" Recovery tools? On an external hardrive of some sort? What will they think of next?!"
RFTA:
"I think it's cool because we are packaging all this functionality into personal devices that people won't find a chore to carry around, and in many cases, already carry around. Moreover, the original purpose of the personal device is unaltered. For example, if it's an MP3 player, it will remain so."
That's the big difference, that you already have a ipod in your pocket.
"you probably got modded flamebait (as I would have modded you, had I had any points) for linking to a website that had a shameful hack type of "analysis" (can't really call it that though) and actually believing it without doing any due diligance on your part."
um, well if u would have bothered to read the page for, oh, three or four seconds (4 if ur a slow reader), u would have saw the link to their source,
a CNN exit poll.
but it's really not ur fault, no one on/. bothers to RFTA, which is a shame that they give non-reading idiots like you mod points.
"Harvard (rightly so) decided to not admit any of the 119..."
riiiiiiiight... because the last thing we want is technologically savvy students becoming our future leaders of america.
I say we stick with the losers in congress who keep f&$king up the internet.
If it was me they would have been given credit for "CS101: Intro to Computing".
Why are students punished for successfully navigating real world challenges to accomplish a goal? Sure hacking is bad, but just the fact they were able to do what they did should be worth something. Not like they were stealing money or credit cards, they were only looking at their own information that they would have received anyway in a few weeks.
If they're gonna kick out these students then I think they should require mandatory drug testing and background checks of all students for the same reason they kicked these students out: we dont want future leaders of america doing drugs or committing crimes do we?
next time i have a problem with a pricewatch seller I'm reporting their ass to the Commerce Commission.
I've tried to buy PCs on pricewatch, but when you call to order they tell you certain parts are "out of stock" and you'll have to wait XX weeks or buy a different, much more expensive part. If you decide to wait they keep emailing you offering to "upgrade" to the better components. If you decline they finally email you and say they can't fulfill the order and cancel your order.
I've had this happen more than once and next time I'm gonna report them.
"That would be like passing a law that makes it illegal for drug dealers to sell without a license."
actually this is more like passing a law for people that buy 100 guns a day vs the guy that just buys one gun.
The guy buying 100 guns a day is probably a dealer. The guy buying just one gun might be a murderer.
Honestly anyone familiar with ebay (and i'm hoping most the legislators know a little about ebay) will immediately see that this law would do absolutely nothing to the ebay scammer that tries to sell 5 brand new Dell laptops that he doesn't have, it'll only hurt the legitmate power sellers who have been selling 30 items a day for the past 5 years.
eBay's comment is interesting though:
"We do not believe the law applies to people who sell items on eBay or to eBay itself."
while the Sen. Larry Mumper told the paper "the legislature never intended it to apply to individuals selling items over eBay."
...... WTF????..........
UM,/., READ THE FUCKING ARTICLE! The Senator that WROTE THE LAW said "the legislature never intended it to apply to individuals selling items over eBay."
this is just a great example of sensationalism by a newspaper, by taking something COMPLETELY out of context and making a HUGE deal about it.
What's next, the bat boy is molested by the worlds fattest man??
I dont even use my DVD-ROM anymore, I just connected my Microwave up to my TV and PC and play all my movies through that now. It doubles as a burner too;)
and why was there no mention of noise?? Sorry but any review of a cooling system is worthless without covering how noisy the system is. There review didn't do the main thing a review is suppose to do: tell me what I need to know to decide whether to purchase the product. What if I dropped $750+ on a system just to find out it's too loud to sit next to for 16 hours a day?
They should have measured the sound somehow. 5 years ago PC noise wasn't a major concern, but now days you'll never read a review of a CPU cooler that doesn't give you a pretty good description of how loud the system is.
Phase 1. Make 400mhz handheld with 40 or 60 GB hd, 3.8-inch touch-screen LCD, CF slot, USB port, speaker, audio/video outputs, joystick and various buttons
Phase 2. Market it to a very small percentage of the population for a cheap price
Phase 3. = No profit!
Ok is it just me or does their marketing department suck? They created the perfect PocketPC killer and forgot to tell anyone and decided to use it to ONLY show photos and videos? Um, HELLO??
when i read/. articles I usually try to find the main point of the article, a few words that sum it up, and here all I can come up with is "video cards are moving to 512megs".
So? Is this some kind of milestone or something? Does/. run a story every time video cards increase their memory capacity? I couldn't find a 256mB story or a 128mB story, so I'm wondering why reaching 512MB is "Pushing The 512MB Barrier"? Seems like a logical progression to me, we had 16mB, 32, 64, 128, 256... what did you think was the next step? I can't blame ATI for telling everyone, of course the manufactur is going to tell everyone whenever they come out with bigger, better, faster, but why is this/. worthy?
wait wait, this is rich, let me get this straight: a web design company wrote a article saying what you're using now is the "old" sucky way and their new stuff is the way to go??
hold on! this is revolutionary!;)
Not that AJAX isn't great, i'm sure it is, but this is like reading a article on how great a new car is that was written by the manufacture. Perhaps a more unbiased article needs to be submitted before I believe it.
oh and mod me +5 flamebait cuz i have so much karma i'm sniffing clouds.
"Question is, which is the least "appropriate" appliance that Linux has been run successfully on? For example digital TV set-top box? Microwave oven? Toaster?"
bah!! No imagination!! Think outside the box! Like coffee maker!
oops ur right, ok i was just talking about the money taken straight from my paycheck, not the second taxing Americans get whenever they buy something... or hundreds of other taxings when you pay taxes on property and vehicles EVERY YEAR.
"Studies have shown that over a quarter of Koreans have broadband and that anyone who wants it can sign up--with some ISPs charging as little as $19 a month for DSL. I pay $30 myself, for a 1.5-megabits-per-second (mbps) connection--twice the speed of my $50-a-month service back home in the United States.'"
Ok is he listing real USD, or is he doing some kind of comparison of what it would be if it compared to the average American salary?
Here's a teacher's salary, about $2,200 a month. That site also claims taxes are only 5 to 10% which is much lower than what I'm currently paying in the US, I'm paying about 15% right now.
Considering that's probably what the average american salary is I'd have to say $19/mo DSL isn't a bad deal, but Yahoo/SBC offers "Up to 1.5 Mbps" DSL for $26.95/mo with a one year commitment so I don't see why his "I pay $30 myself, for a 1.5-megabits-per-second (mbps) connection" is so great, he's paying more for DSL than it is here!
Is this a great example of "move along folks, nothing to see here"?
"Price and Availability
The P620 is available immediately from stock. Single quantity price is $1,800 with a 1.1 GHz CPU."
wow, only 2 grand for a 1.1 ghz!! 2001 here I come!

