I had a Verizon cell phone, and eventually had to dump it. I lived in a Verizon "dead zone" where within about two block of my house (I live in a major city!) there was no Verizon service at all. Everyone else I know with a Verizon phone had the same problem in my neighborhood. Once I switched to AT&T, everything was fine. Guess that annoying "Can you hear me now " guy was too busy hanging out at the beach to stop by a place where people actually live.

Heh, that was one of my first programs too. I wrote it on a Radio Shack Color Computer in the store, and watched the hilarity ensue as the minimum wage clerks tried to figure out how to stop it.
I'm back to no ties, thank goodness, but a year ago I was working for a major financial services company that still required everyone, engineers included, to wear suits to the office every day. We could take off our jackets while at our desk, but had to put them on if we rode the elevator. Keep in mind that none of us ever saw a customer, let alone had to meet with one. Even the guys whose job it was to hook up PCs and crawl around installing cables had to wear suits! What a ridiculous place - I wonder if anyone there will see this article.
But will never work in practice. Servers don't come by not because they dont know if your glass is empty or full, but because they are busy with other customers. This won't solve that problem at all.
Plus, you think there is an IP shortage NOW - imagine a future where every glass has its own IP address! (I realize thats not the scheme they are proposing)
This is going to sound like flamebait, and I'm glad you cited a reference, but $65/hr??? That hardly seems realistic - I've seen $3.00/hr (Thats US dollars, mind you) offered for temp. programming assignments. They get around the minimum wage problem by considering it a contract. For FTEs, 20-30 k seems to be the norm for jobs that used to pay over 60k.
Companies can get away with it, so they will - even 30k/yr beats working at Starbucks for 6 bucks an hour.
My cousin was one of the original developers at MIT (My minor claim to fame). Do you remember the adversising campaign for Zork back in the day? They would basically poke fun at other games, saying that text adventures unlocked the power of the imagination, which was far better than any computer-generated graphics. How times have changed.
In the early days of the internet (pre-www) it was all about file and information sharing, primarily among academics and the government. All commercial activity was taboo. Now, its turning into the exact opposite - plenty of pop-up ads and spam advertising everything on earth, but sharing files (the whole point of an internet) is being banned.
Al Gore must be rolling over in his grave.
I wouldnt be annyoying if you register once, then forget about it. I registered years ago, so I never have to see the reg page again. Took about two minutes, and well worth the effort for a "free" subscription to the NY Times. Have you seen the application form for PC Week and similar magazines? THOSE are a pain; dozens of questions to fill out, including things like income and potentially confidential info about your company. If you are that concerned about your private info (as has already been stated) just use a fake name.
Not here (or any company that I know of currently). It's all about the bottom line in the corporate world, especially for items like computers which are viewed as office supplies. Desktops are still cheaper than laptops, so unless your job requires you to travel a substantial portion of the time, yer stuck with an inexpensive desktop. Same reason we don't have LCD monitors - the company doesn't want to spend the extra $$$ just because they look nice.
This is an urban legend - I Worked with a number of RR employees at Oxford University in 1987, and this story was circulating around even then. Makes for a good story tho!
You are right, album sales HAVE been affected by Napster et al. - they've gone UP thanks to the ability to preview music on the net for free. U less hurt by the economic downturn, people have so much discretionary income to spend, regardless of available technology. Maybe if they are in fact buying fewer CDs, they are going to the movies a couple of extra times a month.
This shouldnt have come as a surprise to your friend - surely he knew that we would be charged for his connect time. If not, well, there is no accounting for stupidity, no matter what the technology.
I agree. Back in college, we tried putting a spoonful of instant coffee in a cup of brewed coffee. The taste was horrible, but it did provide that extra caffeine kick! No-Doze crushed and mixed in with diet coke was also attempted, but the resulting chemical reaction caused the coke to fiz up all over the place.
Postage rate stability???? Are they kidding? How many times have our rates gone up over the past decade. Seems like the price of stamps goes up like clockwork every year or two. So much for the "efficiency" of the plus-4 system.
I disagree - 1:00 AM could be somewhat realistic, but having and email sent out at 3 or 4 am just screams "fake". Or maybe I'm just getting too old to stay up that late...
Ok, how many people immediately thought of the recent cheesy movie "The Core"? Don't they realize that doing this will cause massive superstorms and the destruction of the earth? I wonder if thats where this "Scientist" got his ideas from.
As I replied to the less-polite poster who also pointed that out to me - oops, my bad. Damn, there goes what little Karma I have!

You sure its not because of their national anthem (Oh Canada?). The article said it was team "O Canada" - maybe a play on words.

We turn to the Simpsons for guidance. Become a stonecutter, then you get your own private highway!

OK, I'll bite and disagree - wtf do you want bluetooth for? Does ANYONE actually use bluetooth?
They also just insulted everyone who lives in small towns. Madison is a great place (no, I don't live there, but if I did I'd be pissed!)
