It could sneak on just as easy with an x86 based AMD.
OLPC has an x86 based spec, so sure it could, but that's not my point.
Anyway, who cares, if someone wants to pay extra and put windows on it, it's their business. It's not my job (or yours, or anyones) to dictate what OS can be used on someones computer.
But this is closer to my point. If both MS and Intel were on board, you can bet that soon someone would be deciding what OS some developing-world government is putting on its OLPCs. And if this is a charity project, perhaps we do have a job in making sure, or at least in being concerned, that government procurement offices don't fall for MS's rhetoric.
Although it does represent a loss of funds and perhaps some technological support, it also weakens the Wintel aspect of the machine and stresses the philosophical and philanthropic goals of OLPC. And I assume that Negroponte can function perfectly well with AMD, who will now presumably have a lock on this market and the goodwill it generates.
But a central task is to recognize microfacial expressions -- a flash of feelings that in a fraction of a second reflects emotions such as fear, anger, surprise or contempt, said Carl Maccario, who helped start the program for TSA.
My contempt for the whole post-9/11 security farce has already led me to my first extra screening session (in Fargo, of all places, where I argued for the right to lock my luggage to protect it from the thieves in baggage handling). I am not going back to the USA, and I am a white Canuck.
But my contempt for face-police would be unsurmountable.
They know this - this project is pure provocation designed to smoke out reactions, which can then be manipulated how they see fit. Of course, I admit the possibility that it may lead to some arrests that stop a specific terrorist event, or interrupt a cell. But the fact that America can make a sizable amount of its citizens so afraid of their own shadows that they would grin and bear such face-police in the off-chance of a noble goal being met, well, that scares me.
I was gonna mod you up to save you from obtuse mods, but you're AC. Your point, nevertheless, is right on target.
Things like the police and civil society were formed to protect us from each other. When you stick something up like a db of criminals and their houses, you effectively remove this protection, and create a society of fear, which becomes a society of hate.
But to make time for RIAA-orchestrated police raids, I guess you need to relieve the police of some of their responsibilities.
i would mod you up so quickly had i points!!!! (for any thais reading: 555!)
i lived in thailand for a year, and let me tell you, the ants can get anywhere, even in my 20th floor condo. but they usually - obviously - only collect where there is some food source. so i suggest that guy had a bigger problem than ants in his hard drive. prolly dropped a chocolate bar or something in the box. our condo would always remain ant free, until, that is, something dropped on the floor. then, within a half-hour, there would be a single file of ants to and from the wall to the food.
almost every bus i was in also had an ant colony. and taxis? well, they normally only had mosquitoes.
Perhaps they are really saying: "Hey criminals - we can't listen to you on Skype. Really. So be sure to use Skype. Because we can't listen to you. Really. So Skype is safe for you to use since we can't listen to you. Feel free to discuss your criminal plans in full detail on Skype, because we can't listen to you. Really."
To me, the "Good Game" line has always been a PC way to be an ass. If you are the looser, telling the winner that they played a good game seems kind of stupid. If you are the winner, it always comes across as condescending.
Oh come on now. There's nothing wrong with playing a hard-fought game and then wishing the other team well. If the other team wins - likely, they did play a good game. What's wrong with acknowledging that? To carry over the passion of the game into post-game socialization is almost pathological.
I play competetive baseball (hardball - none of this sissy softball crap for me) about as passionately as one can without being an ass. I ride the other team hard, etc. But when the game's done I can still enjoy a beer with them, after shaking their hands and congratulating them on their victory (normally) or being gracious in our victory (no longer too often, I am afraid).
I have no probs with teaching one's kids to say "I'll get you next time" - but they must also learn to be gracious in both victory and defeat. To only stress revenge is as bad as the wussification against which you are fighting.
your children can still enjoy an american education - how does funding foreigners hurt them? it sounds like that old argument about all the foreigners taking our jobs, only here, it's education.
of course, the places are limited. so, since competition is an issue, i guess american kids simply need to be smarter.
I - a Canadian - earned two advanced degrees in Belgium, where tuition cost me around EUR 500 a year; Belgian taxes paid the rest. Like me, I bet more than a few of those foreign grad students in America will stick around and end up contributing back to your precious tax dollars.
Even if they don't, they still return home to spread your way of life, which is part of the reason they are allowed to come in the first place.
Original members John Lydon (Johnny Rotten), Steve Jones, and Paul Cook hit the studio together for the first time in 30 years, hooking up with original producer Chris Thomas to maintain the feel of the recording. Additionally, the original analog sound desk, built in 1969 for producer George Martin at Air Studios in London, was utilized for aural authenticity
so they go to all that trouble (original producer, soundboard, etc.), but no glen matlock, who was responsible for their arrangements? hmmm...
some people can do good or even great things with limited equipment. give them better equipment, and they can do better things.
i am largely a low-fi guy, but i can appreciate the difference between - say - production work by lindsey buckingham or the neptunes, and that by - say - steve albini or lou barlow. indie speaks to me, but the high-priced production of the studio-backed pros is simply far superior.
i am unsure if the fee scale produced above is accurate, but i know such producers can be worth their fees, if you aim for their signarture sound. nobody with ProTools can approach Tusk or Yankee Foxtrot Hotel.
RTFA! i mean, really - modding this comment interesting is one of the laziest actions i've ever seen on /.
without intel, ms has less of a chance of sneaking onto the machine. and that's why i said weaken(ed), not removed.

Exactly.

Try driving in Bangkok!!!! Any given light was at least a 20 minute wait. Sometimes, up to 30 min. Still, I loved the place.

i hope this does not affect my university's plans to eventually role out tb 2, which simply rocks as a mail client.

there's no redundancy in that sentence ...
