Honestly, it's just physics. If you have something spinning really fast and try to tilt it along the spin axis....it's not going to like it. The disc will warp rub up against something.
MS isn't to blame in the least. Warning the user is the ONLY thing they could do.
It's worth noting that the mouse and keyboard support in the PS3 UT3 version was AWFUL. Terrible mouse lag, only worked in certain types of games, very unconfigurable. It was pretty bad.
The biggest problem is that the console manufacturers don't see the need to push for it. If they saw how many gamers they'd win over by a standardized setup that was well done, they might think twice. I guarantee you that the number one reason stick-to-it PC gamers won't switch to consoles is the lack of a truly decent control system. The best console players with a controller would pale in comparison to a halfway decent m/k player.
If they are worried about a level playing field, they shouldn't be. People will switch to the better scheme when they realize it's better.
Heck, they could release official mice and n52 style gamepads and they'd sell like crazy.
Not to be a horn tooter here, but one of my favorite features about the iPhone is the ability to visually see who a voicemail is from, and the fact that you don't have to listen-to and navigate an audible menu.
I don't know of any phones at this time other than the iPhone that offer VVM, but I sure hope it takes off.
As a developer this is exactly something I've been faced with lately. If we want to launch a real beta of our web-based software, people are going to expect it to be pretty much perfect, in the way google has trained everyone to think. What do you call something so people know it's "incomplete and you WILL encounter bugs?"
There's a lot more to it than that. Each "tab" is an individual process. Each tab contains and controls its own popups and alerts. One tab has almost no relation to any other tab. If one tab crashes the "browser," in this case it will only crash the single tab that contains it. One tab running slow doesn't freeze up the whole browser. This is the way tabs SHOULD have been in the first place.
Just for anyone who hasn't tried iChat, I've used a LOT of video conferencing software and iChat's video conferencing is leaps and bounds ahead of anything else out there for the mainstream.
I have no idea what they do to preserve so much video quality on the trip, but it's astoundingly good. Comparing it to Skype or regular AIM (or MSN or what-have-you) chat is pretty laughable and anyone who's really compared will vouch for that.
No, "people" are not realizing any such thing. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of users don't really care who Apple, or MS, or WHOEVER sues. The vast majority of mac users have no idea what "Unix" is or that OSX is Unix...so why would they care if Apple is "friendly Unix?"
And Ubuntu or Fedora as "comfortable?" Not even close. Most Mac and Windows users would be absolutely clueless if you stuck them in front of any Linux box. The best OSS Unix/Linux is still miles behind the "average user" usability of the "big two."
People use Macs because they like them, and they like them better than Windows. That's precisely the reason I switched. I have no illusions about Apple as a company, but I like their products better than anything else out there that I can get my hands on.
If Apple keeps going down this road and ignoring the issues of security and "listening to their users wants," and if the next version of windows is actually GOOD, there will be a migration BACK. All it will take is one big "Blaster Virus" type attack to permanently spoil the "pretty" image that apple has built up. Their biggest problem is that they haven't yet figured out how close that possibility could be. OSX has a lousy patching-time record and that's another thing I've got no illusions about.
I personally love a world where I can pretty much use any platform I want and get the job done. Choice is good, and most apple users are in the same boat I am.
Another moronic publisher killing their market. People talk about the death of PC gaming. Well, this is it, and the companies killing it are too stupid to see it.
The problem comes when you're trying to match a real-world color with a color on the screen. A high quality matte screen wouldnt have a problem with black and wont give you false colors either.
I think the thing is, vendors have started using more and more glossy screens because they hide a multitude of sins. You can use a craptacular LCD and have glossy coating on it and it looks halfway decent.
Look at the latest iMacs as an example of this. Absolutely sub-par screen...and they coat it with glass so it hides how bad it is. It's something like a 400:1 contract ratio screen with many other vices.
Not picking on apple here (i love macs), but it's just cheaper for companies in general to gloss coat a screen and sell you a lousy LCD.
Obviously any serious graphic designers aren't going to stand for anything but a matte screen.
Or you could just buy some itunes giftcards which have song credits.

Hear hear! :)
digg generates more traffic than slashdot does. Digg is quite a bit more popular last time I checked.
I know...it sucks...but it's true.
I will say that the troll level here has gone down significantly since digg hit its stride.
I pay $20 mo for shared hosting at 1and1 and I've survived a digg onslaught before. It doesn't take a lot of money to get decent hosting.
Seriously, considering how often Ben Heck gets linked to on tech sites, I cant believe the guy hasn't upgraded to some decent hosting yet.
I'd really like to actually read this article.
Ah found the problem: "Lively requires Windows Vista or XP with Internet Explorer or Firefox."
Sounds like a recipe for fail to me.
More like neveralively. I haven't ever heard of this service before.

At least they're being upfront about it.

Hey, that's a dirty lie.
OSX*
And what year was this? My school had constant problems with their macs too...but it was in the mid-to-late 90's and OS8/9 just stunk.
OSC has also come a long way "overall" in terms of stability in the past three releases. I certainly wouldn't buy what apple was putting out in 2003.

http://www.mediatemple.net/labs/xv/ Yep.
Except for the lack of a monospace font...

haha sorry for the typo.

While I have no interest in the named services, it's not hard to see that all that is a pretty slick achievement. I like. :)
