I never understand this about Slashdot.
Patents: Patent law is stupid and should be broken e.g. SCO, MS
Copyright: Evil pirates stealing music/games/software are bad.
One man's revolutionary is another's subversive
Surely the thought of helping starving artists who can only afford one Learjet should be enough to make people buy music, rather than solving world poverty?
I was unfortunate enough to watch an episode of Time Commanders. What would happen is that either the contestants would start losing an go around panicing, or they would forget to order a colum of infantry or whatever, who would just stand and get slaughtered before fleeing.
To be honest, I can't see this show being much better.
Also, hasn't there been a show called Decisive Battles already?
This really isn't a great way to do it. How about - install windows, turn on windows firewall, then install adaware, and keep patching regularly - I do this for lots of people and I never have a problem.
The rich man's solution to this is to buy a router with a firewall - they really aren't that expensive, and let you use more than one computer on the line.
As for Mozilla/Firefox being less suceptible to malware etc on a statistical basis, this is a no-brainer. People who would use an alternative browser also tend to be the type of people who patch their software.
Firstly, writing isn;t improving due to some fan fiction. Writing is improving due to the fact that people are reading more. Whereas 5+ years ago kids could get away almost entirely without reading, now they *have* to read to use the internet. This is especially true for those who will be reading more serious pages. Improved writing is a result of an improved vocabulary, logically this has to be the case.
Equally, grammar is declining simply because it isn't being taught. If you have ever taken a modern language, you will agree that you learn far more grammar in a year than you will have ever learnt in english. Solution? Get children learning a second language early.
It's a pity that there are a few errors in the maths:
They quote pi incorrectly (after the 9th decimal place)!
the 216 digit number quoted is 218 digits long
He (max) is drawing a phi (aka tau) curve, not, as he calls it, a theta curve
He expresses the golden ratio incorrectly.
Aside from that, it's a fantastic film, well worth watching.
Has anyone implemented a system where a service would be stopped if the ports next to it were scanned? i.e. if 1024, 1025, 1026, 1027 were scanned, a service running on 1028 would stop.
This game got lost when EA bought up Virgin, but anyoen who has played this on multiplayer will tell you that it has some of the best multiplayer action *ever*.
Of course you could always just buy a Creative Labs Zen (NX/Xtra), which already supports both mp3 and wma. Also the 30gig NX is about $120 cheaper than the 20gig iPod. Other features include USB 2.0 support, THX audio and replaceable batteries. Now why would anyone buy an iPod?
I'd also like to congratulate Slashdot on their 113692th article...

you can take the meteric system while you're at it.
It's spelt *metre* not meter.
"Greetings, Council of Slashdot." Oh dear, and I thought I was a nerd.
Of course, if you live in the UK, you can listen to the BBC. No adverts, so all you hear is what the DJs like. Not in the UK? Listen Online
Here are some photos from Winchester College, UK: Here and one that I took, Here, and Here (colour corrected)
Yes, but in all fairness, the x800 is substantially faster than the 9800

So you give this to a little kid about to undergo chemo.
:/
Five minutes later 'Game over, your patient is dead'
Well, I'm sure that cheered them up
Yeah, if they want to make people watch TV, they should have national free bradband week :).
How does this affect my tri-band phone? Also, this could lead to a large influx of second hand triband phones into places where they still work.
At least nobody techsploited slashdot by making a 'First Post'.
:p.
Probably because all the Americans are alseep
Kinda reminds me of the gadget they come up with in the film 'The First $20m is always the hardest'
M$ bought the rights to UT2l4 at the last minute :p

That's a much better idea. I'll try and give it a go.
Even so, it would provide an extra layer of security.

It's not much larger. See here
