  16. Re:FlyDrive would be a better name on Microsoft Will Have To Rename SkyDrive · · Score: 2

If you installed Windows XP on a computer with a build-in (USB) all-in-one card-reader, the Windows drive will default to H instead of C. (tip: unplug the card-reader before installing Windows XP.)
It's amazing how much software misbehaves when the C drive is an empty card-reader slot. For example exported Autocad profiles are hard-coded to drive letters, so you can't migrate your Autocad settings to/from computers that don't have the /windows/ directory on C.

You could actually work around the problem if Windows XP was trying to install to a drive letter other than "C". During install you would create the partition (it would be drive letter whatever), immediately delete the partition, and then recreate it. It would recreate as drive "C".

Search for the free program named "RName-It". You can rename multiple files, add/replace sections of multiple filenames, add sequential numbers to multiple filenames, etc. It's an awesome program.

  19. Install a PDF exporter as your default printer on Ask Slashdot: How To Go Paperless At Home? · · Score: 2

Install a PDF exporter/printer as your default printer on your PC/Mac/etc. For Windows I would recommend the free PDFCreator from http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/ .

I do a lot of online shopping and like to keep a copy of my purchase receipts. I print my receipts to PDFCreator, name the output file something descriptive (YYYY-MM-DD - Merchant + Item description.pdf) and save the PDFs to a receipts folder. It fulfills my needs, doesn't waste paper, and I can print a receipt copy if I ever have the need.

I have a Net10 pay-as-you-go LG el-cheapo flip phone that does something similar. Occasionally, it will lose sync with the cell network and no longer receive or send normal calls. The phone indicates "Emergency Use Only" if I try to make a call when this happens. The phone never actually locks up, though, and a power cycle fixes things. Kinda sucks, but I don't use the phone very much and it costs me $15/month to keep it (I buy Net10 300min/60day cards for $30). There is a visual indicator on this phone that lets me know when it has dropped signal. When things are working properly the word "Home" is displayed on the LCD, and it's not there when the phone has lost signal.

I bought a refurbished Linksys E3000 and two refurbished Linksys E2000 units from Amazon (currently $50 for the E2000 and $61 for the E3000), and have them loaded with dd-wrt. The E2000 and E3000 have gigabit Ethernet ports, the E3000 has simultaneous 2.4GHz/5GHz radios, the E2000 has selectable 2.4GHz/5GHz radios. I'm using the E3000 as my firewall/gateway and have the two E2000 units connected to it via WDS. The WDS links are over the 5GHz radios and I use the 2.4GHz radio in the E3000 for client PC connections. The setup works great, and was pretty inexpensive to implement.

I've read that the Costco unit includes a case, but I can't verify this.
