
It seems that microsoft has found that its own search technology is far inferior to that of google. Now the only way to compensate would be either to improve their own technology (laugh here) or to buy out google.
since google is still a private corporation, it would be hard for them to do that. But once google goes public-- it becomes fair game.
Is it really possilbe to archive all the information?
basically you need to copy all the webpages and documents, and the changes of those documents. Movies files and such take up a lot of space.
so how are they going to manage something like this-- it'd probably use up terabytes upon terabytes of disk space.
The calcs seem more expensive than the TI-89..
basically what incentive high schools have to switch their cirriculum to use the HP calcs. Thats where most of the engineers i know started using them...
Once we have the technology to create WMD, there is no way of going back to ground zero.
There will always be war hawks who believe that we need them for defense.
The next best strategy, IMHO is to actually become trading partners with other nations with the potential to create WMD. That way in both countries there will be people who will oppose war because it does not serve in their own personal interest.
This idea and tactic was actually the basis of forming the EU, in order to prevent Germany and France from going to war-- create groups of people that have economic interest in the other nation-- to create hedge way against the war hawks.
Actually if I remeber correctly, in the orignal ten commandments, it actually states that thou shalt not commit murder.
Theres a slight difference in the wording. but the meaning changes entirely.
I for one agree with barret in this. If china goes ahead and, as a nation promotes one processor/operating system over another- just on merits of where it is developed, over letting the markets decide, undoubtedly they might be at a compartive disadvantage.
Instead they should continue to use the pirated versions of word and excel that they have running around....
Currently in india, as soon as a community gets electric power, the first thing they buy is a TV.
The tv becomes their gateway to the rest of the world-- a one way feed.
if you really want, you should build a computer that costs 150$ linux machine and uses the tv as a monitor-- i think that would be a more ideal solution. Basically, if walmart can make linux machines and sell them at $200, it shouldn't be that much harder to bring the price down by 50.
in cost in rupees, that would be 7500/- cheaper than the simputer.
At least now there will more competition in the IM market...
Also, i was under the impression that AOL had to make their IM networks interoperable with other services (MSN messenger) as deals of the AOL time warner merger...
But i guess in the face of direct competition, this wasn't really possible...
I dun think that this is really going to work...
the kids are going to find new ways of getting to servers overseas, using proxies etc..
hmmm.... oh well
sounds similar to the great firewall of china

My brother found an ipod on ebay for about 150$. Although it was a bit scratched up, it was still good.

yes but you forget about nukes.

well here is another frivolous lawsuit over something that shouldn't be patentable.
seriously-- we need to overhaul the way patents are assigned... more ppl need to vote...

I wonder if there is a way to get rid of the ads altogether if we buy the software commerically? That way I would be sponsoring mandrake and NO ADS
