I think I must have missed the point in time when Half-Life was revolutionary. I can imagine it was incredible at the time, but really, it aint that great anymore.

This is another example of why stealing property and violating copyright should not be confused. I'm sure you're an intelligent person, and the common technique of calling music piracy "stealing" has caused even you to mix up analogies.

What's the point in making it so exactly logical it is no fun? If you don't enjoy the darkness fine, just say so. But saying the darkness aspect of the game is silly because it is easy to tape a torch to the gun and thus it is not enjoyable is just daft. It's a game. It would be less fun if it was 100% believable. If you disagree with that statement then I am sure there are other games for you, but it seems daft.

Did you get similarly annoyed that in Doom1/2 you could jump of a ledge of any height and not die? Or that in mario just touching a goomba would kill you? Or that in doom3 exiting the mars base into a very low atmosphere didn't make you explode due to the pressure differences?

There always has to be a certain level of compromise when it comes to believe with any work of fiction. Surely you know this?

Yeah quite. I'm quite a way into the game now. At first I couldn't hack the darkness too well and struggled to fight/find my way about. Now it is easy, I've got the hang of it and it is awesome. You need to encourage the monsters to come into the light in order to fight them more easily, it adds a whole new strategy element I haven't seen in other games before.

Graphically it rules with the darkness too. And boy is it scary. Rules.

This mod is for people who have no patience in my humble opinion.

I also agree a demo would have helped, and in fact you have to wonder if the time-tested Id method of shareware would have prevented this too. You get a third of the game for free with the shareware method Id have always used. Would the 30,000 member torrent be for the shareware package rather than the full game if a shareware version was released first?

    I couldn't guess.

It's not as much a problem as people say. I used to pirate a lot of games, but guess what, I was a kid. I couldn't afford any games! So me and my mates shared them around. Our group piracy led to us becoming obsessed with games as it happens, and I reckon we ended up buying more games between us because we pirated them around.

Nowadays I can afford games and I buy them. However I do play less games than I used to, I have less time, and perhaps it is also because it is harder to pirate the games heh. But nowadays I have money and will pay if I like something.

Software is an funny industry, you have to accept that some copying will go on because it is easy to do so. If the industry can't turn a profit with the traditional one person - one sale business model then perhaps they are looking at the economics of the industry incorrectly?

No, patents are supposed to encourage people to innovate by giving companies or individuals a small amount of time where they can be anti-capitalist and produce a situation that is worse for the consumer, ie a monopoly.

Generally it seems to me though that companies are extremely willing to innovate, that's how they make money afterall, producing new products. They seem to only use patents to make extra bucks or as a diplomatic "we could stop your business" message to other companies.

Patents are practically needless in most industries. Industries with major research costs should be granted the rights to patents in certain situations, not willy-nilly. Even then i reckon that they would be huge amounts of innovation without the damn things. People want to make money, they'll innovate like mad patents or not.
