Yes, my original post was response to a flamebait AC about it being better then recompiling the kernel for updates.
I responded to flamebait with flamebait, at least I offered an example.
If there is a kernel flaw and we want to fix it in Linux, we can simply apply a quick and simple patch and recompile the kernel. With Windows, they hold onto these things until they have enough to offer a "Service Patch" (or the critical ones get put out as 'hot fixes'). The real main difference with an SP is that they wait until they have enough patches for everything and then roll them all out at once. Which is not a bad thing, but they usually end up being huge like SP2 and looks like 'too little too late' to many people. With Linux there are updates and patches everyday because nothing is centralized, it is completely distributed. There is no "one person" to look to for patches.
In some views this distribution is a bad thing because then you need to be looking all over the place to know what needs to be updated. MS does this by themselves and I'm sure that their people work VERY hard on the fixes and testing. I have nothing against MS workers and I know they work very hard.
But that doesn't mean the people that work on open source do not work hard also. The only real difference is that they have an open policy and allow others to look at and help fix the code. This is something that MS can not afford to do with their business model, which is not evil, just not as many people can contribute.
Why must people bash Linux when MS does something good? Probably the same reason people bash MS when Linux does something good. They are two totally different business models and have different ways of doing things that does not work well with the other groups.
I have high hopes that SP2 will make my Windows admin tasks easier (less spyware/malware), but still put the core of my work in UNIX/Linux systems. Use what you feel necessary to use, but don't flame people for their own decisions.
I admit, a 250MB "patch" is a lot easier to install then a 25KB patch, but if you're watching your bandwidth I feel the 2 second download and 15 minute compile time is a tad more efficient then a 2 hour download...
Sorry, there is no "Setup -> Next -> I Agree -> Next -> Next (wait 30 minutes) -> Next -> reboot" method in Linux, but that's what we get for knowing what we're doing in the first place
It's simple, if you want to play the latest Windows game like it should, keep a Windows partition handy.
Oh yes, that's SO SIMPLE! News flash: Not everyone has/runs Windows. It may come pre-installed with new machines but some people skipped the middle man and built their machines. Some people can't afford to pay for a copy of Windows (and refuse to pirate). And some people just don't want to run Windows at all
There is NOTHING wrong with running Windows games on Linux with an "application layer", it doesn't hurt your system and it DOESN'T hurt Linux. Some people are not Frame Per Second junkies and don't mind a few quirks, bonus if it works 100% Game companies will not decide to port to Linux because "It runs with WineX", that is an excuse (if they actually say this, I've never heard it). If companies want to port to Linux they WILL. We have Epic and id as very strong backers of cross platform games, and more are following.
Linux games will not be an over night 'killer app', but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy some things. Having Windows on a second hard drive or partition is not an option for everyone.
You sound like one of the 'creative individual's that put together a boycot WineX page that has no real proof or facts about why they are boycotting it other then to be a Linux Zealot
Why not a boycot MAME campaign or boycot ANY 'emulator' for that matter? Makes no sense, stop trying to rationalize your dislikes with FUD
Yeah, SA day! I get to work only 10 hours today, and my boss left already! Too bad I have too much work to do I can't screw off more then a quick post on Slashdot...
From a SA/DBA that got a 2% raise for being on call 24/7 and keeping the whole damn business operating, let's hear it for the employees that work overtime on a salary! Yeah for us suckers!! Coders, please join in!
If someone offered me $20 Million dollars to change my name I would in a heartbeat! Expecially if it was a dumb sounding name to begin with!
The only part of this deal that I don't like is turning over the domain name...just what does Lindows have to do with Windows? Of course, I guess that's what this whole case was about =)
Anyways how is loading your last save a "permanent consequence."
You lose all your progress since the last save. Ever play a game for 2 hours, not saving and then die and have to go back to that last save spot? It sucks, makes dieing in the game more troublesome then 'respawning'.
but when was the last time you compiled something like KDE or Gnome or even OpenOffice.org from source? About two days ago, installing Gentoo. (Note, I actually agree with you here...)
And OpenOffice is STILL compiling! emerge openoffice-bin it's a binary install, but doesn't take a week to compile. I just don't have 36 hours to give to installing a single app...
Imagine a Lemmings style game like that? You can pick up a Lemming, let it drop, and it does its own thing. Sounds simple enough, but when you have 30 of them on the screen, you have to move quick to pick them up and get them out of danger.
I've played that game, it's called Creatures. Not as elaborate as saving them from falling off a cliff, but more like Mad Scientist meets The Sims The Docking Station is cool as you can trade/breed your Creatures with others online
RPMs can be considered the "Install Shield" of Linux. Yes compiling from source is easy and can be better...but when was the last time you compiled something like KDE or Gnome or even OpenOffice.org from source?
Last time I compiled just the kde-base it took over 12 hours. When a RPM would do the trick in less then 5 minutes. Sure, you may lose some of your precious 'performance tweaks' but you didn't have to wait a day to use it!
BTW, I use Gentoo and love it so I'm not some corporate brainwashed RPM troll. But I can see the benifits of RPMs in a more 'commercial' environment.
"We have repeatedly offered to allow a neutral expert to compare the codes in the two programs and evaluate Affinity's claims, but Affinity has rejected that offer. We have investigated the claims... thoroughly and concluded that the allegations are without merit."
This is Orkut saying that HE offered a neutral party to look and Affinity (the one's sueing Google) have refused the offer.
The only one's trying to 'pull a SCO' here is Affinity...
Sounds like they are trying to prevent someone's account from expiring on them; then the customer bitching about it because their check bounced and the account wasn't renewed...makes since to me
I don't know if special effects are good enough to do that, after all the camera adds 10 pounds...how do they explain the other 100 pounds?

Ya, lead paint has an amazing ability to block most radio waves...just don't eat the paint-chips that flake off
It's not the falling that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end that kills you

probably just ignorant and doesn't have memories of the early 80s...kids these days!
Remember when MTV played Music Videos?

Did I say I enjoy replaying 2 hours over and over and over until I can finally get it right?
This is what I hate about Metroid Prime, not enough save spots!
emerge openoffice-bin

Funny? Yes
But FPS games are not being "replaced" by 'sneekers', but they are being complemented.
There is more then one way to make a game, and 'shooter' and 'sneeker' are only two of the ways to make one

Why do SmashTV over the UT2004 engine with an Aliens Skin?
Alien Swarm
BTW, it's an excellent TC for UT2004!
No, it still sucks and is useless no matter what platform it's for
It will suck even more if MS does it
CTRL + F7 = Decreases frameskip
CTRL + F8 = Increases Frameskip
CTRL + F11 = Slows down the game
CTRL + F12 = Speeds up the game
In single player games there is no problem...they are not harming anyone and usually these 'cheats' are placed in the game by the designer
Online game cheaters piss the hell out of everyone that are trying to play fair and have fun
You don't happen to pack snowballs with rocks, do you?
the Quake3 engine gave us Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast
The Unreal engine gave us Deus Ex and America's Army
We all know that even if Doom 3 sucks as a game, the engine will licensed and used in an even better game
