frankly h.264 is a brillant piece of work and i can't really begrude it's creators for patenting it and making a buck. it's VERY low cost and it's getting wide adoption because of the very reasonable terms it's licensed under.
if you want something like debian that isn't as cutting edge but stable, use freebsd it's far better. i admin'd freebsd boxes for years and it was a joy to work with.
market cap isn't a "real" measure. it's merely the share price x outstanding shares, it's not real money, just speculation. apple's value is probably more robust than googles though.... 156 billion for a web business? did we learn nothing from the dot com bubble????!!!!

download the 10meg boot cd on the freebsd site and download only the bare bones packages during the install.