huh, only on slashdot...
closer to 32, since that's the usual ROM size on a pocketpc.
still, u gotta figure 32megs is pretty big for a OS that should be so incredibly simple, i mean PalmOS is like half a meg.
um... actually, members of the lower class (those most likely to inbreed) tend to be democrats.
who the hell is this guy? he's a freakin loon.
eh, they all look good in those glamour shots photos, i wanna see what she really looks like... apparently a flower covered hill?

sorry, had to do it, i love the soviet union jokes ;) besides my karma is getting a bit too high lately and needs some deflating...
OHHHHHH!!!!!! I'm sorry, did u say they said it was loud? Oh great well that clears up everything since they said it was "loud".
So if the next CPU/hard drive/video card review i read says "it's fast" is that good enough?
They should have measured the sound somehow. 5 years ago PC noise wasn't a major concern, but now days you'll never read a review of a CPU cooler that doesn't give you a pretty good description of how loud the system is.
my grade on the review: F
oh come on someone was gonna say "beowulf cluster" eventually, and i have "Karma: Excellent" so might as well be me getting flamed
hey guy's it's March 1st not April 1st think you posted this a little early....

oops ur right, ok i was just talking about the money taken straight from my paycheck, not the second taxing Americans get whenever they buy something... or hundreds of other taxings when you pay taxes on property and vehicles EVERY YEAR.
and you know this how, exactly?
Ok is he listing real USD, or is he doing some kind of comparison of what it would be if it compared to the average American salary?
If he's gonna use USD he needs to specify what the average korean makes in USD. According to about.com the average korean makes between 20,000,000 and 50,000,000 WON, which converts to about $20,000 to $50,000 USD (although xe.com has a more accurate conversion, but that's pretty close.
