    Actually my first thought was an OS X box with a smart shared folder, and a couple of automator actions(I have done similar things on my home box). This entire thing could be easy to setup and adminster. Best off it doesn't need to be on a server but someone's desktop. though a Unix shell script would do just as well.

    As for WSH I have never been able to get it to work. though I can easily do bash scripting. But those are my limitations.

    Yep they violate the fact that it requires a Novell netware server to run, and MSFT kept breaking and changing the networking API so much that Novell couldn't keep up with the ever shifting target.

    It's why I give the Samba guys credit. MSFT has purposely broken code in their networking to slow down others from using it outside of windows. Listen to the Samba guys talk about it sometime. Even with XP and win2k3 msft is still at it.

    Um what are you smoking?

    16-bit windows and dos apps only work if they are non-trivial. I can't upgrade our work computers out of windows 95 and windows 98 because we depend on non-trivial software that doesn't run on the NT line. So MSFT is just as bad as everyone else. Try running some of the early versions of word in XP or win2k3 it doesn't work, and the modern versions can't read the older formats. been there. tried that, considered it lost.

    Most linux problems aren't binaries but library and their various and multitude of locations.

    Ironic or sad? If politicians think there is something fishy going on with Diebold's equipment then there has to be some major design flaws(other than using windows as the base OS)

    I am waiting for e-Ink to appear. If they can get a flexible film like display that uses power only to change the display then it would be great. You could build the computer part into a binder and just unroll the display read and tap a button to change pages.

    oh well Ican dream and wait.

    Hence why I bought a 12" powerbook. but now basically any 12" under 5 pound computer is great.

    Try something like the Acer tablet. If tablet's would just drop in price a bit I might even switch to using windows once in a while.

    It would be interesting to find out if OS X server has a different defualt configuration than OS X.

    As my default installations of Pather and Tiger both had the firewall on and all the other services off. I checked during my setups.

    I don't have an X-serve or OS X server edition so I can't find out.

    Only the guilty should give in to those tactics. That's why MSFT almost always pays up.

    Um you better go reread copyright law again. You have a legal right to copy all music you want from the radio or TV.

    As long as it's for yourself and you don't distribute that material.

    the broadcast flag prevents such things. hell they want to make tivo illegal unless it's sanctioned.

    I will listen to music or watch TV the way I want to not how I am told to by others.

    Go to a command window and type "sudo rm -rf /".

    I tried that but Windows responded command not found. I thought Windows supported old style commands like that?

    Okay I was kidding I don't own a windows box anymore. The people who would try that on a Mac wouldn't know how to get to a terminal window anyway.

    a recently symantec update did more damage to users systems than the so called recent virus script looking like an image did to all the computers it actually attacked.

    So yea symantec sales would be slow.

    Aopen has a case/motherboard sized almost to that of the mini Tigerdirect I can't help you with the other components. personally I prefer OS X. I can get any linux app I want I can run x windows apps, plus I have all the driver support including wireless, which an be a hit or miss depending on which wireless card you buy. personally though i am wanting for version B of the Intel Mac Mini unless something better comes along.

    It's actually what I do. I have modified my V551 quick buttons to include a shortcut to bluetooth. I press two buttons and my phone is seeking my headset.

    By leaving bluetooth on all the time I take 1/3 or more out of my phone's battery life. It's short enough as it is let alone with bluetooth, and trying to surf the web on the damn thing.

    I don't mind colour screens if I could modify the display a bit.(in the Phone book, make each contact group a different color, personal, family, work, etc)

    If the Community doesn't expect any code back then why are they complaining?

    I can see if it was of a license in which they had to give out the modified code(the GPL, APL, whatever Webcore is under) but the kernel? That's BSD based and the community was complaining about it. The issue has been resolved(a minor error) but if that's the case why were they complaining to begin with. After all it's just BSD code.

    Basically for what's in Darwin Apple doesn't have to release source code at all. Samba, Apache, Webkit(Safari's core) and various other pieces have to have the modified source released, but the kernel, drivers, and the entire BSD sub layer doesn't have to be released at all. that is why apple choose the BSD license to begin with. They don't have to give back changes, and can fuck the community.

    Idiots like you need to stay in school and learn something. In the beginning there were bbs and closed networks. prodigy compuserve, Aol, Each service provided everything on their own content in a tiered system. Most allowed limited connections with the outside As the Internet began to take off, and people realized what a neutral and open platform could do they flocked to it. prodigy is gone, compuserve is a shadow of it's former self. MSFT was creating their own AOL, and decided to simplify things by providing dedicated content to internet users. AOL is forcing people off of slow dial-up connections to encourage broadband use.

    Tiered Internet services failed before. Why would they succeed now? I pay the Cable or DSL provider a fee to provide me with unlimited bandwidth to all sites. Not just their sites. How would you like to pay $.99 to apple for a song off itunes and $1.99 more on your ISP bill because you connect to the net through AOL and AOL is a MSFT partner? Or how much more would you pay to see news from CNN because your ISP is only a Fox news supporter.

    that is what your supporting. Just a way to rip off customers while actually degrading overall service.

    Oh and your ISP got slashdotted a couple of times, so if you want to post to and read slashdot from now on you have to pay $.99 a meg you download from slashdot.org Since you now have to use your ISP's branded browser it doesn't store cache files for slashdot so you have to pay a buck a visit on average.

    Whenever a politician or a company proposes an idea. imagine the way they can profit from it the most while doing the least work. That is the likely end result. Look at what Sony did with rootkits. of course you probably helped sony out of that one as well.

    As much as I agree with your idea(I hate registration just to view a website) I clicked on the link and could view it without problems. I didn't even notice it was a NY time site until you pointed it out.

    Maybe theyhave changed their policy on slashdot, to increase their ad revenue.

    G5's are only a tad slower than Opeteron's at the same speed. The big difference though is in servers. OS X is a lousy server with extremely poor thread creation. Where as Linux on a G5 rox's.

    Now for a desktop/workstation poor thread creation doesn't affect much after booting. Giving OS X an advantage there.

    How can a smart card which contains ID information that transmits via RF not be an RFID tag? It may be enhanced above a normal tag, it may be encrypted, but the underlining tech is still the same.

    Hence why I said it should be called RFRC basically an RFID chip is a radio frequency tag that transmits an ID number when activated. a smart card transmits more information. The difference between a barcode model number and a full page of "product information".

    It relys on the same basic technology and thus is just as easy to access the data stored. Now that data may be encrypted, but encryption never lasts long. Techincally what's the difference between a smart card and an RFID chip? a little extra memory, and a method for encrypting data? Big deal. give it timeand smart cards will be just as easy to get information out of. UK Identity cards aren't hard to access, you have a standard from which to work from.

    I hate to break this to you, but any card that has a contactless interface(ie hold the card near the reader) is an RFID setup. it should be RFRC Radio frequency responder chip. which the USA and the UK want to use in passports. hence why they are coming with faraday cage style bags.

    A smart card still needs to be swiped. I have one in my american express card. My roommates new debit card has an RFRC in it as well. As he can simple place his card on a special sign and have it read it.

    Um that already is a concern. With electrical systems just "accidently" put 36 volts to the motherboard and see what happens.

    This is like a side step more than an upgrade. Though it might handle cosmic radiation better leading to the space shuttle's having something more powerful than 486.(Note they have of upgraded to something a bit faster by now, my data is old).
