  1. Who is next in line for getting licensed on what? on SCO Run-Time Licenses: Get 'em While They're Hot! · · Score: 1

Next, I imagine that SCO will be after our kids to pay for licensing to watch Sesame Street ("Brought to you by the letter S", no less), since they have been using the letters S, C and O (among others) for years now...

That wouldn't be acceptable to satisfy their obligations pursuant to the GPL.

"their" being SCO's, I would doubt that they would care since they have already tried whining about GPL being "invalid" and "illegal".

I work with someone that actually knew the executive jokers when they were Novell employees. He said they were not quite sane then either.

Criddle's uranium experiments involve lowering the acidity of the microbes' environment and nourishing them with ethanol to "get them all happy," as Criddle says. Doing so encourages them to go to work on the uranium by reducing oxides of the radioactive uranium and thereby rendering them insoluble.

What will the microbes consume for the eventual hangover?

  22. Is business really ready? on GPS Slowly Changing How Things Are Done · · Score: 3, Interesting

We worked on a turn-key project over a year ago (before matters got screwed by an acquisition), and one aspect of the product was to track GPS position and record it every so often with a few other real-time parameters, such as speed, direction, and average MPH. The project completed the first product phase of deployment, but actually using the GPS data (while recording WAS working) was slated for phase 2. Unfortunately, I think the whole thing got mothballed because the company receiving the product was not technically inclined one bit. Such a waste of effort. It would have helped cut their yearly expenses down a lot.

  25. Looks like a bunch of 0's and 1's to me. on Binary Package Formats Compared · · Score: 0

Just depends on how you shuffle them around.

E.g. Packages on FreeBSD are usually tarballs as gzip or bzip2. "Meta" data is usually the +CAPS files. Validation is usually an external MD5 checksum.

Too bad there are so many distribution differences that one (simple) standard can not be made to compete with the (possible?) ease of (*cough*) W*****s installers, but that would be like saying, "why can't we all be the same blood type."
