Well I must an exception to that rule as Finnish is my first language but I tend to swear more often in English.

Now that I think about it the reason is probably that swearing in English feels more mild (and more socially acceptable). I generally switch to swearing in Finnish only when I'm truly upset.

  3. Walkthroughs on The Dilemma of Level vs. Skill In MMOs · · Score: 1

I use walkthroughs (mostly in single player RPGs) for exactly one reason. I hate missing out on content.

It's very annoying to find out later on that if you had just taken the other road in the beginning of chapter 3 you'd have found the rare weapon X. Or that gaining skill Y would have required you to choose the third conversation option with NPC Z.

Sure you could find many of these hidden extras if you played through the game several times, searched everywhere and tried everything but how many of us has time for that?

  4. Exactly. on Lenovo Tinkers With Larger Delete and Escape Keys · · Score: 1

It's terribly annoying when a keyboard decides to place something else in the top-left corner.

My previous keyboard had a sleep button in that location. More than once I was playing some game, tried to hit Esc quickly without looking and ended up cursing when the computer entered sleep mode... At least it was configurable so I could then disable it...

  5. Not good on ASCAP Wants To Be Paid When Your Phone Rings · · Score: 1

Yea sure... Sounds great until you consider the practical implications.

If everyone including me has a ringtone sounding like a normal phone, then everytime someone's cell phone rings I have to check whether it's mine.
If everyone uses personalized ringtones ('shit music') then I will know right away whether it's my phone. (Unless someone happens to have the exact same tune selected which is damn rare...)

And no, using vibrate is not an answer. If I have anything else in my pocket, I usually never even notice the vibration.

I'd say pick two. Hell, most of the time it's pick one !

I've yet to find a type of condom that I couldn't break just by having sex.
Yes, even the 'extra strong' types. It's one of the downsides of having a much thicker than average member. And 'thin' and 'reliable' tend to be mutually exclusive.

I've yet to find a non-latex condom that's big enough.
Their added durability may allow for thinner condoms but they're of no use if I can't even put them on! (Damn euro standard size condoms) At least the normal condoms can be stretched a little if they're not big enough to just roll on....
Plus the non-latex condoms tend to be a bit too costly for constant use anyway.

  7. Re:But would they come? on Reliable Male Contraceptive In the Works · · Score: 1
    Bullshit.

Like someone else has so aptly described, having sex wearing a condom feels like fucking a rubber duck. Try that for intimacy.

As for spontaneity: It may be fast to put them on if
    • You've had practise
    • You have condoms that are big enough to just roll on
    • You happen to have some nearby
    • You can get the damn package open (not always that easy if you have something slippery on your fingers)

Plus if you spontaneously decide to go for a second round five minutes later you'll need another one.

  8. Re:Size on Reliable Male Contraceptive In the Works · · Score: 1

Indeed. The problem here is the euro standards for condoms and the 'standard size' is clearly too small for me.
I can still _use_ them, but there's no way to just roll them on; I have to first stretch them to get them past the widest part.

And condoms break way too easily if you're thicker than average.

Hell, the one thing I'm thankful for is that I'm not allergic to rubber. I have yet to see a condom that would be both made from a different material and big enough.

Condoms are still better than some other options though...
Contraceptive foam gave me an allergic reaction so I couldn't pee normally for a day!
Pills all caused huge mood swings. It's no fun trying to coax your wife from under the table when she's there crying for no reason. And this happened about twice a week...

Well, most of your points just mean that the GUI needs to be done right...

    1) How about a separate page that basically lists the currently selected settings? You select the settings you want and can then see the corresponding CLI command to accomplish the same.
This would also make it easier to move to using the CLI stuff if you want. (Similar to how tools work in Windows Server 2008)
    2) Tooltips? It would certainly beat hunting through the man pages...
    3) Yes, CLI is of course better for scripts but the power of GUI comes from discoverability.
    4) Who says there should be no CLI?
    5) Umm, yes it would. I can manage by going through the man pages 5 times to find the suitable settings but finding the correct settings in a logically grouped GUI would be SO much easier for a normal person.
    6) True, but the whole point of the exercise was about the usefulness of GUI vs CLI.

As for /. the WASD navigation is more of an annoyance than a feature. If I alternate between several windows and accidentally have focus on the Firefox window (with /. open) when I start typing the result is always a lot of cursing and scrolling to get back to where I was previously.

  22. Oblivion was NOT good on Fallout 3 Gets Leaked, Goes Gold · · Score: 5, Insightful

I've played both Fallout 2 and Oblivion and I sincerely hope Fallout 3 will be nothing like Oblivion.

The autoscaling of everything was pretty much the worst thing in O3.
It meant that you could go and beat the Big Bad Guy with a total wimp. It meant that if chose your skills wrong, you'd get slaughtered just by traveling along the main road when you were on a high enough level.
I meant that there was almost no point in exploring. You could search the most remote ruins and only find broken knives if you were on low level and once you had enough levels under your belt, every damn critter dropped stuff worth a fortune.

Lots of side quests? Sure. Your choices make a difference? Oh really...
Sure you could choose if you wanted to join the mage guild or the fighter guild or thief's guild or save the world or just do all of these. None of it mattered except within that quest. Sure you just saved the world, became the top fighter on arena and became the leader of the mage's guild - but when you decide to join the fighter's guild, no one has even heard of you. Hey, if it had been more like 'Oh, you may think you're the big hero, but in here you're a nobody' I'd have been overjoyed but the harsh reality was that all the quests were totally separate.

And did you have actual choices? What if you wanted to be the good guy and actually arrest the notorious thieves guild leader? Nope, as soon as you joined the thief's guild, even your journal assumed you had become a bad guy. And the only options were to complete the quests as a bad guy or to totally ignore them. I've heard one of the last quests even involved a 'traitor' who was basically trying to get the thief's guild leader arrested - and you could not actually leave the room unless you killed him. Choices indeed...

I don't even want to talk about combat except to say that compared to the highly tactical, engaging battles in Fallout 2, Oblivion was just totally boring.

Now Fallout 3 may turn out to be a good game, but after Oblivion I have serious doubts about it.
