  4. If you want super duper fast updates, you go with the pixel phones, or iPhones. A few Android vendors are "fast" with getting the updates out, but, you have to look at it from the sales & marketing side. It's not in the "best interest" of the manufacturers or carriers to spend the time to test, fix & send out updates, when people "generally" don't keep their phones for more than 2 years. With the prices of phones being in the stratosphere, maybe people will start keeping them longer. Just look after the latest iPhone announcement this past fall, how the number of people that took advantage of the cheap battery replacement went up.

Oh, gee...they know EXACTLY where you are, when you were somewhere, how long it took you to get from point A to point B. The non removable battery, then SEALING it in, to "promote" the waterproof idea, along with the crippling of the software for a 2-3 year old battery, got people in the habit of just chucking them and buying a new one every couple years. Althought I'm not an iphone user, but around the SD80x chips, phone got pretty much "fast enough" for about 99% of users. I'm mean get real..people run a couple apps at a time, aren't trying to solve quantum physics. But now that the CHEAP iPhone/Samsung phones are in the 800 dollar range, and the top of the line is well over 1,000 dollars, people are starting to say wait a minute...my "slow" phone just got FASTER with a new battery, how much money have I WASTED year after year for a snappy new phone, when it was Apple slowing my old phone down, just to talk me into a NEW overpriced phone.

  20. Hey Cook...you're admission of THROTTLING older phones "because it would extend battery life", kind of let the cat out of the bad to what was really going on. You purposely slowed them down, because after a NEW OS update, people would notice the slower phone, go to an Apple store, the apple employee would tell them the older hardware couldn't handle the new OS, in an effort to push them into a NEWER more EXPENSIVE phone, that of course would seem MUCH faster. With the battery replaced, their OLD phone appears MUCH faster. Couple that with the insane pricing of the phones, and it's no wonder people aren't buying these overpriced phones. Not just Apple, but the pricing of Samsung has gotten out of hand too.

  21. SMALL home reactors would be the best bet, but the "public utility companies" will never allow that! They would use any an all means $$$$$$ to stop people from disconnecting permanently from the grid.

  22. That's what I've been saying for a few years. My last 3 phones were Huawei. Never had an issue, phones were great, good value, great battery life, but, living in the USA, they getting kicked out, getting one that works in the USA might be an issue going forward, and, getting updates (Huawei isn't known for pushing out updates quickly LOL), I had to give up and get something else. "But Huawei spies for the Chinese government". Yeah, and Google, Apple, Samsung, LG, HTC and others don't spy? The golden egg right now is DATA. You'd have to be an idiot not to think the U.S. government doesn't spy. FBI, NSA, CIA and other alphabet agencies. When they started blocking Huawei, my FIRST thought was the Apple/Samsung bunch paid a TON of money to keep them out. Think about it. For better/worse, most consumers in the USA STILL BUY their phones from "carriers" or retail carrier sites. People in the USA, since the explosion of mobile phones are "use" to paying cheap for phones, over time. With phones in the 600-1200 dollar range, people opt to get a carrier phone, no interest, spread out over time. Carrier branding makes it much easier for Apple & Samsung (and a couple smaller players) to maintain a very high retail price, spread it out over time, plus a win for the carriers to keep people "locked in". You think they wouldn't pay a little money under the table to keep things the way they are? They probably got scared when at&t and then Best Buy said they were going to carry the Huawei brand, given how popular it is elsewhere in the world.

  23. Over 500 bucks is too much on Did Apple Retail Prices Get Too High in 2018? Consumers Say Yes. (usatoday.com) · · Score: 1

Considering 99% of consumers will never get close to maxing out the processor speed (no, I'm not talking about people on /. or tech blogs), any processor within the last few years is "fast enough". Consumers are stupid, per se. Just look at the price of a pickup truck or SUV. 60-100k? MOST smartphones, including the iPhones, have build costs of around 200-400 dollars, minus marketing & advertising, but "command" $1,000-1500 bucks? I read somewhere that the markup on iPhones is around 60% from cost. Yeah, if you can get away with it, good for business, but, I think consumers are finally saying enough is enough, considering the "what you get for your money" aspect. Most of these phones in the last few years are gimmick updates. Flashy colors, notch/no notch, bezel, no bezel, 2,3,4 or more camera lenses. And, does it REALLY improve the user experience? NOPE

  24. More gimmicks is all you get from smartphone companies these days. Notches, no notches, pretty colors, more camera lenses, smaller batteries slim & sexy, no bezels, higher prices. 3D? Really? Thought that went out of style in the 50's, then the 90's?

  25. Deep state punishes on FCC To Suspend Most Operations Thursday if the Partial Government Shutdown Continues (fcc.gov) · · Score: 0, Flamebait

This is how it works with most of government. They want something, the public doesn't. Say they want to raise a gas tax, the people say no, then the state "punishes" the people by shutting off services. Same with the fed...the PUBLIC wants a wall, the deep state doesn't. (republicans want illegals here to depress wages. democrats want them here to prop up welfare & illegal or legal voters rolls). So, the "government" shuts down things like parks, VA, and on and on to "punish" them. Until people get fed up, and start making government afraid of the people, with a 90+ percent reelection rate, you think the government gives a crap what the people want?
