The Europeans (or ESA) have long term plans to put people on the moon as well as on Mars. This programme is called Aurora, and was decided upon in 2002. The goals include, among others, a Mars rover (2007) and a Mars sample return (two launches, 2011 and 2014). The manned plans include a landing on the moon by 2024 and on Mars around 2030-ish. Before that manned lunar landing I have no real knowledge on what the European plans for manned space travel really are. But things are moving along, just not as fast as I would like!

People die in crashing cars, in sinking ships and crashing aeroplanes. It's unfortunate and tragic, but it does happen and it doesn't stop us from travelling by those means again. It does make us try to make it safer. Of course people will die in space. Do you honestly expect no accidents will happen? It must be as safe as possible, of course. But not so safe that we'll never fly (the safest way to do anything, is to not do it at all).

We're all going to die. If it happens while I'm exploring a crater on the Moon, or standing on Phobos while watching Mars below me, or flying through the rings of Saturn, or standing to close to a geyser on Triton, then at least it happens while I'm doing something so marvellous and beautiful as actually travelling through space, exploring its wonders. It beats the prospect of dying by the hands of a murderer, or in a natural disaster, or in a car accident on my way to my boring workplace, just because I wanted to stay on Earth because I thought it was safer than travelling through the Solar System. Safer, perhaps. More exciting? Hmmm.

I wonder why ESA's projects are often unknown to pretty much everyone. Is NASA better at informing the media on what they're up to? Or is it because so far, NASA has done the coolest things and that's why everyone only cares about NASA? Or is it ESA who doesn't understand the value of informing the public?

And what about Japan's adventures in space? Apparently they have a sample return mission en route to the asteroid Itokawa. It's highly interesting because it is a sample return and because it's using an ion engine, yet noone knows about it. Anyway, here's a link.

As for ownership, it's all in the definition of ownership. Ownership is nothing but an agreed-upon concept written and standardized in the law. If we decide that an artist owns his/her work, then that's how it is. If we decide that they do not own it and therefor can't sell it, then that's how it is. Of course, you could use weapons or other means to protect something that you yourself decide that you own, which would make you the de facto owner but not necessarily the de jure owner.

Natural selection? I mean, if they know there are alternatives and they know that Outlook and IE are unsecure even when patched (doesn't matter cause they wont patch, either), and even if they know that a firewall, antivirus and antispyware is necessary these days and still refuse to better themselves, all we can do is to try to be as safe as possible ourselves in order to protect ourselves from the spyware, viruses and worms that will be spread through their machines. And then one day perhaps they will realize that a clogged system, compromised personal data and sending spam from their computer is not a good thing.
