  3. Relevance to IT on New Overtime Rules Have Short Shelf Life · · Score: 1

Seriously, do any IT workers actually get paid overtime? I've never known any programmers, DBAs, or sysadmins to get overtime and, esecially back when business was good, weeks were much, much longer than 40 hours. We used to joke that our salaries were approaching below minimum wage when you factored in all the unpaid overtime we worked.

  4. Annoying! on Cellphones Usable on Airplanes in 2006? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Who cares if it's technically feasible or not, or causes interference - the real issue is, how annyoying is it going to be listening to your seat neighbor yakking on his phone for an entire flight while you want to read or sleep. Airplanes were the last refuge of those that don't want to be made available at all times, and don't want to listen to other people's business. Now, sadly, they are taking that away.

  5. Re:But so is MSN Music! on Microsoft Opens MSN Music Store · · Score: 1

Yeah, thanks. I just read an article in WSJ about it and it said the same thing. But, they also said that it still was a long way from being as good as iTunes. Guess I'll have to play with it and decide for myself.

  6. No stand alone client on Microsoft Opens MSN Music Store · · Score: 2, Insightful

I dont have an iPod or any other portable music player, so file compatiblity is really a non-issue for me. The reason I will stick with iTunes and eschew the MS site is simple - I like the fact that iTunes is a stand-alone client that has full GUI functionality and doesnt require a constant web connection. I can bring my laptop when I travel and even without an internet connection listen to music, create playlists, etc. Plus, the user interface is so much nicer than being "hobbled" by having to do everything within a web browser. Can Microsoft offer that?

  7. No Bluetooth! on Palmtop Nirvana? · · Score: 1

  8. Low Turnover == Poor Benefits on Tech Turnover Rate Lowest Since The 80's · · Score: 2, Informative

Our company was recently acquired, and I asked about a tuition reimbursement plan (like the prior company had). I was told that in the current market, with low turnover, there is no need to offer such a benefit in order to retain employees. I was not so much shocked by the reason as by the fact that they actually freely admitted this.

  12. Re:Some of the changes (possible spoilers) on Star Wars on DVD · · Score: 4, Interesting

OK, your mention of Jabba in ANH gives me a chance to rant a bit - he shouldn't be in that movie at all. Period. (In my mind, this is worse than the famous Han-shoots-first controversy). Having grown up watching the original movies, having Jabba be this unseen, mysterious figure added to the interest and suspense in the sequels. In ROTJ when he was finally revealed, that was a defining moment in the movies. Showing what he looks like up front in the "first" movie just ruins the ending! Of course, by now everyone on the planet with any remote interest at all knows what Jabba the Hut is and what he looks like, but in my mind his presence early on does nothing but hurt the story.

  13. Boarding Pass to get to gate on Your Right to Travel Anonymously: Not Dead Yet · · Score: 1

This is the one that really makes no sense to me. How does requiring a boarding pass to get through security, thus inconveniencing family members looking to pick up or see off loved ones, help improve security or reduce terrorism? If I were a terrorist, would I really be stopped by this? All I would need to do is buy a ticket! Bingo, instant access to the terminal. Same thing for the alarms raised when someone buys a one way ticket. Terrorists are not stupid - of course they will buy a round trip, even though they obviously don't plan to use it that way.

  16. Re:Long complicated passwords are LESS secure on Passwords - 64 Characters, Changed Daily? · · Score: 1

Not a bad idea (and, in fact, thats basically what I usually do) but the key is dealing with the "unwashed massses" who are likely to put the password itself on a post-it on their monitor if the rules are too stringent.

  17. Long complicated passwords are LESS secure on Passwords - 64 Characters, Changed Daily? · · Score: 1

When will folks realize this? I can easily remember a password that is meaningful to me, even if it may be a word in the dictionary. When passwords are required to have 8+ characters with at least one non-alphanumeric, and change every 30-90 days, I (like everyone else) has to resort to writing them down. As a consequence, it is a lot simpler for someone to find the password and break into the computer system. Sure, they can't be as easily "hacked", but I bet casual theft of passwords and data by employees and people in the building is a bigger problem than someone trying to break into our fairly dull servers from the outside.

Thanks for the response - certainly some good advice there! For me personally, the freelance stuff would be difficult to do because of the problems getting good, affordable health insurance as someone not tied to an employer. My last job was found through networking (met the hiring manager at happy hour - never underestimate the power of beer!) and I agree that is the best way by far to find a position.

  19. Re:The only perks I get... on Are Job Perks Coming into Vogue Again? · · Score: 1

Well, I have a notebook, but no free software and no training whatsoever. In fact, our tuition reimbursement plan was eliminated because the company feels that they no longer need it as a benefit to attract new workers, since there are so many people desparate for a job. By the same token, they know that no one will quit no matter how poorly they are treated because there are no new jobs to go to. So far their theory has proven correct - not one person has left the company volunatily for over two years, in spite of no salary increases, no bonuses, moving to cheaper (and crummier) offices, and a reduction in benefits.

Even the recruiters have given up - they have no jobs to offer.
